Curse Client for Mac

Curse Client for Mac has been a long time in the making. With the 3.0 version that came out recently, they finally have a client that appears to run (on Intel/10.5 Macs, anyway), even if it does display a wxWidgets error upon first launch (which can safely be ignored). I've been using it to manage my addons for the past week in order to bring an informed review, so here goes.
The first thing you notice about Curse Client is that it just doesn't look like a Mac app. It's got these weird tabs up top with icons in them, the main icons for initiating events are unfamiliar and un-Mac-like, and it summons odd progress bars that float on top of all your other windows in the lower-right-hand corner (odd progress bar depicted at right).
However, if you can get over all that, it actually works quite well for keeping your addons up-to-date. It scans my directory of about 100 addons pretty quickly and fetches information on any release-quality upgrades (or whatever level of upgrading you set as your preference) that are available, downloads and installs them efficiently, and lets me get on with my playing.
Another feature I find convenient is the ability to handle "install via Curse Client" web links. Being able to install a mod with one click from a web site is nice, especially for an addon junkie like me. This feature does not appear to work if you click a link while Curse Client is not open. It does launch the client, but the addon never downloads and installs (despite the presence of a progress bar).
On the other hand, there are still some things about Curse Client that do not please me. Foremost is its unnecessary invasiveness. I don't want an icon in my menu bar whenever I have the program open (at right), and I don't want Curse Client to start up every time I log in; I just want to update my addons every so often. I can change the start-at-login behavior from the preferences, but the default (to start at login) is wrong. There isn't any way to remove the useless menu bar icon that I know of.
I'm also told that the Windows client by default installs an addon that mines your data and uploads it to Curse, which is unacceptable behavior, but this isn't the Windows review, so I'm not going to say any more on that point.
The icons, which seem to be the primary interface for most actions in the client (checking for updates, installing addons, removing addons), are less than intuitive, and are certainly non-standard. I would like to see more standard Mac OS interface elements in a future version. And what's with swoopy-arrow meaning "update all addons"? I'd like to see multiple overlapping arrows, or something like that.
There is one big functionality issue. For a substantial minority of mods, even if they're on the Curse site, they turn up as "unidentified" and have to be re-installed via Curse Client before you can update them automatically. I don't know what the deal is with that. And of course mods that aren't on Curse don't show up in the client, but there's not much to be done about that.
So, Curse coders: if you can fix the non-sensible defaults, get rid of the menu bar icon, improve the icons, solve that wxWidgets error, stop cluttering up my screen with progress bars that should be in the main window, and figure out why some addons aren't being detected, you'll have a great client on your hands. Until then, it does the job, and that's really what matters.

Why is not available to PowerPC users??? Lame...

Curse's claim is that the PPC isn't supported because of the use of wxWidgets in the development of the client. It was ported to the Macs from the original Windows-only version, and that is at the heart of the issue. They have stated that they "are looking into" using Qt for future development, which would enable them to provide support not only for the PPC but for OS versions earlier than 10.5... which they currently do not support.

..but apparently they dont know what theyre doing with wxWidgets, since their client causes an error... seriously, why would anyone use this shabby app..?
oh, wait -- because they cut off WoWMatrix: a pissing match that leaves us with one company's inferior knockoff product...
it would be like Fighters History getting Street Fighter II pulled for copyright infringement... at least the gaming community never had to see THAT day...

The technical reasons are with wxWidgets. However, wxWidgets did not suddenly become a toolkit that produces non-native LAF (look-and-feel) applications with fewer platforms supported. The current situation is due to 6-12 months ago, curse, knowing that, chose to use wxWidgets and hasn't replaced it in the interim.
I'm not saying that curse is the first software developer to make tradeoffs to compromise quality to save time/money although my guess is it will turn out to have been quicker/cheaper to do it correctly the first time. Certainly there is always pressure to reduce time/cost these days.
[There were a few updaters that were just a Python script, and the curse Mac client has been discussed since July, so I would have expected more progress by now. but w/e. While none of my software has ever shipped late, I have heard of other developers being late. :-)
Regardless, we are where we are and I hope the rewrite to fix the 3.0 client goes well and quickly.

In the aftermath of the WowMatrix block, I installed the Curse Client on my Macbook Pro to test it for deployment to the other Macs for which I'm responsible. I wrote up my findings to post on a Curse-provided blog, as well as to the Blizz forums. The findings can be found here: http://www.curse.com/blogs/maccormaic/archive/2009/04/15/a-rush-test-curse-client-for-mac.aspx

Nice review. I'll give this tool a pass for now. Maybe when they add 10.4 support and fix the UI issues I might give it a try.
I miss you WoWMatrix...even if you were a bandwidth thief.

Nice review.
I deleted this ASAP though, because eventually you will have to pay for it. I usually only upgrade add ons post patch anyway, why should I waste my money in something that I spend 30 mins doing once every 4 months? Seems pointless.

SCATHING review! I'm willing to cut the developer some slack - all he did was port an existing, popular and full featured program. From what I can see in the review (I don't currently have an OS X install to test it) a large portion of your complaints exist in the PC version.
It's pretty clear that this wasn't written from the "Mac mindset" you see in a lot of cocoa apps, but it's not a bad effort.

Now if we could get them to release this application as a Universal application, those of us that do not have 10.5 or intel macs would also be able to update our Curse addons as well. Since they decided to shut down Wowmatrix, I simply have too many to update by hand. If you are going to PROHIBIT a product that is better than yours from accessing your database, then at least come out with a product to replace it that fills the niche the previous product had. Only reason I ever used wowmatrix was cuz it was the only one for the mac.

I just used WoWMatrix this morning without issue and just checked the site and there is no mention of shutting it down. Where did you hear that?
I am a mac guy but honestly I am really getting fed up with this "Only runs on 10.5" crap. While MS has its problems very rarely do I see "runs on Vista only". Im sure it happens but I cant think of a single thing right now. They are very good at not breaking backward compatibility.

Im not talking about Wowmatrix not working, i'm talking about the Curse client not being available for 10.4. Its also not the operation system that is the issue, it requires an intel mac. I tried to install the curse client the other day and it said that the architecture was different.
Wowmatrix works fine for me, and I use it for all the addons that it can download, which is about 60% the rest is all curse. Wowmatrix gives you a little message with the ones that they cant update because curse shut them out.
Here is the wowinsider article on the shutdown in case you didnt read it:
http://www.wowinsider.com/2009/04/14/curse-wow-interface-band-together-to-block-wowmatrix/
You will notice that the curse addons have a little link in the status column that says "read me" or something and when you click there is a message popping up apologizing and explaining why.
Here is the post from cruse.com:

Eh, it's less an OSX thing than lazy widget developers. 10.5 opened up an easier cross-development path, so we got a flood of tools that depend on Intel architecture, and aren't easily ported to PPC. So they just mark it as "depends on 10.5/Intel" and move on. On the whole it's great if you aren't still using a 2.5-3 year old PPC mac, as we're getting a ton of stuff that wouldn't even be _considered_ in the PPC days.

Read your own post . You said
"Since they decided to shut down Wowmatrix, I simply have too many to update by hand. "
Like I asked. Where did you hear about shutting down wowmatrix.
NGP Apr 22nd 2009 1:12PM
I wrote "Shut out" Not "Shut Down" They Shut them out from accessing their databases
Arcus Apr 22nd 2009 1:41PM
No you wrote "shut down". READ YOUR OWN FREAKING POST!

1) I use an email addon plan. It really works for me. 100 addons. Updating every week or so . 8 - 12 minutes
http://community.livejournal.com/worldofwarcraft/7776364.html
2) They didn't have a choice. It was either block wow matrix or go under. They could not wait until their new clients were ready.

3) Arcus - there was a post on the UI/Macros forum and on the wow interface site. The best thread I've found I've linked above. Wow insider won't let me link more than 3 URLs so you'll have to click on e of the ones above and go to the start of the thread.
After this has happened , wow matrix has now gone back to hosting addons with out the authors permissions or in some cases hosting old versions of addons with a GPL license. Which is why wow matrix "seems" to work for you

I've been using it and i really like the idea. Well done. I find it simple and effective!

So since I asked this before... but this is more Mac realted since that's what I have.
What's a good coordinate add-on that isn't a resource hog and invasive.
Macs don't like invasive :P

You want Suki's Minimap Coords, which you can locate at http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/project-5747.aspx. Very small, very easy to use. I use it on my Mac.

Any word on a Linux version yet? That's what made WoWMatrix so nice for me.
