MMO Roundup: Last week on Massively
Sometimes you'd like to know that there are other MMOs out there, right? Our sister site Massively can provide you with everything you need to know about all MMOs, including WoW! Check out this roundup of the latest news from the wider MMO world.
Face-capturing tech to be "in-game soon" for Age of Conan Lopping off heads in Age of Conan might soon be taken very personally, as ShackNews has reported that some fancy face-importing technology is being prepared for use in-game -- you're bound to be just a tad more put out when you see your actual face rolling away on a decapitated noggin. The technology itself comes from a company called Big Stage Entertainment, and you can already get a feel for how it works at their website by registering an account and creating your own 3D "@ctor".

SOE storms the internet with Free Realms beta promotions This weekend saw one of the largest beta key giveaways in MMO history with tens of thousands of special codes being handed out at once by several different outlets. Aside from the normal MMO news and fan sites, the Free Realms Twitter account has been giving away a thousand keys at a time.

A rocky start for Warhammer's 1.21 patch Patch day in an MMO is always hit or miss, but according to a number of sources, Mythic's 1.21 patch for Warhammer Online broke many core components of the game that still haven't been fixed several days later. A public acknowledgment appeared on the WAR Herald this past weekend, but some players are still furious.
As the moon wanes, Shadowbane is no more The developers of Shadowbane will shut down its servers for the last time on May 1st, 2009. The closure comes only weeks after its 6th year anniversary and a year after the historic "Shadowbane Reboot," which relaunched the game to take advantage of better stability and performance architecture.

City of Heroes player created content surpasses dev's in 24 hours It seems as though Paragon Studios have hit content gold with their Issue 14 free update and its Mission Architect system. In the short span of just one day, the City of Heroes community has made more content for the game than has been built during the entirety of the game's life. And even though initial excitement is bound to sizzle down as time passes, we can't wait to see what kinds of missions come out of the players who stick with it over the coming weeks and months.

A year of EVE Evolved - 5 most popular articles Next week marks the one year anniversary of my weekly EVE Evolved column on EVE Online. I can hardly believe it's been a year since I was the newbie here at Massively, learning the ropes. To celebrate the one year anniversary of the EVE Evolved column, Massively is giving you the chance to win a free battleship of your choice, pre-fitted and ready to undock.

Evolving past the Diku design Even though I wasn't around for the progenitors that would eventually lead to things like Ultima Online, EverQuest, Dark Age of Camelot and World of Warcraft, it's not hard for me to see in the wake of all those titles the line of ideas and creativity that connects all of them. Hell, you can trace it back to the original release of Dungeons and Dragons if you really wanted to, but let's focus on the future for today

I notice most of the people who want to get away from Diku seem to want not progress but simply a return to UO. Fact is, the tank/healer/dps Holy Trinity exists for a reason, and that reason is that the system works and it gives several people something to do. People seem to have this idea that the Holy Trinity only survives because it's how WoW does it.

The Age of Conan plans for that technology were clarified as... uh, not happening. They just want to put the face capturing in games -in general-

Age of Conan (or any games), doing face-capturing technology. Shyah, right.
Someone didn't learn the lesson when Bally tried it for that old Journey video game (the one featuring the rock band). Bally tried that face-capture thing waaaaay back in the 80s, but stopped cold when players captured...um...other things...instead of their faces.

Yeah, what are they gonna do when some idiot tries to be funny and scans his junk or his asscrack instead?
Aruhgulah Apr 25th 2009 12:13PM
....which is exactly what happened in the Journey videogame, Tethra. :)

Face capturing for online 3d avatars... Oooo... that may be an interesting idea...
Hmm.. wouldn't work for most people being translated into a, oh you know, a Tauren, for example.
Then again, I'm sure my sister could show us all how much of a troll she really is ^_^
