Patch 3.1.1 notes released
As we posted earlier, patch 3.1.1 is going live today. The official patch notes have now been posted to the WoW forums. Here are highlights; I'll put the full patch notes behind the cut.
- In order to address issues with the dual talent specialization system, all players will have their talents points refunded. Players who have purchased dual talent specializations will have both specializations reset. Glyphs will not be affected by this reset.
- Characters who are not of the same race or class are once again able to view each others' professions linked in chat.
- The mob packs in the XT-002 Deconstructor encounter can now be engaged separately and are no longer linked.
Yeah, it's a pretty small patch.

on a side note its funnny tha tI JUST started a 2nd DK on my alt server so I specced him fromscratch last gnight up to lvl 74 where i stopped >_< i was gonna lvl unholy now I am thinking frost (blood = to easy)
Moonduh Apr 21st 2009 12:54PM
Yeah, same here. I messed up two of my toons' specs (>.

Don't forget that you can "Preview" your specs now before you set them. You just have to go turn the option as, as it's not on as a default. It's in Interface -> Display, then the bottom option in the right hand column.
You'll have to do it for each one of your characters if you have alts. It doesn't seem to carry across. I learned that the hard way when I was being careless 'cause I thought I was safe...

@Dave. I've been reading these blogs for god knows how long. That's the single most useful thing I've read. Thank you. When did they add this?
Ascudgamin Apr 27th 2009 11:39PM
they made the change in Patch 3.1 It is the single most helpful thing that they have added, it is a god send, no more wasting 25g whenever my mouse goes wacky and shoots to the left as i click on a talent and it gives me the useless one. YAY

You know, resetting talents is a real pain. I can never remember *exactly* what I've spent and where (over my 7 alts) so I never end up spec'ed the same way twice after these things.
It'd be better if blizzard OFFERED a free re-spec instead of forcing everyone to place their talent points all over again. That way those of us who were happy with their choices could keep them the same, and those that weren't could play with their points to their heart's content.
cjshrader Apr 21st 2009 11:59AM
I'm sure they have to do it to fix the issue, it's not just them being nice. If they can avoid it I'm sure they don't reset the talent points.
Hansbo Apr 21st 2009 12:00PM
I think they NEED to reset the talent points to deal with the bugs.
And if they change too much your spec wont be the same anyway. I hardly think they do it for the players..
Phlegmy Apr 21st 2009 12:01PM
Do what I did: just go to your armory page and "Export Build" for each of your specs.
smiley Apr 21st 2009 12:06PM
yea they had to reset all the talents, some people upon dual speccing were actually losing talent points as if they were a lvl 70 or 60 yet an 80
i don't think they could jut reset em for the peopel who got dual specs :D
BunnyGirl Apr 21st 2009 12:09PM
I just use delicious.com to bookmark my specs from online talent calcs. This is particularly useful when you want to change specs (prior to dualspecs reducing that need) or if your 2nd spec is occasionally swapped between a couple of variations.
Phaelan Apr 21st 2009 12:11PM
or down load a talent addon that saves your talent specs, Talented is a good one, i'm sure there are a couple more out there too

...or, you could just keep up-to-date records of your toons' builds. Either jot them down in a notebook or take screenshots. It's really not that difficult. Unless you inexplicably don't have the kind of OCD that leads to altoholism in the first place, it's beyond me why someone with that many toons isn't already doing that. Especially when Blizzard announces far in advance that refunds are coming, as they did with 3.1. I've 9 active toons (12 if you count the 3 I abandoned on my original home server), and it took me a grand total of 20 minutes to respec all of them on patch day, because I had records. The majority of that was spent on loading screens. And the only reason it took that long was because a couple of those toons needed complete overhauls (my DK and my main, a lock).
Blizzard doesn't do talent refunds arbitrarily just to make your life hard, they do them for a good reason. If there's a serious bug with the talenting system, as there has been since 3.1 dropped, having some people keep points as is will not address the problem. Stop complaining and take some initiative to manage your toons yourself, Blizzard did not put a gun to your head and make you have so many. If you think that's too much work...I don't know what to say, maybe having that many toons to keep track of isn't for you. It's admittedly not for everyone.

I'm not ragging on you or anything, but you should really be thoroughly familiar with your spec, and why you chose those talents. When I'm thinking of what to do with a character I go to wowhead and do a build. Then I generally go to elitist jerks and look at the cookie cutter build, and consider what the differences are. After doing a few test builds you should be well versed in what you took, and why you took it - and therefore able to reproduce your spec whenever you need to. Sometimes you have a class/spec with an odd talent point to place, but if it wasn't an earth shattering difference, it probably didn't matter much in the first place.
Kyle Apr 21st 2009 12:51PM
I just used the Armory to export the talent builds I wanted to archive from my character profile into the talent calculator, and saved the URLs in a text file.
Dameblanche Apr 21st 2009 1:52PM
I prefer to make .jpg screenshots instead of exporting and linking the build, because sometimes the links don't work well and I also keep a nice database of former specs on my computer this way. (I can fiddle for AGES with the specs of my 15+ characters and try 4 different builds in the calculator before i am happy)
Just open your build in the Armory. Use the print screen key on the keyboard of your PC and Control-V the screenshot in any picture edit program (like Photoshop or Paint, which comes free with Windows). On the Mac you can use Grab, which is free as well and I think it comes standard with OSX, in the Utilities folder or the applications folder (I forgot if I downloaded it as freeware or already found it on my Mac)

Not ranting either Dan but i agree with Zappo on this one.
To each his own but technically, your build shouldn't be so complex that it can't be done again. If you are going from memory maybe you might put a point "here rather than there" so see what you are saying Dan but still...
Wolftech Apr 21st 2009 4:53PM
Use Talented. You can not only save your specs as templates, and apply them at once, you can import builds from sites like Wowhead or build your own and save.
Aurendar Apr 21st 2009 11:57AM
Hopefully that bug in Survival hunters talents gets fixed. While it's not really hurting anything, it's annoying to not see any talent points in Black Arrow!
