Ugh, Varian is not a good character. He is poorly written, a walking mass of fiction cliches. Everything about him screams Gary Stu. There is nothing subtle or original about him. Metzen and co. set out to create an Ant-Thrall, a "omg badass human", and did it in a cheap, unoriginal way. He's nothing compared to previous lore characters who were developed carefully in the RTS games.

As for Garrosh, he's clearly being written purely as fodder for Varian. Before Wrath, he was an unsure Mag'har leader with no real connection to the Horde and absolutely no reason to be aggressive towards anyone but the Legion. Now he's all of a sudden an anti-human warmongerer, purely to give Varian excuses to keep being a dick.
