Trying out the new Wintergrasp
The new Wintergrasp, I am here to tell you, is a lot like the old Wintergrasp. Which isn't a bad thing -- though Blizzard has made a few significant tweaks to the game's big non-instanced battleground, it's still the same match it's been (and a good match it is, if you ask me). The main difference is that all of the workshops outside the keep are now up for grabs, so the defending team can now not only take out the southern towers to knock some time off the clock, but also lock down the workshops to create a vehicle shutout. That's tough to do, in my experience, though -- even if you grab the two lower workshops, it leaves the top two open for attack, and odds are that the lower two workshops will really only be taken if all of the towers are down and the vehicle drives down south need something to do.So the gameplay hasn't been changed that much, but it is nice that the requirements for the daily quest have been lowered -- we now only need 10 kills of the other side, and there are more NPCs around to count for those kills, so I actually finished both the kill and vehicle quests without even trying. It would be nice for Blizzard to somehow streamline the raid invite/share quests process that happens everytime WG begins, but they're leery of that, given how honor farming was such a problem in the auto-invite AV. And I have one personal request: Blizzard, can you please have me auto-dismount when I try to pick up an RP-GG? I'm fine with not mounting while I have one, but every single time I try to pick one up I get that error message, when all you need to do is auto-dismount me like any other object I use while mounted.
The biggest WG change isn't even in the battleground, it turns out -- most of the players I've talked to are just thrilled that you can now fly over Wintergrasp on the way from Dalaran to Sholazar Basin (and it figured 3.1 would drop a week after I finished the Oracle rep grind). I've even heard you can get credit for winning the BG if you're in the air when your side wins. Though a fix for that will probably have to come during the next round of WG improvements, whenever that will be.

I'll mention it here again as I've not seen mention of it anywhere else - the wintergrasp quatermaster has a ton of new pvp epics for sale for WG marks - got my druid a rather lovely titan-forged leather breastplate to match the helmet.
And there's some nice epic trinkets there as well :)

On my server this has drastically changed wintergrasp. The horde's strategy was always to swarm the towers anyway, and now they capture both south workshops too. The Alliance has barely won at all since the patch because the Horde has managed to defend successfully time after time. The only game of Wintergrasp I have won after the patch has been a defense game. If you ask me, defending has become easier than attacking. Much easier.

I've only been in WG a couple of times since the patch dropped. Both times (Aerie Peak, US) the Horde has had 10-16 Tenacity. There is simply no buff in the world that will overcome those kinds of numbers.

I think the changes have been mostly positive, however on my heavily populated server the main opponent is still lag.

Lag is also an issue on Blade's Edge. In the last battle, lag was so bad the Horde was able to drive right up to the main gates. All the Alliance could do was watch, lag was so severe.
I'm also excited about the Tenacity increase, it should help poor outnumber hordlings :)

"but it is nice that the requirements for the daily quest have been lowered [...], so I actually finished both the kill and vehicle quests without even trying"

One bug they haven't fixed is a bit of an exploit the Horde uses. They have one guy (sometimes a real low level toon) get Lt. rank by riding around on a vehicle. Then he logs out at the west shop before the battle is over. Once the next battle has started, he logs on and still has the rank to make all vehicles. They attack us w 6 to 12 engine in the first two minutes.
We are used to this now and smile on their feeble attempts to gain control. Although now with Tenacity being buffed more, we may not be smiling about this for long.

Both sides on my server make the towers and workshops a priority, so "odds are" that the changes have affected the zone.

Does the new wintergrasp no longer cause lag in raids? That would be a really good change.

Well, I have never entered the Wintergrasp battle, but the first time I took the Dalaran-to-River's Heart FP I was credited with a Wintergraps win.
I have had to fish there twice for the fishing daily. Once it was during the battle, so it felt like the old AFK fishing in AV. Blizz never seems to learn some things...

I belive another, undocumented change, was the guns in the fortress are no longer have 360 degrees field of fire. This was usefull to hop on the inner guns and shoot through the gun access arch to blast the inner courtyard. It also allowed you to turn the gun around and blast someone that had infiltrated and and was melee attacking the gun.
Too bad Blizzard is taking away all our dirty tricks.

When you are in the fortress itself, look around on the floor. There is a "journal" there which tells you how many times the horde and alliance have succeeded on attack and defense. I assume it actually updates correctly, but I'm not sure. I only noticed it yesterday.

Did anyone else notice the book just outside the instance entrance to VoA? It contains a record of wins/losses. I am just curious if anyone noticed that the ratio seems lopsided.
I know on [US] Khadgar, the ratio seems extremely skewed in favor of the Alliance. Which I can understand a little bit, because there always seem to be many more Alliance players than Horde in WG, but the difference of wins to losses is severe (if the book is accurate).
Just curious, what kind of win/loss ratio are you seeing on your servers?

The changes change the balance of Wintergrasp big time, in favour of the side with the most players. It reduces the suspect benefits of tenacity, allowing the reduction of the number of vehicles to paltry levels. Attempting to play in the face of these changes is laughable, as horde we previously won 4-5 out of 10 matches, now we're winning 1-2 max.
I used to really enjoy Wintergrasp, now I'm giving up on it.
