Trying out the new Wintergrasp
The new Wintergrasp, I am here to tell you, is a lot like the old Wintergrasp. Which isn't a bad thing -- though Blizzard has made a few significant tweaks to the game's big non-instanced battleground, it's still the same match it's been (and a good match it is, if you ask me). The main difference is that all of the workshops outside the keep are now up for grabs, so the defending team can now not only take out the southern towers to knock some time off the clock, but also lock down the workshops to create a vehicle shutout. That's tough to do, in my experience, though -- even if you grab the two lower workshops, it leaves the top two open for attack, and odds are that the lower two workshops will really only be taken if all of the towers are down and the vehicle drives down south need something to do.So the gameplay hasn't been changed that much, but it is nice that the requirements for the daily quest have been lowered -- we now only need 10 kills of the other side, and there are more NPCs around to count for those kills, so I actually finished both the kill and vehicle quests without even trying. It would be nice for Blizzard to somehow streamline the raid invite/share quests process that happens everytime WG begins, but they're leery of that, given how honor farming was such a problem in the auto-invite AV. And I have one personal request: Blizzard, can you please have me auto-dismount when I try to pick up an RP-GG? I'm fine with not mounting while I have one, but every single time I try to pick one up I get that error message, when all you need to do is auto-dismount me like any other object I use while mounted.
The biggest WG change isn't even in the battleground, it turns out -- most of the players I've talked to are just thrilled that you can now fly over Wintergrasp on the way from Dalaran to Sholazar Basin (and it figured 3.1 would drop a week after I finished the Oracle rep grind). I've even heard you can get credit for winning the BG if you're in the air when your side wins. Though a fix for that will probably have to come during the next round of WG improvements, whenever that will be.

Wait... Wintergrasp is no longer a no fly zone? Did not catch that gem in the patch notes.

I had heard about this change too, but I didn't catch it in the patch notes. I attempted it anyway and got the warning message, even after flying all the way to the "ceiling". What's up?

It's still a no fly zone, but you can use the Dalaran FP to either fly into your faction's camp in WG or fly directly into Sholazar Basin.

Another good change is you can now fly to WG through the Flight Master. This helps when the portal is supposed to be up when your faction controls WG. I thought this portal issue would be fixed in 3.1

I love WG, and the changes are great. However, I am on one of those servers where the Horde is badly outnumbered in population. The Horde only wins once the Alliance has been tucked in for the night.
I do wish Tenacity worked to balance WG fights.

Wait, you even lose on offense? The Horde of Gnomeregan are hard to match for their scarcity, but even we manage to succeed 100% of the time on offense (and 0% of the time on defense).

I'm not frequently a frequenter of winter's grasp, but almost every time I have attended, the victory has gone to the attackers.
jfofla Apr 20th 2009 8:59PM
Yes we lose on offense. We get a good Horde turnout, usually two full raids, but the Allies come pouring out of the stronghold like ants from a kicked over hill.
I would say we win on offense 25% of the time, mostly after 1am

We have the same problem on Argent Dawn [EU]. Most battles that aren't in the middle of the night are tenacity 5+ for Horde and that just doesn't cut it. It's death of a thousand stuns. Plus being able to take over all the workshops spreads us even thinner across the map - it's really tricky to get a win.
If a Tenacity rating of over 5 made you immune to all stun, snare, silence type effects - then we'd have a fairer fight on our hands.
I do really enjoy Wintergrasp when the player numbers are fairly even - great fun.

On Bronzebeard-EU its worse, we normally have between 17-20 tenacity and lose about 90% of the time.
WG is only there now for farming honour (which buys worthless rewards) and marks, although you need to log in in the early hours of the morning several times to get to the vendor to buy anything. Frustrating and annoying.

L2AoE - those little vehicles do a ton of AoE damage. Use them, love them. 2-3 of those with tenacity can kill anything.

I'm sorry but WG is still a joke... It's 5-15 mins of laggy battle that isn't exciting (IMO). Blizz fails at pvp encounters as far as I'm concerned. :D

Are you kidding me? RP-GG that's just pathetic and goes against all lore. This isn't modern warfare it's World of Warcraft...

Rocket Propelled Goblin Grenade!!!!!

Made by the Goblins, who like big things that explode AND are part of lore.
They have made identical things in the past. http://www.wowhead.com/?item=23836 ringing any bells?

You are so right, next we will see motorized vehicles.
Can you imagine a Motorcycle or a Helicopter?
This could easily get out of control.

@jfofla
Seriously, then what? Squid-goat aliens with energy swords?! I call shenanigans when that crap starts happening!
Dixonij Apr 21st 2009 9:07AM
I see what you did there.
brucimus Apr 21st 2009 10:43AM
has anyone use a RPGG recently? They have been buffed bigtime. You can now hit tanks for around 25K wich is almost enough to 2 shot them

Hi, I'd like to introduce you to the concept of "steampunk", which has existed in the Warcraft universe since the original game.
