Breakfast Topic: Exploring the World of Warcraft

So when I rolled my druid, the day before the expansion hit, I was determined to see as much as this beautifully crafted world as I could. Yes, I essentially had a death wish. I was exploring Outland with an honour guard of my guildies at level 10 (and hearthed in Shattrath), I ran through the Arathi Highlands at level thirty, swam through Un'Goro Crater in my forties and was pushing the boundaries of Shattrath by my fifties.
However along the way I found some amazing places: the crystal filled cave at Marshal's Refuge, the boughs where the Dragons of Nightmare can occasionally be found, the first time you run into Azuregos in Azshara, the Twin Colossals of Feralas -- well the eastern one at any rate. Then when I got my flying mount I really started exploring properly.Nagrand alone is full of nooks and crannies and I adore the beauty of Crystalsong Forest.
So come on, readers, I want to know if you've explored all the hidden places of Azeroth and Outland. Do you have any favourites? You do? Great, be sure to tell us about them in the comments box.

I went exploring and reached Booty Bay and found the best inn in Azeroth: The Salty Sailor and haven't moved since. *hic*

I love the water falls and islands floating in the air around the elemental plateau between Zangarmarsh and Nagrand. Stunning. Loved logging off there when I used to play the game. :)

I'm working on getting the Explorer achievements with my hunter and I couldn't agree more. As for favorite places, let's see...
Winterspring is beautiful and peaceful, despite how many things there are that try to kill you. I don't know what it is about the mix of purple sky and snow, but it really makes the zone unique.
I like Tanaris because it truly feels like this massive desert. The endless sands, the dried-out skeletons, the feeling that there's something amazing waiting just over the next dune... yeah, I've spent a lot of time there.
I haven't yet hit Northrend, but I absolutely love Outland, and Nagrand especially with my hunter. The huge, open fields with dozens upon dozens of beasts for the hunting? Ohhhh yeah. I did the Nesingwary quests there and have never done a better grind, just 'cause it well and truly made me feel like a hunter, the whole zone is just paradise if you've got that mindset.
And then I went to Netherstorm, which blew my mind. *grin*
Also: I feel your pain about aggroing everything within a three-zone radius. One of my best friends plays like that. There's a reason she just respecced to tankadin.

You didn't enter Northrend? Just wait to see Howling Fjord... There are no words.
Ohtarello Apr 17th 2009 11:29AM
Howling Fjord truly is stunning. They did so well with the design of that zone that Borean Tundra, the other starting zone feels painful to level in, despite having it's own charming areas.

My absolute favorite place to see in the game is the picture you've posted above!
I love the crystal cavern in Marshal's Refuge!

Same here... I first saw a picture of it about twenty levels before I could enter the zone, and when I finally got to see in myself, I can say that no picture does justice to in-person viewing.

I like the out-of -the-way and hidden places...
The homage to Conan in the Badlands...
Ravenholt...
The Engineering workshop north of Org... just to name a few.

The rat talking to 4 turtles in Dalaran's sewers cracked me up for a good 10 mins first time I saw them.

I don't know, the FIRST time I went to Un'goro was awesome

My favorite place I've been with my Paladin is the top of Mount Ironforge.
Some other good ones: The top of the little waterfall in Elwynn.
And as Alliance we used to take every guild member into the throne room of Undercity to pay our respects to the dead king.

"And as Alliance we used to take every guild member into the throne room of Undercity to pay our respects to the dead king."
Oh yes! Epic loregasms behind that one. Another is the monument to Grom Hellscream in Forest Song. Even as Alliance I can't help but stop and pay my respects every time I go there.
Taish Apr 17th 2009 9:46AM
That monument still sends a little shiver up my spine, I love it, probably one of my favourite places in game.
I adore Zangarmarsh and the Howling Fjord though, so much great stuff in both (Sporeggar is possibly the best in game faction too :P).

Before we got the spiffy boat, I used a little trick to make the trek through Menethil.
Die.
Walk to the boat.
Cross the ocean.
Talk to a Spirit Healer near town.
???
Profit!

Aw lame! :/
I always had so much fun doing that death run, it felt so epic x3

The seemingly endless exploration is what initially drew me to the game. I had wide expectations of exploring amazing places, but I think rolling Horde killed it for me.
Stupid Barrens.
Wyred Apr 17th 2009 8:35AM
Ahahahaha. Actually, too true to be funny. Personally I think this might be the reason for both the horde/alliance imbalance and all the belfs. Barrens sucks so much
Candina@WH Apr 17th 2009 10:19AM
To offer a different view point...
I loved the barrens. I got frustrated with the amount of funning back and forth (until I learned how to group my quests...)
But I am from the Dakotas in the US. Huge Empty grasslands make me homesick.
DrKillebrew Apr 17th 2009 10:35AM
The Barrens is my least favorite place, but despite that it still has some unique areas. Especially like climbing the mountains in that area.
There's usually something rewarding at the top. Like that Fallen Warrior monument, the warrior quest-giver, the cave-dwellers above Wailing Caverns, and loads of cantankerous tallstriders.
Mmm, tallstriders.
But evil quest-drops, mean porcupine-people, and Mankirk's farkin' wife kind of kill the mood.
