The Queue: Cats rule, dogs drool
Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Alex Ziebart will be your host today.Today's edition of The Queue will be pretty short and sweet. Many of the questions that were asked yesterday have since been answered in other places around the site, so I just went ahead and skimmed over those ones
to answer what hasn't been addressed already. Ready? Set? Let's go!
Becky asked...
"I may be wrong but it seems to me of all the in-game non-combat pets, there are no dogs but plenty of cats. What's with the lack of dogs? My mage wants a puppy."
You know, I can't ever recall seeing any dogs in Warcraft at all. The closest thing to dogs being kept as pets that we've witnessed are all wolves, worgs, or coyotes. We even get worg, wolf and coyote non-combat pets ourselves (not just NPCs), but nothing that's modeled like a domesticated dog. Maybe cats are easier to model somehow? Or the Blizzard devs are all cat people. I'm pretty okay with that. Cats > Dogs.
BooMsx asked...
"What were the plaguelands called before the plague?"
Lordaeron.
Crewdie asked...
"So I was looking at Wowwiki at all the Ulduar bosses and found a couple of names that seem familiar such as Freya (who has an avatar in Sholazar Basin). That one didn't really bug me as much as Hodir. I mean, shouldn't his sons be a little upset that we go around trying to beat him up in Ulduar? Or are his "sons" against him?"
The Watchers have all come under Yogg-Saron's influence. If you do the quests out in the Storm Peaks, the Watchers have all been twisted and turned against eachother via Yogg-Saron and Loken's treachery. When we fight Freya and Hodir and all of them in Ulduar, we're fighting Yogg-Saron's dark influence. By freeing the Watchers from Yogg-Saron's grasp, we're probably making the Sons of Hodir even happier with us than they ever were before.
Vaydos asked...
"Whatever happened to being able to confirm/save talent specs before finishing them? I know this was a nice feature I was looking forward to in 3.1"
This is in patch 3.1, but you need to turn the feature on. It's off by default. Go into your main menu, open up the Interface menu, then click Display. The option for it should be in that panel.

There's also a dog (named "Dog ") in Freewind Post, Thousand Needles.

Actually there are dogs in WOW look at the BS in arathi basin there is a dog chasing a cat around. so not sure why we don't have non-combat pets.
Yaikage Apr 21st 2009 5:27PM
Actually, the horde version is a mini demon dog sharing the tirisfal model, and the alliance one is still a wolf type model. Can't seem to find anything close to any modern dog breeds, closest i can think of are the hounds you find with the scarlet dudes (like houndmaster lockley's pets) and the ones you summon with the dog whistle.
Now the way i see it is, modern dog breeds are relatively new and the result of alot of select breeding. Cat breeds on the other hand may require less breeding, that or dogs are just starting to be domesticated in wow (since the scarlet hounds seem to be still quite feral looking) and cat breeds are actively being bred (crazy cat lady in goldshire?)

@ Yaikage
The Scarlet Hounds are just recoloured hyenas. And hyenas aren't related to dogs IIRC.

omg, so If The Plaugelands are Lordaeron, then what is UnderCity?
Reading the lore ect, i still get confused as to what the areas are.
Lordaeron, is that a Kingdom or area now? All this time i thought Undercity was teh Ruins of Lordaeron...
Been playing forever and you'd think i would know this.

It's the realm of Lordaeron with the capital city holding the same name. I believe it used to be the capital of the Humans until the plague came.
If I'm not mistaken, Tirisifal, and the Plaguelands were all one large, lush forest.
oddworld Apr 21st 2009 5:20PM
think of Lordaeron like New York (and thus New York City). Undercity is the ruins of Lordaeron, the city - but Lordaeron, the city was the center of Lordaeron, the kingdom - and that kingdom is now the Plaguelands
Caz Apr 21st 2009 5:21PM
Essentially, the Plaguelands=Lordaeron. Undercity=Lordaeron.
They have same name same name.

Sashayla Apr 21st 2009 5:22PM
There's Lordaeron (the continent), Lordaeron (the fallen kingdom), and Lordaeron (the capital city of the kingdom, now the Undercity).
Those humans weren't very creative in their naming?
Omniprime Apr 21st 2009 5:33PM
Undercity was Capital City before it was became occupied by the forsaken.
Lordaeron came to be when the humans allied together against the Horde becoming the Alliance of Lordaeron.

Re: Dogs as pets, there's that dog owned by an NPC in Hillsbrad on which horde players use a poison for a quest given by an apothecary, but IIRC even there the dog has the same model as a worg.
It *is* weird. I guess they might say it's not worth the trouble, but there are a hundred pointless vanity pets out there.

The quest in mulgore "Kyle's gone missing" has you find Ahab Wheathoofs lost puppy. It's the quest that Ezra helped design as part of that Make a Wish thingy.

The puppy is actually a wolf pup, not a dog.
Fuseitana Apr 22nd 2009 11:30AM
No, sorry. According the the quotes in wowwiki, he is a dog.
Will you help me find my dog?
Where is that dog?
I miss my dog so much!
birdtongue Apr 22nd 2009 1:08PM
having done this quest, i can tell you that Kyle's model is the wolf. speech and text aside, he is a wolf or coyote pup.

What about Farmer Ray's dog Stanley in Hillsbrad Fields? Of course, you have to kill him after poisoning him...
Azizrael Apr 21st 2009 5:33PM
My brother has a Bulldog puppy called Stanley... I skipped this quest :)

Still a wolf.
Fuseitana Apr 22nd 2009 11:32AM
Nope, sorry - again. According to wowwiki, Stanley is a dog.
"Stanley is a friendly level 24 dog found in the Hillsbrad Foothills. Stanley is Farmer Ray's pet."
birdtongue Apr 22nd 2009 1:34PM
and again, the MODEL is a wolf/coyote. people aren't wanting an animal they can call a dog, they want one that LOOKS like a domesticated dog. plenty of dogs irl named "Cat"... doesn't make them one. :p
