The pros and cons of autolooting
Gnomeaggedon has a really insightful post about one of my favorite "hidden" features in patch 3.1. The first time I ran Naxx after the patch, I was a little worried on the first boss that I couldn't loot my badges or Stone Keeper's Shards. But of course, I'd missed it in the patch notes: all of that currency stuff now works like currency should. Whenever one person in the group or raid loots it, everyone gets their own as well. No more forgetting to loot your Badge, as it all goes automatically into the currency screen. Very nice change. But as Gnomeaggedon says, there are still a few kinks in the program (aren't there always?). Quest items still don't get auto-looted, and since Badges do, that's even less encouragement to go check the loot to see if there's anything you need. He'd also like it if items got autolinked while Master Looter is on -- right now, it's the responsibility of the Master Looter to link and give out items that get looted, and that doesn't always get done clearly. That second one is kind of a good point -- my raid looter does pretty well with showing off items, so I don't really have much of an issue with that, but it would be helpful to see for sure what's in there.
But back to autolooting: the flip side of this is that if Blizzard uses autolooting too much, the game becomes that much more simple -- they already show you where the monster is and how to kill it, and now you want them to give you the loot automatically too? While it would be easier to have quest items sent to your backpack automatically, let's not forget that mobs with loot on them are shiney. It might make sense in raids to do autolooting (since everyone is grabbing for the same quest item), but autolooting while soloing might be a little too streamlined.

I love the auto-looting of badges/shards. It's one more way of making it convenient. I hated missing a Valor badge on the last boss of a Naxx wing.

I like it because I can actually F***k'n skin the dragons in obsidian sanctuary.

And let's not forget the immense time saved from chests with loot in them for bosses.
Saint Apr 24th 2009 4:50PM
Indeed.
I really hate the rush to open a chest-style loot. I was in a guild once that lost two members over an argument that started because someone opened the Chess (...) chest before the other guy. So after whining at each other, one guy and his friend just /gquit. So much drama over so stupid of things.

Badges yes, nothing more. In raids, it works, because you don't have to wait for the retard people scrambling for badges before ML has had a change to link loot and take rolls, thus slowing it down.
Now I can see why auto loot for quest items in raids is not in there because it would make the quest seem silly, or you could always change it to:
>Mob dies
> Mob's head flies right off and into Kerags Bag
> Hurray!
You need to have the taking the quest mobs head as part of the quest chain, or it just seems too catered..

"Badges yes, nothing more."
While I agree with Kerag here in that it should be "Badges...nothing more", my reasoning is a little different. Look at the looting from the programming perspective. Let's say that Player A has X Quest, Player B has Y quest, and Player C has neither quest.
If Player A is the "looter", then only item A gets looted, because Player A cannot see (or loot) item B. Likewise for Player B. As well, if Player C is the "looter" then neither item would get looted automatically, because he cannot see either item.
Autolooting Badges works nicely, programmatically, because the code is most likely very little different from just looting one Badge for an individual. I am thinking something like this:
Individual Looting:
if (Player A has not received Badges)
Player A receives Badges.
Mass Looting (in a programmatic loop):
foreach (raid member in raid group)
{
if (raid member has not received Badges)
raid member receives Badges
}
Basically, a relatively small addition to the code, where quest items would require additional checking to see if the player has completed the quest, or if they are otherwise ineligible to receive the item.
Also, throw into the mix "quest" items that only one member of the raid receives (Key to the Focusing Iris), and it gets much more complex.

We did our last full clear of Naxx 25 last weekend, and I found this auto badge looting to be hit or miss.
About half the bosses did autoloot as intended. However, I had to go physically loot badges on the other half.
Did anyone else experience this?
Eric Apr 24th 2009 4:12PM
Honestly. No. I found that I actually couldn't manually loot it if I wanted to, so I let the system do as it wished. No one in the raid seems to have missed a badge or found a boss with one on it still.
Kerag Apr 24th 2009 4:17PM
Yeah,
I find that since this was in, a lot of people are in the mind set of "Oh, don't touch badge, ML or someone else will loot it" and in the end no one loots it, until you do yourself.
Spicyness Apr 24th 2009 4:33PM
I had this happen in a pug OS. Everyone had to loot for themselves. This was before 3.1.1 though.
Draelan Apr 24th 2009 10:00PM
Just ran heroic UK, and badges auto-looted for only 1-2 additional people for each boss. The rest had to manually grab them. So, yeah, it's buggy.
Personally, I'll be double-checking those corpses just to be sure until I'm satisfied that they've got all the bugs worked out.

WI blogger that apparently has missed the neat little check box in the options menu to autoloot.... right click the dead mob move on.. all items looted... or was the comment merely flawed grammatically?
Kerag Apr 24th 2009 4:19PM
He was not referring to single person auto loot option, but asking thoughts on whether having quest items off raid bosses auto looted to raid members like the badges are now....
Gnosh Apr 24th 2009 4:21PM
and for the solo aspect, he meant
>mob dies
>crap instantly appears in your bags without clicking (which doesn't happen)
Kerag Apr 24th 2009 4:24PM
Well then I must of misunderstood
w01ph Apr 24th 2009 5:13PM
All looting, even the auto loot of emblems in raids, require a right click, by someone. I agree that killing the mob on the run, not having to stop and loot the body would be too far. But, this is my assumption, the article wasn't about not having to perform that oh so difficult task of right clicking the corpse, or chest, but rather that it would be too simple to have certain things auto-looted. The closing statement implied that we currently must right click the corpse, and then manually click each item to put them in our bags, and that changing that to auto-looting would be too much as well. I was pointing out that this style of auto-looting has been around for a very long time, I personally have had it active since discovering it a few days after rolling my first toon. OOOOO I'm stupid and lazy for checking the option to automatically put loot in my bags when I right click the corpse... please...
Jardal Apr 24th 2009 4:21PM
Really? Auto looting dumbs down the game.... REALLY?!
I'm going to do a strawman and say your opinion is that after we kill the boss we should have to do a treasure digging excursion around the boss fight room, but sometimes the loot isn't there and is instead in the ceiling. That way it's less convenient and therefor better.
Complains about convenience, I laugh so hard at them
Alkaios Apr 24th 2009 7:08PM
Yep. It's quite laughable. I love when people take every subtle change meant to minimize annoyances for GMs and RLs as the game becoming "casual".
machoflaco Apr 24th 2009 4:27PM
The best thing about it is when looting a chest like the four horsemen fight. You no longer have to wait for 24 people to grab their emblem.
Reductio_ad_absurdum Apr 24th 2009 4:40PM
Heck, while we're at it. I want to pick up a quest, mob dies automatically, quest item is transferred to me and to quest giver automatically, and the best reward is given to me.
No, too much work...
Just have WoW start up to a white screen with the words: You win!
Time saved.
