Blood Pact: WTB Glyph of Haunt...anybody?

Greetings fellow Warlocks! Welcome, to our wicked weekly: Blood Pact! Here, heretical happenings are heard, diabolical deeds are done, and alliteration is always awesome. So continue to sit at your computer, continue to read your monitor, and enjoy the ramblings of Old Man Sentai as much as you're able.
I've dreaded the coming of 3.1 for awhile now. I love the new features of course. Being able to switch to a spec with replenishment any time my raid needs it will certainly be handy, and Ulduar will be a nice change of pace once I get in there -- even if I really wanted to get a few more Naxx achievements done before moving on. What I don't love is the new Affliction. There's so few buttons I feel like I'm playing Burning Crusade style Destruction. (Shadow Bolt, Shadow Bolt, Shadow Bolt, Shadow Bolt...)
3.0 Affliction's rotation went something akin to Shadow Bolt > Haunt > Corruption > Siphon Life > Curse of Agony > Unstable Affliction > Immolate > Shadow Bolt Spam, followed by dot refreshments as needed, and Drain Soul once the target was below 25%. There was some variation based on whether or not the group wanted Curse of Elements, or whether you liked your short duration dots to go up first, but on average that's how it was.
Now that Siphon Life has been removed as an active spell, as well as Unstable Affliction and Immolate being altered so that they're mutually exclusive on a given target, two dots are out of the rotation. I'm sure it's a welcome change for some, but I'll be referencing the period between 3.0 and 3.1 as the golden age of Affliction from now on. Oh well, such is WoW.
Losing a couple dots is hardly the only change. The glyphs for Siphon Life and Immolate were two of the best choices for Afflocks, so those need to be replaced as well. I mean...you could keep using Glyph of Siphon Life -- and I've met a frustrating amount of Warlocks in trade chat who are going to do just that -- but it's no longer a DPS increase, just a self-healing increase. And as much as I love to help out my healers, I draw the line at gimping myself across the board.
In recompense for making two of Affliction's glyphs useless though, Blizz has deigned to insert a couple of replacements into the game: the fantabularastic glyphs of Haunt, and Life Tap. Bad news is, these inscriptions are terribly hard for our inscriptor buddies to get their hands on. Glyph of Haunt appeared on my server rather quickly, just a day or two after 3.1 went live. Glyph of Life Tap, on the other hand, was only discovered early this weekend. Considering the rather extreme monopoly that was in play (only one inscriptor on the server had Glyph of Life Tap when I bought it) and the obviously very high demand, I'm pretty happy I only had to spend 300 gold getting my new Glyphs. Hopefully the prices will drop a bit before I start my post-3.1 spec experiments.
Since getting my new build in order, I've been able to sign on as a DPS for several heroics, and even a quick Naxx-10 pug. Now, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not very good at adapting to change -- particularly subtle change. A lot of facets to playing an Affliction Warlock don't even cognitively register for me anymore. I stopped thinking about which buttons need to be pressed in which order a long time ago. It's just muscle memory now. Because of that, the new rotation has left me floundering a bit. I can't tell you how many times in the last week I've hit the '6' key, expecting to cast Shadow Bolt, and instead accidentally casting Searing Pain. It's bad enough that I've actually got nothing keybound to '6' right now.
The new rotation, as I figure it, goes roughly thus:
1) Open every combat with Life Tap, and make sure to Life Tap every 20 seconds after that, to get the glyph buff. (for me, it was roughly 80-90 spell power I think.)
2) Shadow Bolt. This is actually quite important now. In the past opening with a Shadow bolt was about as important as using the appropriate dinner fork. Now though, getting Shadow Mastery up on the target and keeping it up is paramount.
3) Haunt. Refresh whenever the cooldown is up.
4) Corruption. No need to refresh, Haunt takes care of that.
5) Curse of Agony. Refresh as needed.
6) Unstable Affliction. Refresh as needed. I find it best to begin casting when the previous cast has about 1.3 seconds remaining.
7) Shadow Bolt spam. (Or, if below 25%, Drain Soul.)
That's what I worked out, and the internet pretty much confirms it. Essentially it's just the old rotation, without the spells that no longer work, and with the extra step of casting Life Tap every 20 seconds.
One thing which surprised me, as I was poking around the internet looking to see if anybody had stumbled upon some insight I had missed, is that there seemed to be some contention about pet use. Obviously the Doomguard provides the best DPS, but we can only use that bad boy for 15 minutes out of every 30, max. Personally, I continue to use the felhunter for his Fel Intelligence buff, but I've also heard a few people talking about using the imp, or even the succubus as DPS minions, and a lot of people are advocating the placement of points into Demonic Power. This is something I must investigate further in the near future.
I'll admit, the new Affliction isn't mind numbingly simple. Remembering to hit Life Tap every 20 seconds is proving to be a bit of a struggle for me, and that's nice. Though I do worry that I'm going to become a parriah among my healing friends if I'm not careful. There are other nice little improvements as well. With the damage increase Corruption got, in conjunction with the healing properties of Siphon Life, it's a powerhouse of an instant-cast spell. I was able to run a level 45 Mage through dead-side Strat in about as much time as mount runs used to take me. The way I was pulling abominations at the end, I thought I might have accidentally logged into a Paladin.
Small things like running low level instances aren't what we spec for though, and while I hate to say it, I'm really struggling to keep my DPS at a reasonable level. I knew my DPS would be quite a bit lower after the patch went live of course, and I was fine with that. But there are bosses where I can't think of a single thing I did wrong, yet barely managed to top 2.3 DPS. A buddy of mine got his Death Knight to 80 over the weekend, and even he was a challenging opponent on the DPS meter. Granted, he's a very skilled player and it's still a pretty powerful class...but it still made me feel rather impotent.
Part of my problem, I'm sure, is just aclimating to the various Warlock changes. I often forget to Life Tap in the midst of my rotation, and until I get a bit more used to things my hands are bound to be slow. I did manage to top 3.2k on Ingvar the Plunderer earlier today, so I'll give Affliction some more time before I start looking elsewhere for my primary spec. But like I mentioned earlier, it would be nice to be able to provide replenishment for my raid group with a nice deep Destruction build. Or maybe I'll even give in to the flavor of the month and start raiding with Fel / Emberstorm.
Whatever I decide to spec in the end, so long as I'm still a Warlock, I'm content. And I've been playing this game long enough to know that the best DPS spec today could just as easily be so worthless within a year that its defining talents could be completely removed from the game.

WTB Glyph of Life Tap... that isn't 500g :(
AD EU can be a money sink sometimes...

A tip regarding Glyph of Life Tap:
I read over at one of the forums that the glyph's power can be activated by casting Life Tap Rank 1, which is what a lot of people have been doing as an "opener" or whenever they didn't want to lose the health. Rank 1 takes hardly anything away at all, but still provides activation of the glyph.

Ouch. 250g on my server.

Glyph of LT was going for about 90g on my server, and I felt fortunate. Haunt's still hovering around 350g. I'm hoping it falls before I go to a real raid this week...

I managed to get the Glyph of haunt for 80g of this AH this afternoon, sadly no sight or sound of the glyph of life tap as of yet

wonderful post. I have created my own spec 21/50/0 just so I could have Siphon Life effect on my corruption, and it has worked wonders. I can DPS and heal my Felguard and self the entire time. Life Tap glyph shows dramatic changes between having it up and not. I must say that I am enjoying 3.1 greatly, going back and soloing BC 5-mans, and doing all of the BC group quests that murdered me before.

WTB Glyph of Metamorphosis.
Actually I got mine, but it took days to find one.

As a fellow diehard Afflock, I feel your pain. It just doesn't feel the same.
I've been playing with other specs for the past week (0/41/30 and variations) for a while now, waiting for the price on the new Affliction glyphs to come down. They're entertaining at least, but I miss the old feeling like I was juggling three balls with one hand. 3.0 - 3.1 Affliction really was its golden age.
Ah well.
I can say that my jaw HIT THE FLOOR when I saw 4k Corruption tick crits followed by 8k SB crits. (I'm still in pre-Naxx gear, so my DPS isn't mindblowing.)

I've always been a huge fan of Affliction. When I first heard about the pulling of Siphon Life I was *really* skeptical. However, I have fell in love with the new Affliction. My gawd, why couldn't it be this simple. Now I don't have to enhance carpal tunnel to succeed at Affliction. I use an unsophisticated 3-button mouse and a QWERTY-US keyboard. No special functions, no macro memories, and no keystroke memory. Old-fashioned mouse-click and homemade macros in-game is my limit. So, I welcome the few changes in rotation, as it leaves more room for error or rotation-change in different situations. I know longer have to waste time casting an Immolate, as I now have Unstable Affliction. At first, I was like "What?? No Immolate?! What the heck is going on here??". But, after I took a stroll to the Combat Dummy Area in Stormwind, I cracked my knuckles, let out a long sigh, and began testing my new rotation. After seeing those CRITS from those DoTs, I never looked back. Good riddance to the *old* Affliction. I for one am very happy to be using it, and look to continue using it for some time.
Sometimes a change *is* for the better. This seems to be one of those times.

Sadly i too mourn the loss of the golden age of affliction.
As in the article i too flounder at the end of the rotation, hunting for old buttons i used to press, almost instinctively. I understand affliction was tough for many but once you learnt it it was seared into your mind. It's a tough one to budge. :(
I also have empty spaces on my hotbar for now. :(
That said though i've acclimatized to the changes nicely and still appear to be kicking out nice DPS.
I've always used affliction for doing old dungeon runs though. Drain life tanking and instant dots were all you needed :)

Try the 0/40/31. It's fun seeing enemies faces get melted off (but pack lots of food)
Alexander Krizak Apr 20th 2009 2:30PM
Well, you won't actually have to worry about buying Glyph of Life Tap again; every single Warlock spec uses it in 3.1. It's just that good.
As for the new Affliction, well, I like that I can actually play Affliction again. I didn't mind the complexity of the old one so much as I minded watching so many timers. The new Affliction is still fairly complex compared to the Meta/Ruin build I usually play (though even that has gotten more complex with the Soul Fire weaving under 35%), but I find I can actually pay a modicum of attention to the boss rather that focusing on ten timers and then wondering, "Wait, how am I dead? Oh, whoops, I was standing in fire."

I too play affliction and had a few problems with my button rotation too.
This is what I ultimately came up with:
Shadowbolt - Haunt - CoA - Corr - UA - Shadowflame
It keeps me just one button short of my original raid rotation, but is the same amount of numbers for my soloing rotation.
LT hasn't shown up on my server yet, but haunt is still in the 300-400g range, which is just a bit too much for my broke pockets.
I will definately be looking into those when I can afford them/they come down in price.
Drago Dracini Apr 20th 2009 2:34PM
;p i got glyph of haunt and glyph of life tap for under 300g total. ;p I am winzor.

I agree, 3.0-3.1 for Afflic locks was splendid. Since the patch I've been 40/31 more often than not (dailies, random quests, XT), and while I do enjoy seeing 28k Incinerate crits on XT-002 Deconstructor, my surrounding Afflic locks are still blowing up the dmg meters.
Until I get Ulduar upgrades that provide both +crit and +haste, I'll stick with my SB-spamming Afflic spec...
*sigh* my bars looks empty with two spells out of the rotation.
chackey Apr 20th 2009 2:37PM
Seriously, they are killing warlocks.
Cool Story Bro Apr 20th 2009 2:37PM
Affliction is still amazing dps and unlike Naxx, Ulduar is actually somewhat difficult in terms of AoE damage done to the raid. Being affliction and having my Haunt and Corruption healing me while using my LT rotation has really been a life-saver.
The math has already been done that shows that the succubus is the highest dpsing pet especially now that priests have spirit as a baseline talent. There's no need to investigate.
If you're having issues with remembering to LT I would suggest using Ghost Pulse. Easy to configure so it flashes the icon when your buff wears off.

Managed to get the Life Tap glyph for 199g99s99c... still looking for Haunt.
Spec? 53/1/17 - Suppression, Amplify Curse instead of Dark Pact, 1 point in Fel Synergy (50% chance to heal pet for 50% damage works out better than 100%/30% when you're dot-based, I guess), and the standard 15 in Destro plus the Succubus improvement talent.
In HC gear plus t7.10 pants - hitcapped but only 1900 sp with Life Tap up - I hit 2550dps on the boss-level target dummy in Org, and then went to OS10 and got just over 2600 on Sartharion with no drakes up.
Succubus with the reduced cooldown on lash of pain did 11% of my dps, so about 300? Feels like better than the Felpuppy, anyway.

This is the spec I went with as well. I started out with a variation of my long time spec, but after reviewing various posts, this one made the most sense for me.
I've been Affliction since day 1 (for almost 3 yrs now). It's hard giving up old friends like Dark Pact, but with the 4pc t7 bonus and new Life Tap glyph, that ability just wasn't getting used much any more. And I finally accepted the logic that it's more important to focus on talents that directly affect dps.
The only drawback to the spec is there are no points in talents that reduce aggro. This can be a problem in pugs (with undergeared tanks) but shouldn't be a problem in raids with your well geared guildies.
It's actually fun returning to the succubus as my pet, but I still question her survivability. She ate it when I fought Sarth this week. But for questing, dailies, etc, she (and the spec in general) rocks!
Now that I glance at talentchic.com again, i see 53/0/18 is more popular, but I think the point in Fel Synergy is more important than the point in Cataclysm. A live pet = more dps And we're locks!! When do we ever have mana issues. I'd rather have my succy alive and whippin than 4% less mana used on my SB spam.
Lastly, while I've been tempted to try out fel/emberstorm ever since it was discussed here, I just haven't gotten around to it. Plus it was written pre-3.1 so I'm hoping the author revisits the spec sometime soon to touch on the changes (or maybe I can not be so lazy and do some research). Also, I'm looking forward to finding a pvp spec as that is what I'd really like to use as my 2nd spec. Any suggestions are welcome!
Oh.. regarding the new glyphs... I think I got both by the 2nd day for around 210g total. I've since learned Life Tap myself, and it is by far my best seller (out of 9 new glyphs) at 80-90g (depending on where the undercut is on any given day). And while this may be a comment for Insider Trading, it really is crappy for everybody out there! I bought those 9 books for between 1-1.6k each. And charging 80-200g for each glyph, I"m about at the break-even point. I still have the market on one glyph (luckily, but it's a slow sell even at 200), but I have yet to sell a single Deep Freeze. Most scribes are having (or choosing) to pay through the nose for the Books of Glyph Mastery, but I already feel that the market is saturated to the point where it's not worth spending 1k a book when you're only going to learn a glyph others already know (and are selling) or worse, another crap glyph (like Deep Freeze).

The worst part of the new Affliction is trying to convince the Destro Lock that it's better for him to be on CoE duty now.
