Argent Tournament is for the casual player

The original poster complained that there was no epic item for Restoration Shamans. Other players chimed in with how iLevel 200 items this deep into the expansion made no sense. On the other hand, the weapons are flat out awesome-looking, and fairly easy to get at a casual, if somewhat glacial, pace. Blizzard insists that the content is designed for the "fun and flavor" and in that sense the Argent Tournament probably works. Still, gear is a compelling reason to play -- something Blizzard has acknowledged on numerous occasions -- and this is why the Argent Tournament rewards are less than appealing. Particularly in a World of Warcraft where even casual players can PUG 25-man raids for a shot at iLevel 213 gear or higher. In the new, more accessible raid design philosophy, even casual players can experience the so-called endgame. That's the true success (or some may argue, the failure) of Wrath.
This brings us back to the question about the Argent Tournament. Who was it designed for? The even-more-casual player? I mean, the Argent Tournament dailies take about as much time as a couple of one-boss raids like Malygos or Archavon. At this point, the event quests and items are just about perfect for players questing towards Level 80, but beyond that it seems counter to the whole new raiding philosophy aimed at letting players experience the dungeons that Blizzard has worked so hard on. As hard as Ulduar is touted to be, even Blizzard predicts that it will be PUGgable at some point. What sense is there in the Argent Tournament then?
On the other hand, some of the coolest things from the tournament aren't epic gear but flavor items such as tabards, banners, and city-themed pets. It will be tedious to get, but they're there for those industrious (or casual) enough to grind for them. In the end, Blizzard stands by its direction for the Argent Tournament, with Nethaera's somewhat cheeky but appropriate "If it's not something of interest to you, then it's not something of interest to you," ending the argument. Of course, that neglects the possibility that maybe even non-casual players want to participate in this event. It should be noted that we're only seeing the first phase of the tournament, and the coliseum hasn't been constructed yet. Who knows what Blizzard might have up its sleeves then?

Cue the complaining....now.
Kadamon Apr 21st 2009 3:06PM
I'm an anti-complainer in this aspect. I agree completely with what the AT is.
Of course I'm an unabashed alt-whore.
This makes the game more fun for me since I can't stand guild raiding when things get all tense and people get butt-hurt over some people speccing different
Firiel Apr 21st 2009 3:06PM
No complaints, just... underwhelming.
Todd Apr 21st 2009 3:30PM
A fun and casual experience that can net you mounts, pets, and rep... and people complain? I must be missing something.
Cyanea Apr 21st 2009 3:37PM
The OMG HARDCORE raiders feel threatened when it becomes easier to get epics.
UGH Apr 21st 2009 3:54PM
I hate these articles so much for the fact that people like Cyanea have to come in and turn it into casuals v. hardcore volume 32445608. Just let it go Cyanea, it sucks that the T3 raider owned you in AV 10,000 times back in classic, but times have changed...just let it go.
For the record, I raid (pretty often) and I love the Argent Tournament. So saying "AT is only for casuals lololo" is just perpetuating this stupid war and is the main reason I really dislike wowinsider. But whatever, keep posting troll bait and i'll keep reading other blogs. Don't even know why i bothered reading this crap in the first place tbh.

I don't think I'm a casual player, but I know I'm def. not a hardcore, yell at people for not playing the way I think they should, type of player.
Everyone who is paying the 15 dollars a month deserves to have fun and be able to earn the same rewards. Some people need to stop playing WoW for a day and just go outside.
Cyanea Apr 21st 2009 3:59PM
I raid and enjoy the Argent Tournament. Enjoying one doesn't preclude enjoyment of the other, nor does people having easy access to epics make your raids any less valuable or fun.
Eternauta Apr 21st 2009 4:12PM
The problem is that SOME (not all) self-styled hardcore players complain because they believe that everything in a RPG must be a GRIND.
(They often say: -if you want quick satisfaction and rewards go play Nintendo Wii/PS3/XBoX/insert console here)
Of course I don't agree with these people.
I like WoW because it has stuff for every kind of rpg player: The casual, the hardcore, the roleplayer, the pvp'er, the raider, etc.
Like the advertisement says: "What's your game?"

@ Eternauta -
This is well put, and my sentiments, exactly. I think people tend to get so wrapped up in their own style of play, that they forget that this game isn't meant solely for them. This game is meant to be enjoyable for all types of players, be that casual, hardcore, role-players, raiders, pvpers, etc. Just as Eternauta said.
I can't help but feel that people who often believe they should be more entitled to things, than others, based on THEIR style of play, are a little elitist and selfish. Why would anyone begrudge anyone else of enjoyment in a game where everyone is paying the exact same amount, every month? I'm sorry, your $15 isn't better than mine, nor does it make you more worthy of certain in-game enjoyments.
That being said, most things worth having in the game, come at a price. Whether that be grinding (which takes time, whether you consider yourself casual or hardcore), playing your patience with the rng, etc.
I really like the argent tournament and think it definitely adds flavor to the game. I can't wait to buy the tabards, pets, and more. This'll take a while, sure. But, like I said, all neat things in the game come at a price. If you don't enjoy that sort've thing, then that's just fine, of course. But honestly, I can't understand why anyone would possibly need to complain about it. It just doesn't make much logical sense. If you don't think the argent tournament is worth doing, then don't do it.

100% Agree.

I think it's fine how it is. The gear should bnot be Uber end game, it adds more story and the items look great and are well polished.

I'm really enjoying the tournament for the flavor items, not the weapons and armor. I think Blizz did a great job on it.
The ability to set a Silvermoon banner down in front of the Alliance-only area in Dalaran while leading my orc slave-child on a leash is priceless.
Maegwynn Apr 21st 2009 3:11PM
Why must everything be gear oriented. It can't just be done because it's fun? That's what the tournament is to me, just having fun building towards something and making some gold as I do it. I'm quite happy to only get a pet, etc and get my gear from raiding.
GormanGhaste Apr 21st 2009 3:43PM
Exactly, and another thing people are missing out on is the gold--once you become a champion, just doing those 4 dailies will give you over 90 gold a day. And don't forget the pets are BoE--if you don't like pets, sell them on the AH for even more gold!
Ilya Apr 21st 2009 4:10PM
Agreed. For starters, fishing isn't really gear oriented, but people do it anyway. Neither is the World Explorer achievement.
It's not just the Argent Tournament that's fun, there's other aspects. And I agree, I've never seen the Tournament as a replacement for raiding; my blood elf warlock only snags about two upgrades from the Silvermoon quartermaster. Not remarkable, but who knows, there might be more with the other cities.
And yeah, it's fun to trample the Boneguard Footmen while I'm duking it out with the Lieutenants. Never a more satisfying moment.
tulipblossom Apr 21st 2009 6:59PM
I completely agree. I'm really enjoying the argent tournament and gear hadn't even crossed my mind, to be honest. I'm excited about the pets, the tabards, the banners, and the neat title that you can get once you've become exalted with a city and championed it. I can't wait to see people running around with "so and so of gnomeregan" and such.
And, like a poster mentioned above, I really love the lances, too. I think they're perfect and so so well done. I can't wait to become a champion. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we get one more new lance and that it's got a little emblem of the city we're championing on it. I would love that!
profglitch Apr 21st 2009 3:08PM
There's nothing wrong with this content. It keeps the casuals out of raids, where they do not belong.

Oh please...
