Wrath 101: Emalon the Storm Watcher

Unlike his meek neighbor Archavon, Emalon actually requires a bit of strategy and situational awareness. He also comes with four bodyguards, the Tempest Minions, who are integral to the fight. As can probably be inferred from his name and his crew, Emalon the Storm Watcher's primary source of damage is lightning, or Nature damage. It won't be necessary to stack resistance, just an understanding of the fight, his abilities, and knowing what to do and avoid. You can visit Emalon by turning into a corridor on the right just before heading into Archavon.
Emalon abilities
Chain Lightning - Sort of like a Bizarro version of the Shaman spell of the same name, the first target will take no damage while targets after the third jump can be one-shot. Think of a boss version of the Lightning Constructs in the Halls of Stone.
Lightning Nova - Emalon borrows another ability, this time from Loken in the Halls of Lightning. Emalon's version has a five-second cast time, which should be enough time for melee to run the hell away. It has a 20 yard range and should be relatively easy to evade.
Tempest Minion abilities
Overcharged - Emalon chooses one Tempest Minion to Overcharge, which heals that minion to full health. It's a buff that increases its damage dealt by 20% as well as enlarging it. This buff will stack periodically at about 2 second intervals and once it reaches 10 stacks, the Tempest Minion will overload and explode, dealing ridiculous damage in an extremely wide radius that will wipe the raid.
Lightning Nova - In Heroic version, Tempest Minions will also cast a version of Lightning Nova that's weaker than Emalon's but stronger than Loken's. They cast this every 20 seconds.
What to do
The general idea is to get some generous spacing amongst the raid to minimize Chain Lightning damage. Ranged DPS work really well for this fight because they can generally avoid Lightning Novas and switch to an Overcharged Tempest Minion without having to reposition themselves. Melee DPS will have to work a little harder as they keep DPSing Emalon, avoiding the novas, and moving to an Overcharged minion throughout the fight.
There are only two phases to this fight and there is no enrage timer. One tank is required for Emalon and another for the adds, of which there will constantly be four. Whenever a Tempest Minion is killed, Emalon will spawn another one at his location, which means the off-tank should be ready to taunt it to prevent it going after other raid members. Because the off-tank is constantly on the adds, she is generally the one able to spot the Overcharged Tempest Minion the earliest and should be the one to mark it. All DPS should switch (use an /assist macro if you need to) to the minion and kill it before it wipes the raid, which puts low-DPS raids at an extreme disadvantage.
It's essentially shuttling between these two phases and getting into the rhythm of things. If all players -- particularly melee DPS -- manage to stay alive every Lightning Nova cast, and the raid downs Tempest Minions in a timely fashion, Emalon should be a manageable fight.
The loot
Normal mode Emalon drops two pieces of loot and Emblems of Valor. He can drop the hands, legs, or chest pieces of Tier 8 (which drop in 10-man Ulduar) and Deadly Gladiator non-set pieces such as the cloak, boots, bracers, rings, and amulets. This gives Emalon a considerably more complex loot table than Archavon. In Heroic mode, he drops four items which can be the hands, legs, or chest pieces of Tier 8.5 (from 25-man Ulduar) or an assortment of Furious Gladiator items, and a pair of Emblems of Conquest. Emalon can drop legs and gloves from the Arena Season 6 sets, as well as any of the non-set pieces making the 25-man loot table even more expansive than the Normal mode. Fortunately, PvP non-set items are not class-specific, which should give players a better chance at winning something. Good luck and have fun storming the

He is very hard wiped for 4 hours on him earlier in the week

My guild got him down on our second round (possibly a BWL server first kill on Horde side), and also wrote the wowwiki guide to him (10 man version).

Warriors and druids tanking Emalon can trivialize his lightening nova if they time their charges correctly. DPS just has to be halfway awake to go from Emalon to adds, and then back.

The biggest key to this fight is having geared DPS that don't fail.
They have the biggest responsibilities, A) Staying alive. Nova (which happens in normal mode as well), and CL can one shot people. B) They must be able to kill the mobs in about 10 seconds. (It takes 3-5 seconds just to target the mob.)
When I did it, as a healer, both the tanks and the healers were undgeared compared to the DPS (read: tanks/healers in mostly 200 ilvl epics and some blues, dps full 213 ilvl). If you have 6 solid DPS (pref ranged) you will be solid.

Meant to add, 3kDPS is quality enough to down the adds intime. If you have 5 3kdps, and 1 2kdps you prolly wont get it.
Also, make sure you are blowing CDs on the adds.

I agree, Non Retarded DPS is essential and the only thing you really need for this fight.
I applaud blizzard for no longer giving us easy content that everyone can get. Once again you know you're good if your group downed something. Just 2 days ago I pugged it, with only 3 dps from my guild. Aside from stupid mistakes the first 2x. We absolutely wiped the floor with emalon and his adds (and i actually one a loot too!)
But regardless, just as ulduar is saying no to pugs. So is emalon. The game is supposed to have easy and hard elements, finally we've gotten some hard ones. It sickens me when I see retarded players (yes players with the inability to perform tasks like every other person) running around with equivalent gear as I, who dedicates much more time into my class, and the game.

What about players who realize that one != won. :)

The add tank can make or break this fight. Having amazing DPS means nothing if the add tank doesn't do his difficult job perfectly.
The add tank has the biggest role in this fight. They need to be able to tank 4 adds at once, keeping their threat up, whilst constantly tabbing through trying to see which one gets the buff and goes to full hp, mark it, and help dps it down. Then, he needs to taunt the new one and build aggro on that new add (all the while healer aggro is building quickly). Position himself to make sure all the adds are in front of him, but whilst doing so making sure he doesnt get too close to anyone else.
The whole cycle needs to be done about 4-5 times before Emalon goes down. It is extremely stressful and requires good multitasking from the add-tank.
The "main" tank, has a very simple job in comparison. Tanking Emalon and moving out of his nova is pretty much it.
Always try get your more skilled tank to take the adds, since that is the most difficult job in this fight.

Also for quicker switches to the adds for the melee, the adds can be tanked really close to the boss. Then have the add tank just moves out for the nova as well. The extra seconds of dps time got the add down faster at the 7-8 stack point.

That is a great graphic...

Yeah, It really says it all.

i'm actually glad this is not the weekly loot pinata, seeing level 80's with the valourous legs and green chest was always strange, it will probally be hard to pug, but an actual challenge for it is going to be much more fun
Nadril Apr 18th 2009 6:13PM
One thing a friend of mine found helpful is to have your DPS in the raid make a "/assist OffTank" macro. This way the Off tank can target the overcharged add and the DPS can all immediately target it as well, ensuring a faster switch.
I think this could probably be pugged (at least the 10 man version) with the right group. The 25 I'm sure in time could be but would need to probably have some geared players.

Our guild run found the chain lightning to be the biggest disadvantage in 25m. However we tanked him at stairs. Would prolly have helped if we tanked in middle, so DPS could spread all around. Also, used 2 offtanks.
We downed him on 10m, and the reduced risk of chain lightning helped considerably. I would say the biggest tip is, the overcharged add fills up on health. So turn on the nameplates, you can easily see which one it is, without even having to change target. Also, I'd recommend just marking all 4 from start, then calling out symbol of the overcharged. When a new one spawns, the offtank then marks him with the old mark. Not a problem at all, seeing as 75% of the time, the tank just needs to autoattack and maybe thunderclap/swipe/whatever.
LJ Apr 18th 2009 6:23PM
Our guild just did him for the first time tonight on 25 man, took about 3 tries to down him.
Tank the adds on the stairs, boss far away from him, get all ranged to spread, nuke down the overcharged add. It helped us to have a few melee on the adds. This was so they wouldnt have to run from the boss to the adds to start dps'ing, saving vital seconds. Also made it a little easier to identify the add to nuke, as it was always the one with full health due to the boss healing it to full before it starts its overcharge countdown.
Fun fight, GL with him.

It's really quite logical.
To kill Archavon, which is T7 content, you needed to be in heroic blues (or worse, if some of your raid was geared enough to drag your butt through while you took up a perfectly good raid spot).
To kil Emalon, which is T8 content, you need to be in T7 and T7 equivalent gear, with T7 equivalent stats and skill. This means a more coordinated raid, and should probably involve such things as Ventrilo for communication.
Emalon drops Ulduar-level gear. It's not quite Ulduar-level difficulty, but if you have any inkling that it's going to be as easy as Archavon, you're simply not thinking. That said, if you know what you're doing, have the gear to deserve T8 drops, and have a haf-coordinated team, Emalon is not hard.
AyaJulia Apr 18th 2009 6:26PM
...*half.
Sean Apr 18th 2009 6:32PM
So what level of gear does this encounter require? Before the disaster that is the 3.1 Bear Nerf, I could tank either 10 or 25 VoA with mostly Heroic and Emblem Gear.
Zelius Apr 19th 2009 10:27AM
This "nerf" is an overstatement. I was able to tank Emalon perfectly fine with a mixture of T7 and T7.5 gear.
You'll still be able to tank Archavon with heroic/emblem gear.
Chad Apr 18th 2009 6:36PM
He really should have been on a separate raid timer than Arch. Being able to PuG one for fun after winning a WG but having to have a very coordinated, geared group for the other seems a little counter intuitive.
Nathan Apr 18th 2009 7:08PM
You're right, Chad. They should be different instances. I'm worried that it will now be impossible to find a group to run Archavon anymore. Everyone going in is wanting to do The New Guy". So if for some reason you didn't gear up fully from Archavon and didn't get into Naxx that often, you're basically on the sidelines again. I'm glad there's new content, but to cram it into the same instance was just stupid.
