Insider Trader: Evolution of Fishing
Insider Trader is your inside line on making, selling, buying and using player-made products.Patch 3.1 brought many welcome changes to the Fishing profession, including a Turtle mount and new Fishing daily quests.
These not only add incentives to go out and fish, they also make doing a little fishing each day easier.
Of course, players can never have enough improvements, and still have many gripes about the way that the profession works.
This week, I will be discussing different perspectives on the activity, as well as the challenges that Blizzard faces when considering which changes to make, and which feedback to tackle.
Why we love to fish
Fishing can be relaxing as well as profitable. I used to love seeking out secluded areas along seldom-visited shores, perhaps in the green hues of Feralas or upon one of the many rocky outcroppings in the Bay of Storms.
Sometimes, our guild would call this "story time." One or two of us might be off fishing, another mindlessly grinding mobs, and we would tell our PuG horror stories, have a friendly debate over one game mechanic or another, and generally chat it up.
Other times, I would take a break to go on a fishing trip with a buddy that I rarely see, who seemed to exist only in the world of fishing and farming.
Combined with a little music, or perhaps a movie, and some choice snacks and drinks, fishing can be a pleasant way to spend one's time. If you've ever found yourself playing Solitaire or Bejeweled while listening to some tunes, you have the ability to enjoy fishing.
Except maybe, we hate to fish
Fishing with an intent to reach a goal, such as hitting a certain skill level or acquiring a certain number of a particular type of fish in time for raiding that night, can cause impatience and frustration.
Many players feel "forced" to level Fishing, perhaps on several characters, because of achievements and titles, Cooking, self-sufficiency, pets, and access to daily quests and their rewards.
Personally, I feel that Blizzard has done a great job at making Fishing entirely optional. After all, many of the achievement and daily rewards are related to Fishing itself, and the fish can easily be bought from other players in order to push through leveling humps in the Cooking profession.
I find it unfortunate that so many players are trying to break in to a world that they can't appreciate. The game is designed to give players a variety of activities that appeal to different types of players. Still, the leveling process can indeed be extremely slow, with one point showing up every 10-12 successful casts!
The future of Fishing: Should Blizzard improve it for the lovers or the haters?
All professions should continue to evolve over time, as does everything else in the game, from PvP to raiding. This is especially true if something seems to be wrong, unfair, or "impossible".
While Blizzard will make changes based upon player feedback, I do not always agree with the solutions that they put in place.
When considering making changes to the Fishing profession, here is the issue as I see it. There are three goals that I think need to be met, and balanced:
1. Fishing must continue to appeal to, and challenge, veteran fishermen and women. The aspects of the activity that are so beloved by this group should not be undermined or watered down for the benefit of another group.
This section of the player base thrives on rare items, profitable pool spawns, activities such as the tournament, and expansive goals such as the Salty title.
2. Players should not feel forced to take up Fishing. While there are some reasons to take up the profession other than for the love of the activity, many of those appeal to a similar group of people. For example, pet collectors might be willing to spend the time fishing, as they might otherwise simply be spending that time farming mobs.
I do not think that any incentives should be added that drive the majority of the population to the profession. The more players who "have" to fish, the more QQ'ing there will be, and subsequent changes will be geared more towards quelling that and appeasing everyone, and will be less about progress.
3. Fishing should be reasonably accessible to newcomers.Every time Blizzard dumbs down a raid encounter because of the masses who cry out that it was too difficult, when in reality, they merely expected to be able to breeze through it, were attempting it with insufficient gear or poorly trained players, they ruin it for the rest of us. How low can Deconstructor (Ulduar) go? Once we're all geared with Ulduar gear, will the encounter cease to hold any interest whatsoever?
There is a similar danger when considering changes to the Fishing profession. If Blizzard made Fishing skill points arrive every 1-3 successful casts, as some are requesting, everyone would become an angler. Fish supplies would increase, with little to no demand left for the goods. The challenging and coveted title of Salty would suddenly become, if not commonplace, less of a mark to indicate true and dedicated fishermen/women.
On the other hand, if Blizzard implements too many Salty-level activities with enticing rewards, then Fishing may seem less accessible, although I think that recent changes have actually made the profession a little more comfortable, and thus more appealing to newcomers. For example, someone with no skill could still fish in Northrend if that is more convenient, or in any major city, including Dalaran.
Changing it up
The forums are full of bright ideas for potential modifications to Fishing, although there are also several suggestions that I think would promote imbalance. Here are a few of my favorites:
- A 32-slot Fishing bag, much like the other professions bags. If you've ever spent much time fishing, I think that you would understand the benefits of something like this!
- A more interactive experience. Some of the suggestions include fish that might fight back, and fish that could be handed in to a vendor for various rewards.
- A fishing boat has been on the suggestion lists for years now. Their implementation would be more difficult than one might think, because Blizzard does not want us traveling the seas. Perhaps if the "boat" was either a living creature or something that needs to be paddled, Blizzard could simply use the same mechanism for the boat as they do for swimmers: fatigue.
The variety of amusing vendor junk that can be fished up is also a plus, and I hope they never stop adding new items. It adds an element of surprise, humor, and gives us all something to link into Guild Chat to "show off".
Discussion
Where do you fall when it comes to your fishing feelings and habits? What changes would you like to see, and what effect do you think this would have on those who participate?

As a long time fisher, I've got to say that I only really want to see two changes.
1, I'd like to see the bobbers implemented. With the dailies implemented a lot of people are fishing; it would be nice to have something that makes it easy to distinguish your bobber. Currently I've been using my bone fishing pole for this because it doesn't have a visible fishing line, which let's my bobber stand out.
2, I'd really like to see the STV tournament on a schedule like Wintergrasp or else see it removed from the Salty achievement. I'm not adverse to achievements, I'm not the best ever, but I'm sitting at around 5000 points. The thing is the tournament is always the same time and I can never make it. So I get 3-4 chances to do it a year on vacations, and then I have to compete with huge crowds.

I have to agree...I play on a pvp server and not only does the placement make it very difficult for me to even attempt the achievement I must also deal with the massive numbers of horde that frequent that area.
The timing is also an issue as I am usually out doing something else on Sundays and do not have time to play...
Maybe a tournament every couple hours is not possible as it would make certain items to easily accessible. But there should be some compromise because many casual players are unable to show up every weekend to try to win the tournament.

I got the Salty achievement already but I was in the same situation for a few years. I always worked on Sundays. In two years, I think I only made it three times when I got off early for some reason. When I changed jobs, I had Sundays free again and was able to complete it. I would not be opposed to them adding one more day, say a weekday evening, for the tournament.

I agree on dropping the stranglethorn fishing part of the title - I'm a Brit that still plays on an EU server but now lives in the US. To make the fishing comp I'd have to get up at 6am on a Sunday - just a bit too much like he real fishing for my liking!

I agree, the fishing tourney time needs to be adjusted. I have only done it a few times because of the inconvienent time frame. Sunday is pretty much booked in RL until the evening. I really enjoyed fishing in Stv since it has so much floating wreckage and a time=reward system appeals to me personally. To sit there and throw a line in the water repeatedly is mind numbing and I don't care how many casts it takes to level, give us a chance to get a green, recipe, trade supplies, or just some silver would make the experience worth the time investment. The way I see things, while leveling, fishing is a waste of limited time I have to gain experience and at 80 there are better things to do with far better rewards. Fishing = work.

As someone who works day shift in Operations I can agree to your number 2. It would be nice to have rotating or random times or something to that effect. I still believe it should be part of the Salty title though.
I've worked Sundays even before the notion of a STV fishing tournament was conceived.

I quite agree. If something like Brewmaster gets moved then i think Winning a one only a week competition where there are regular people spoiling it so their Gmates can win is perfect reasonable. In fact id go so far to say winning the competition should ONLY give a feat of strenght, not actual achievement points also. That would get all the achievement wh*res AWAY from my fishing pools, leaving just the people who WANT to fish.
Amun Apr 25th 2009 5:29PM
All they would need to do to limit the range of fishing boats is to have great and monstrous sea monsters appear at the edges of the map. Once players have had their heads bitten off they won't be able to get very far!
RogueJedi86 Apr 25th 2009 6:25PM
I have a serious fear of deep water. Even getting to Fatigue Waters and not seeing bottom freaks me out. Add sea monsters(like Spore), and I'd drop a load and go cry in the corner. (Basically I'm saying it's a good idea.)
Saint Apr 25th 2009 11:20PM
Amun: GREAT IDEA. I love that. Not only for fishing boats, but to get rid of the so-so fatigue mechanic. Let's say I play a prot. warrior with 35k. I have enough "Stamina" to hold up to huge hits but can't swim past a certain point because of fatigue... which is a lack of stamina.. Huh?
RogueJedi: As a part-time sea monster I must say "RAWR!"

well turtle mount where you can fish on would be nice.
basicly i was expecting that but no
Korixa Apr 25th 2009 5:49PM
The Salty title will NEVER be commonplace until they remove the requirement to -WIN- the fishing tournament. At best, you will have one new person a week get it, and that puts us at a total of 52 a year, assuming that once you win you never try to win again - and we know that there are jerks who would keep winning just to keep 'lol, casual fishers' from getting their 'leet epic title'
Mattimus Apr 25th 2009 9:57PM
As someone who does not have Salty, and has no intention of ever participating in the STV tournament, I still think leaving Salty to STV winners isn't a bad thing.
It's just a title, and honestly, if the STV wasn't linked to it, or was made much easier to win, we'd be seeing far too many people paying to change their name to some variation of "Balls".
xavierlives Apr 25th 2009 5:53PM
Being able to cast from your turtle would be nice.
OIK2 Apr 25th 2009 7:07PM
Even if they add sparkle effect(like a lootable corpse) to your own bobber to make it stand out would be nice.

I'd like to see more integration of fishing in old Azeroth. More (maybe even just lightweight) quests dotted around the old hubs to encourage people to let their fishing skill grow with their character as they level, rather than it just be something people see as a destination profession - something they have to grind through in one sitting.
They're the people that are usually moaning about making it quicker to level.
Daniel Apr 25th 2009 8:27PM
I know it is a little off topic, but discussing Bags, it would be nice to have a bag that can be joined with two professions, like Jewelcrafting and Mining, Herbs and Enchants, LW and skinning. It would make MT slots be so much simpler.
THanks.

Frankly, I'm kind of annoyed they removed the fishing skill requirements for each zone. I've had awful luck with the gold coins from the fountain and want to keep at it, but now the fountain's clogged with Johnny-Come-Latelies levelling their fishing. I'm a Fishing Elitist and I don't care! I mean, none of this actually matters, but I'm kind of a bit disappointed that they've made fishing, which was so optional and somewhat masochistic to level up, easier: I liked being one of the weirdoes that actually bothered to fish when nobody did it.
I'm glad they put the Black Jelly recipe in: good mana regen from the stupid Borean Man O'War, and the Glassfin Minnow alchemy recipe is helpful too I guess.
My main's a shaman, so water walking means I'm not at all bothered about fishing boats.
Also nerf Pygmy Suckerfish. I liked them being rare and being able to sell them on. Now they come up on like three quarters of catches and just clog up my bags and aren't even worth the trouble of auctioning.

As a fellow veteran Fisherman, I will reccomend 'LootFilter' to you. Input whatever fish you don't want to loot from a cast and bam-it goes back into the water where it belongs!

The only thing that frustrates me about fishing -- and I like it enough to have finished all the achievements except that danged fishing contest (and I've been trying!) -- is that you don't get any better at actually casting within a pool the more skilled you get. I went out to do some real fishing with a friend -- having never fished before in my life -- and within maybe 30 minutes of practice I was able to cast within a 5-foot circle from 30 feet away. Can my character -- with thousands of fish caught -- do the same? Nope.
