Around Azeroth: Worth the wait
Baron Rivendare's mount may be significantly easier to get in Wrath of the Lich King -- it's now a 1% drop as opposed to the previous one in five thousand chance -- but it's still quite a grind. After winning the rare steed, Mat decided to immortalize his new prize in a few screenshots from around Northrend."The scene is all that the game is to me," he writes. "The desire to explore the beautiful world of Azeroth and discover truly epic moments like this." I hope you and your horse are very happy together, Mat. But not in that way.
Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see them on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word "Azeroth" in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards, double-mounts, or pictures of the Ninja Turtles in Dalaran.

I recently went back to Stratholm for a few solo runs to bring my Argent Dawn rep up to Exalted for the "Argent Champion" title.
Lo and behold! First run, and the Deathcharger's Reins drop! Needless to say it made a few people in my guild rather jealous...

I do not understand why people work so hard for this mount. Its just not that great.

It's a prestige thing. People aren't in it for the appearance. They want it just to prove they could get it.
Well, some people might be in it for the appearance. It's not all that out-dated yet.

Although I love the skeletal horses (well, all bar the new white one, which looks odd)... I have to agree with you, its just got a blue drape thing (rain cover?) instead of red/green/purple one.
Okay if your alliance then yes, this is the bees knees if your forever thinking "I wish I rolled a horde" or "Alliance aint half as fun as my horde main", but other than that its nothing special other than its rarity.

A lot of people (myself included) just want to make up for all the times they've run Strat at level 60 and the mount *didn't* drop.

Some people are trying to get mount achievements, and this is better than the other options they have. For example, when I was 49/50 for my Albino Drake, I ran Strat quite a lot of times trying to get this. Why? I hate PvP with a passion as a squishy PvE holy priest, and those were the only other soloable mounts I could look for.
Eventually, I dragged the husband kicking and screaming to get us both all four bugs. Suprisingly it only took about an hour to get us all four, including the red one. :o
Still looking for more mounts though... will be running this some more soon.

Is this easily attainable by say a 73 level death knight?
offday Apr 21st 2009 11:37AM
I was wondering that too. Do you need to be level 80 to solo this?
Branwyn Apr 21st 2009 11:59AM
Well, people were soloing it at 70...

Apparently being in it for the appearance is a curse.
one day...

I've finally just given up and gotten exalted with the Undercity.

I think its one of the coolest mounts in the game and its the one I use the most. I managed to get one pre 3.0 when it was super rare - took several hundred runs :/.

I just like blue mounts. Second favorite color of mount being black. After the droprate change I ran it twice before getting it lol. I salute people who it didn't come so easy for.

A fellow guildie of mine had been running Strat for what seemed like years (and it was!) but finally got lucky a few weeks ago thanks to her dedication and the improved drop rate - excuse the painfully long URL but I'd be kicked if I didn't provide the story link that followed!

Grats to the "Matt" featured in the story above - it's a nice small club you guys are in. In a game like WoW, that's a pleasantly rare thing.

I've killed Rivendare about 30 times now, still no drop, but I didn't expect one so soon anyway.
I'm not going for any mount achievement or anything, but since my (Alliance) Death Knight has become my main, I've really wanted to get him a mount that felt like it would work with a DK, while not being the Acherus Deathcharger that every single other DK rides around on.

Hmm, I ran the place 858 times in BC (I'm not a vanilla player) soloing the hell out of Baron and pushing myself every time to get faster and faster at completing the Baron run. Wasn't into PvE back then, and had the PvP gear I could manage, so pretty much my entire WoW time was dedicating to getting this stupid thing. I was a Shockadin specced paladin back then, fun stuff.
Finally got the Deathcharger after 151 runs post-Wrath. Being level 80 and retribution with a ton of attack power made running Strat way too easy, and I found myself hitting the instance limit too many times.
But at least now I have it, and I can "officially" progress my character's story where he accidentlly kills off his mount only to revive it later through necromancy.

I've done 75 runs so far for this, its a large amount but in comparison to some its quite small but... the amount of people I see with 20 or less runs and they have the mount makes me die inside. Theres lots of people I've seen with it and they had just 3 runs!
If only the Baron would hand me his mount for milk and cookies.
Rai Apr 21st 2009 3:42PM
Took me 73 runs to get it and took one guildmate 5 tries, and two 1 try (believe it or not).
You know what? It was totally worth it.
