I love Varian. I think the fact that he's acting in a very realistic manner and has reasonable issues with the Horde make him a very neat character. And don't get me wrong, I like the Horde a lot, they have very interesting characters. But I play Alliance and I can totally get behind Varian. My favorite race in the game is the Undead, but even I know better than to try and play it off like they aren't malicious and evil. The entire setup for the Forsaken is that they are aligned with the Horde, until it suits their best interests. Here's a bit of color from the WoWWiki page on the Forsaken:"The Forsaken made allies of the Horde out of necessity and convenience. They have no love for orcs, tauren or any other living creature, but they need time to strike against the Scourge and allies to help them do it. The Forsaken claim that they joined the Horde to prove their desire to leave their evil ways behind, but no one really believes this. The Horde accepts the Forsaken’s help, as they do indeed have a common enemy: the Scourge. The Horde is leery of the Forsaken’s tactics, however, and keeps watchful eyes on them. This caution is justified. "And that is what is running unchecked through the horde, alongside the Garrosh-types who harbor nothing but bloodlust for the human race. It's easy to get the motivation for Varian. If some invading force showed up and killed my father, then my uncle when I went to live with him, then ambushed me at a peace summit, then killed my best friend and my son's godfather? Anyone who labels that as "emo" needs a reality check. Varian is TOTALLY in the right to feel the way he does.

Ugh, Varian is not a good character. He is poorly written, a walking mass of fiction cliches. Everything about him screams Gary Stu. There is nothing subtle or original about him. Metzen and co. set out to create an Ant-Thrall, a "omg badass human", and did it in a cheap, unoriginal way. He's nothing compared to previous lore characters who were developed carefully in the RTS games. As for Garrosh, he's clearly being written purely as fodder for Varian. Before Wrath, he was an unsure Mag'har leader with no real connection to the Horde and absolutely no reason to be aggressive towards anyone but the Legion. Now he's all of a sudden an anti-human warmongerer, purely to give Varian excuses to keep being a dick.

Thrall's pretty typical, story-wise. So is Wrynn. Doesn't make Thrall's fake character any less respectable in comparison.
