Azeroth Idol
In the absence of a ranged weapon or wand, Druids, Shamans, Death Knights, and Paladins all have an interest in filling the little slot directly to the right of their weapons with something good. You won't get the stats from idols, totems, sigils, or librams that pure classes will get from that slot, but with luck you'll significantly improve a core ability or two. However, because these items usually affect only one or two spells or attacks, they tend to be somewhat hit-or-miss in terms of usefulness, and many specs go for a while without having anything particularly good to put there.Graylo at Gray Matter takes a look at the new idol available to Balance Druids from Ulduar-25, the Kologarn drop Idol of the Crying Wind. After running the math on its stats versus the Balance idols available for badges (Idol of Steadfast Renewal and Idol of the Shooting Star), he reaches the conclusion that this new i-level 226 item is a significant DPS loss compared to its i-level 213 cousins, even if the Druid in question is using Glyph of Insect Swarm and has the 2-piece Tier 7 bonus granting 10% additional damage to Insect Swarm. While I think it's probably a damage increase on very high-mobility fights, Graylo's math is pretty damning. It's hard to argue that a Tier 8 idol providing less than a third of the damage granted by a Naxx piece represents ideal gear scaling.
Bears in Ulduar-25 are looking forward to their first upgrade since the i-level 128 (!) Idol of Terror, but I'm not too sure about other classes. Do you have some hard choices ahead of you, or do you plan on using an older piece?

Unfortunately this, with addition of crappy starts on T8 set, lack of good leather DPS items, very serious issues with mana and survivability in PvP, shows how much devs care about us moonkins.
Cthulu Apr 24th 2009 9:10AM
Yea the idols are a joke give us sumthin goood......

I don't know about other classes, but as a resto shammie, I cant'wait to get my hands on http://www.wowhead.com/?item=45114. +243 spellpower to CH is huge, especially once I have the 4pc t8 bonus(-.2 secs off cast time for CH). Hehe, maybe I can finally dethrone my guild's holy priest from his pace on top of the healing charts. Although, tbh, I'm not finding a lot of CH friendly fights in Ulduar.

Wow, that counts as all of your totems. Is that common?
Ahima Apr 24th 2009 10:06AM
Yeah, they all say that. What it means is that we don't have to carry the 4 totem items in our bags anymore (they are now stored in the bank because you still can't delete them). It's just a convenience thing since Wrath came out.
Tushar Bharadia Apr 24th 2009 10:31AM
Yeah, since BC iirc, the totem you equip in the "ranged" slot means you can dump your four totems in the bank.

I hope they either change the current 'new' idol or give us a new one (balance druid), otherwise no one will want it.

Given that Blizz have responded to the PVE ret libram situation (a Venture Co blue or quest reward greenie (Libram of Furious Blows... that's funny, I can make a sentence using those words starting with "I'm") by nerfing the blue to crap and back (and not adding anything useful that I can detect in Ulduar)... I see the ranged slot as adding comedy value, if nothing else.
Oh, sure, if you want a halfway decent PVE ret libram, you can go get 1930 arena rating. SURE, let me get RIGHT on that.
I've long given up on the libram slot, and would equip a Libram of Pink Fluffy bunnies if there was one.
Dixonij Apr 24th 2009 9:47AM
Surprise! With the new season all you need is a paltry 1250 arena rating for the BIS PvE libram!
*facepalm @ blizz*
As a tank (now dual'd ret Paladin) I so wish I could have had the lovely stat stick that was the Armor Plated Combat Shotgun. The whole reason Blizz had to give prot paladins talents to increase stamina is because we couldn't get our hands on gear like the gun that provided an awesome Stam boost.
They really need to work on better utilizing this slot for all the specs that entail from most of the hybrid classes that use em.

Now that I gratuitously grabbed the first spot with a non-first listing post-- Idols seem to underwhelm compared to the range weapon stats that other classes get. I don't understand why the selection is so few and far between. Blizzard could easily make idols for each spec that are somewhat more meaningful and would gladly be sharded if no one needed. I think that druids get the worst slot items compared to shamans and pallies.
I would like to see the relic slot along the lines more of a 3rd trinket rather than a class specific item of little to no use.
Angry Joe Apr 24th 2009 12:24PM
Look again, you failed to grab the spot.

I vastly prefer the Badge of Justice Libram (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29388 ) to the Emblem of Heroism "upgrade" (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40707). None of the Librams from the EoVs are particularly useful for a tank, which means my first upgrade from a level 70 item, is found in heroic Ulduar (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=45145)
Jesse Apr 24th 2009 10:32AM
just throwing this out there, if you're at the soft block cap (ie, 102.4% avoidance+block with Holy Shield up) then libram of repentance is wasted block rating. Obstruction is both a mitigation increase and a threat increase (thanks to synergy with Shild of Righteousness.
Only very poorly geared tankadins will find LoR to be a time to live gain over LoO. The new Libram is an tiny overall threat increase (as it will buff all 3 ShoR's in a normal 969 rotation) and a moderate Mitigation buff (as it will add block value to cover the 4 out of 9 seconds that the block value buff wasn't up in the aforementioned 969 rotation)
honestly, though, the difference is likely to be small enough that most people won't be exactly breaking their necks to get their hands on the new Libram.

As a resto druid, I'm underwhelmed by our idol offerings as well... Before the Lifebloom nerf, at least some of our idols were useful, but now they're little more than novelties. Resto shammies get an totem that increases the effectiveness of their predominantly used healing ability by a TON, and we get an idol that increases the power of Nourish, which we only get to cast IF we have a spare GCD after we've applied all of our necessary HoTs. 'Meh' is my reaction to jsut about EVERY idol blizz has released since Tier 1.
Bod Apr 24th 2009 1:10PM
Good article. For enh shammies, excepting some arena totems, an old 115 level totem (stonebreaker's) remains best in slot. The WOTLK "upgrades" (toem of splintering/dueling) are horrid.
Nothing's changed in 3.1 so far as I can see.
It's odd that bliz miss tricks on this stuff. I can't imagine they don't do the maths, so maybe this is just some sort of crazy test.
Jamis Apr 24th 2009 11:02AM
Actually for higher enhancement gear levels, Totem of Hex, the 213 elemental totem is a much better than Splintering, Dueling, or Stonebreaker's. I was lucky enough to pick one up after our Elemental Shaman got theirs.
The sad thing is that relics are a joke when compared to other stat sticks of other classes. Totem of Dueling gives a chance on hit to add 60 haste rating for 6 seconds. If you look at some of the comparable 213 wands and ranged weapons, it's pretty clear that the totem is extremely under budget. I would love more stats on a totem that improve my overall job rather than a hit or miss relic system that's in place today.
bod Apr 24th 2009 11:11AM
I believe post 3.1 changes that hex is not superior, which is why I wrote what I did. More than happy to see some theory crafting that proves me wrong, I have it in the bank and would love to see a dps upgrade from it.

This was vexing me this very week. My main is a feral bear tank, with the ilvl 128 Idol of Terror. I have exactly ONE slot left before I ding my Superior achievement. Guess which one?
So i am stuck looking for a feral tank "superior" relic item. As I am in a small guild, I dont have access to any 10man or 20man stuffs and Im casual enough anyway that trying to PUG a raid of any kind is well outside my confort and competance level.
Which leaves me pretty damned stuck. My current plan is to spend 30 heroic badges on a relic I DONT WANT. Just to get a piddly achievement under my belt.
Cipri Apr 24th 2009 9:35AM
Buy relic, ding achievement, return relic for a full refund?
Darthregis Apr 24th 2009 9:39AM
I'm also in a pretty casual guild and found myself in the exact same predicament.
Let's just say I would have preferred to use the badges for something else...
