My wife is a paid-up WoW subscriber who hasn't logged on in close to three months. I'm sure she's not the only one.
You're not wrong about box sales not corresponding to actual players -- I own a copy of Guild Wars that's been gathering dust since about two months after release -- but let's not pretend that every paid-up WoW subscriber is a real player either, as opposed to someone who just doesn't look that closely at their credit card statements.
