Wrath 101: Emalon the Storm Watcher

Unlike his meek neighbor Archavon, Emalon actually requires a bit of strategy and situational awareness. He also comes with four bodyguards, the Tempest Minions, who are integral to the fight. As can probably be inferred from his name and his crew, Emalon the Storm Watcher's primary source of damage is lightning, or Nature damage. It won't be necessary to stack resistance, just an understanding of the fight, his abilities, and knowing what to do and avoid. You can visit Emalon by turning into a corridor on the right just before heading into Archavon.
Emalon abilities
Chain Lightning - Sort of like a Bizarro version of the Shaman spell of the same name, the first target will take no damage while targets after the third jump can be one-shot. Think of a boss version of the Lightning Constructs in the Halls of Stone.
Lightning Nova - Emalon borrows another ability, this time from Loken in the Halls of Lightning. Emalon's version has a five-second cast time, which should be enough time for melee to run the hell away. It has a 20 yard range and should be relatively easy to evade.
Tempest Minion abilities
Overcharged - Emalon chooses one Tempest Minion to Overcharge, which heals that minion to full health. It's a buff that increases its damage dealt by 20% as well as enlarging it. This buff will stack periodically at about 2 second intervals and once it reaches 10 stacks, the Tempest Minion will overload and explode, dealing ridiculous damage in an extremely wide radius that will wipe the raid.
Lightning Nova - In Heroic version, Tempest Minions will also cast a version of Lightning Nova that's weaker than Emalon's but stronger than Loken's. They cast this every 20 seconds.
What to do
The general idea is to get some generous spacing amongst the raid to minimize Chain Lightning damage. Ranged DPS work really well for this fight because they can generally avoid Lightning Novas and switch to an Overcharged Tempest Minion without having to reposition themselves. Melee DPS will have to work a little harder as they keep DPSing Emalon, avoiding the novas, and moving to an Overcharged minion throughout the fight.
There are only two phases to this fight and there is no enrage timer. One tank is required for Emalon and another for the adds, of which there will constantly be four. Whenever a Tempest Minion is killed, Emalon will spawn another one at his location, which means the off-tank should be ready to taunt it to prevent it going after other raid members. Because the off-tank is constantly on the adds, she is generally the one able to spot the Overcharged Tempest Minion the earliest and should be the one to mark it. All DPS should switch (use an /assist macro if you need to) to the minion and kill it before it wipes the raid, which puts low-DPS raids at an extreme disadvantage.
It's essentially shuttling between these two phases and getting into the rhythm of things. If all players -- particularly melee DPS -- manage to stay alive every Lightning Nova cast, and the raid downs Tempest Minions in a timely fashion, Emalon should be a manageable fight.
The loot
Normal mode Emalon drops two pieces of loot and Emblems of Valor. He can drop the hands, legs, or chest pieces of Tier 8 (which drop in 10-man Ulduar) and Deadly Gladiator non-set pieces such as the cloak, boots, bracers, rings, and amulets. This gives Emalon a considerably more complex loot table than Archavon. In Heroic mode, he drops four items which can be the hands, legs, or chest pieces of Tier 8.5 (from 25-man Ulduar) or an assortment of Furious Gladiator items, and a pair of Emblems of Conquest. Emalon can drop legs and gloves from the Arena Season 6 sets, as well as any of the non-set pieces making the 25-man loot table even more expansive than the Normal mode. Fortunately, PvP non-set items are not class-specific, which should give players a better chance at winning something. Good luck and have fun storming the

Thank you whiners.
At least the old Voa was fun for everyone and a lottery ticket.
The situation as it now stands is ... you can't do PUG's with the new boss (unless you are extremely lucky).
No one wants to be saved either.
So expect a lot less people playing WG, a lot less people to find to do VOA.
And so a LOT less fun for the normal people playing the game.
Tx whiners, happely for us the Arena developpers just recognised they had to lower the ratings on PvP gear.
And btw folks: this comes from an 1800 arena rated player (hope to be Rival), so I am with the top 10% Arena players and NO idiot.
The rest can go brag and lie to destroy the game further.

as someone who ISN'T very well geared, i'm not a fan. as i see it, things will start to get to a point that you won't be able to get a VoA group unless able to kill emalon (and the eventual third boss when 3.2 hits... turn left at the intersection...). the problem isn't that emalon isn't easy enough, but that he shares the same lockout with archavon. separate lockouts would mean i'd be all for this. same lockout is just a bad idea.

I agree with thebitterfig and Bossy, this is just a bad idea...
I used to enjoy my weekly VoA-encounters for the 10-minute fun they were, and I loved to get some emblems and some loot-chances. But as I don't really play enough to be able to get a guild that will be doing Naxx or anything above it, it looks as if I'm gonna be stuck at heroic-lvl gear and the only raid I can pug will now be the Obsidian Sanctum...
Very very pug and casual unfriendly-decisions here Blizzard...

What idiot thought tying a T8 boss to the same raid timer as a T7 boss was a good plan?
I over-gear Archavon for tanking him, but I have nowhere near enough gear to even OT Emalon. Now I can't do either fight because I need to be able to tank the boss I can't get gear for.
So now I can stand around in WG watching people BEG for tanks for Vault knowing that they all want tanks for the new boss even though most of the pugs trying the new boss will fail and disband before trying the boss they can kill.

Blizzard really failed in this. Not in the difficulty of Emulon, but in putting him into the SAME INSTANCE AS ARCHAVON.
It will be harder for those people who know they can't get Emulon down to go to Archavon, because then everyone will get locked out if they only do the one boss.
"DPS LFG only 25 man Archavon"
Yeah, good luck with that.

Very disappointed that this is in the same instance. I tried it with my guild, got the mechanics down, learned to switch fast and dodge the AoE.... but still couldn't down him cause I wasn't geared enough.
And now I can't do the really fun old VoA, because everyone is doing "gear checks at the entrance".
Yuck.

As far as PUGing this guy, right now I'd not suggest it. Although give it a few weeks (or a month or two) and PUGing may be an option again. My guild wiped for about 4 hours combined over a couple days before downing him on 10 man. Like everyone is saying, the key is good dps. Also don't overstack the raid with melee. It'll take a melee stacked raid too long to run over to the overcharged elemental unless the melee happen to be exeptionally skilled.
wanda Apr 19th 2009 1:48PM
We tried this and failed, but the raid leader kept blaming DPS when the OT kept dying. er.. that's not our fault (he died before the guy exploded).
whateva!

I'm actually pretty happy they made Emalon this way and hope they don't nerf him.
First off, he's not a hard boss. It requires a little bit of gear and focus. If you know the fight mechanic, it's pretty much a given.
They made it so you have to EARN your gear rather than having a weekly run for quality gear. I hate rolling against PUGs who JUST hit 80 and can't even pull 1.5k dps against Archavon. It's not fair for the others in group to carry that player for gear. period.
Work on your gear, then focus on raids. Emalon obviously provides that message.

Tried this on my pally earlier this week. Mostly 10 man offset gear, had 2/5 10m t7 when I attempted. Bear in mind she can tank KT AND his bugs from 20%, not a huge achievement, but I've done this several times because one of our healers hadn't adapted to the way his healing had needed to change.
Anyway, we started out with the better geared tank, a DK, tanking Emalon, with me tanking the adds, the next 2 times, I tanked Emalon and the DK tanked the adds. All 3 attempts the add tank died before the Emalon tank. The adds hit for about 1200 PLUS 3400 nature damage every 2 sec or so. Emalon hit for a more mundane but no less devastating 10.5 k every 3 sec or so.
If this is how Blizz intends to scale the game, they're gonna lose a lot of subscribers methinks. Not saying it shouldn't be harder, but the increase in difficulty bears little to no relation to the increase in gear quality. It's like going and killing Ony solo and having her drop 50s and a grey.
vazhkatsi Apr 19th 2009 11:45PM
also has a 6 minute enrage, we hit it, its there.
RoPete33 Apr 20th 2009 10:55AM
I agree it should be a different encounter. Now when you try to do Arch everyone wants to do the new guy and you know a lot they're not geared for it. I was in a PUG that wiped 2 times on Arch cause they wouldn't pull him out of the clouds and they wanted to try the new boss too LOL. If I think the group might be good I might give it a go with em but if not I'm not gonna waste time and repair gold on Wipefest 3.1..
Aex Apr 20th 2009 1:10PM
This encounter isn't all that difficult on 10man
We did it on our 6th attempt. 4 failed tries on wed as it was our first look at the fight, Then 2 attempts on Friday, the first attempt we died to a enrage explosion.
Our group consisted of 3 healers, 2 tanks, and 5 dps. We would kill the adds at about 8-9 stacks each time. On our first 4 fails we had 2 tanks, 2 healers, and 6 dps, but positioning was more of a problem for those attempts.
Strategy:
Off tank should pull initial aggro and Main tank can taunt Emalon off. Pull Emalon to the bottom of the stairs on the north side, Pull the adds to the bottom of the stairs on the south side. The distance between the Main tank and the Off tank should be under 40y to make use of Paladin's Beacon. The Tank Healer(s) can stand at the top-middle of the stairs, Raid Healer(s) should be in the middle of the room, Ranged DPS should fan around the Raid Healer(s), Melee DPS should stand between the adds and Emalon. Be mindful of your position from Emalon (20y) and your Allies (10y).
The tank can eat the Novas, Melee DPS should move over to the add area during Nova. Chain Lightning is your worst enemy. Never have more than 2 people stacked together, in 10 man this shouldn't even be an issue. First hit does around 6k, Second does 12k, Third usually kills people. He always casts two Chain Lightnings between enrages. Nova USUALLY comes after the Second Chain Lightning, so the melee should move over to the adds and stay there until an Enrage comes. Otherwise, just be prepared to move on command. The Offtank should be able to find the enraged mob pretty fast, and you can /assist [name], or for the DPS near the trash mobs you can TAB through until you see the buff. You have about 20 seconds to kill it, 2ish seconds per stack. Occasionally, the adds shock someone for 5k, pretty easy to heal through.
Don't attempt unless your DPS has a majority of epics. You don't have to be super geared for 10 man, but you must be Raid geared. Try taking a healer that can Dual Spec dps, and try the first few attempts with 3 healers. Most competent DPS in Heroic/Naxx epics should be able to pull 2.5-3k dps easily. This will give your healers a better idea of what to expect. If your DPS can't cut it, have that healer switch to dps. If people are dying to Chain Lightnings, use Deadly Boss Mods and /range.
Aex Apr 20th 2009 1:19PM
I sort of scrambled my sentences in that last paragraph :p It should read:

lol,
"He's not hard we downed him the first day, as soon as wg became available.... we had basic knowledge and after 4 wiped due to silly mistakes/bads, we squared away our dps problem we 1 shotted him!"
Umm, pretty sure that if you wiped 4 times then got him its not er "We 1 shotted him!" its erm your 5th try..
Schiwing May 6th 2009 4:26PM
Heroic, 25 man, was a bit challenging when it was first released, although it was very doable with organized/well geared players. Recent nerfs have made this fight relatively as easy as Archavon. Grats on free epics again.
Normal, 10 man, was a joke at the start, and still is.
