WoW Moviewatch: Green Funeral
InsertSh4de posted Green Funeral over on Warcraft Movies. The author says up front that it's his first video, so keep that in mind when looking it over. It's important to realize that an author's first video isn't necessarily an expression of his long term work. He's learning the ropes, learning what's possible with the software, and his vision is "trapped" inside those limitations.
That being said, "Green Funeral" is a parody of Billy Idol's "White Wedding." InsertSh4de wins huge points for that fact alone. You can admittedly see it's his first video. He warns that he felt the background was lazy, though I actually wouldn't have come to that conclusion myself. While the video's background isn't a finely tuned vista, I thought it was stylized and simple. It focuses the audience on the singer and dancers, not on the background setting.
I liked the singer, and thought it was a decent parallel to Billy Idol. I'm not sure I'm a fan of the Draenei dancers. They were a little too static for me. Even forgiving the token bum shots, I really could have used different scenes of them moving. Using the same clip over and over made it feel repetitive, even while the night elf was relatively active.
Ultimately, I think InsertSH4de could grow well. The video was fun, and the machinima work itself wasn't horrible. I liked his lyrics. I think if he spends more time on the video itself, he'll get some really great results.

..ugh, what was with that background x_x?
I guess it's ok for a first time, but man, that background was really distracting and at first, I thought it was my graphics messing up or something xD

WHY?
Keyra Apr 23rd 2009 1:08AM
^^ This.
Definitely this.
Most assuredly, absolute, positively this.

It may be a nice try for a first time, but when you have to spend the majority of the article making excuses... shouldn't that tell you something?

I agree. There’s nothing really remarkable about this video at all. I fail to see this “vision” Gray is speaking of. It’s just another music video parody and not a very good one at that. There’s nothing in this video to suggest that the author has some great future in store for him in machinima; he might, but this practice clip certainly doesn’t illustrate it.
Finally, we don’t measure works of art by their concepts but by how well their concepts are executed and carried out. When the artists don’t have the necessary skills to convey the full idea of his work, the piece suffers. No offense to the video’s author, but I’d like to see videos where the artists behind them succeeded in conveying an interesting idea effectively and without excuses. I’d like to watch good videos.

I'd like to never hear anything this horrid again... and I listen to death metal.

Just because rock band tells you you can sing, doesn't really mean you can. Please if you're gonna make a movie that involves singing find someone who can... The lyrics are stupid too. It's pretty much GG

Moviewatch has really gone downhill since you took over the column. Too much parody song crap and Britney trash. Gief new columnist.
BaronSoosdon Apr 22nd 2009 3:22PM
And that is the columnists fault, how?
If you find a machinima which is not either of those mentioned genres, feel free to report it to him. It's just that the higher standard machinima takes a hell of a lot more time to put together than the beginner music video.
All the higher quality releases which have come out recently have been featured on this column (in addition to the "trash").

@Psyjin
Ok,
1.Gray posts a new machinima every day M-F. And he finds a variety of diffrent Machinima to showcase.
2. Not everything is going to be your taste.
3. People do Machinama in their free time for fun, they're not getting paid for it.
4.If you really hate what is being posted so much, why don't you try making one and see how people find it.
As for the video, I liked it. It's nice to see that not every wow parody song is rap (not that i don't like those vids, i do). Good movie InsertSh4de, hope to see your next one :)

Enough of the music videos and parodies. Please show some real machinima... what ever happened to stuff like Azerothian Super Villians or Dude Where's my Mount? I'm not saying show episodes of these, but show some real stuff besides just some music and L80ETC.
Keyra Apr 22nd 2009 4:26PM
The problem lies in the fact that music videos tend to be the easiest to do as there is no overall plot that needs to be devised, no real script that needs to be working, most likely no voiceovers or even other recording that needs to be done - just adjust the elements to fit the music. Thus, you see WAY more music vids than you do any other kind.
Sels Apr 22nd 2009 4:54PM
8 of the 15 movies posted in April were NOT music videos. Did you miss all those?
TECKA Apr 22nd 2009 4:29PM
Out off all the Machinima you choose this one?
Sels Apr 22nd 2009 4:47PM
Feel free to e-mail him with suggestions.

Not bad for a first try - we can't all be perfect the first time. The Dran dancers could have done with being a little more active and the Nelf didn't do too much either. I was distracted by his feet. I liked the background. It made the movie a little more exciting.
One big complaint tho... when singing, make the vox just a tad back in the mix. When you started the heavy shouting, it sounded pretty dire and too loud compared to the backing track. L2 mix.

Decent for a first try, but the guy's got a long way to go. And where are his shoes?
Bradley Apr 22nd 2009 6:11PM
It kinda sucks. I mean, seriously, when has a night elf ever really killed an orc? This song had the world first in it, and it was staged!
