Addon Spotlight: DagAssist
Addon Spotlight takes a look at the little bits of Lua and XML that make our interfaces special. From bar mods to unit frames and beyond, if it goes in your Addons folder, we'll cover it here.
I love it when people send in tips for cool addons. There was a time when I could subscribe to the RSS feed for an addon site and check out each new mod as it came out, but the scene is too big now; I'd be at it all day. Today we'll look at DagAssist, which was submitted by Rodney earlier this afternoon.
DagAssist puts a single, quite attractive button on your minimap that, when clicked, opens a pop-up menu containing things like:
- Teleports and portals, for mages
- Summons for warlocks
- Profession skills
- Hearthstone
You can see what it looks like for my warlock at right.
DA is sort of like a micro version of AutoBar, which I've been using for a long time on all my characters. It's missing a lot of AB's functionality - it doesn't give you access to quest items, nor food and other consumables, and it's not configurable. But it also takes up much less space, and it's a good 80% solution for me, in that it covers probably 80% of my AutoBar clicks, in less than 5% of the screen space. It also doesn't have AB's current nasty habit of leaving pop-open menus stuck open at awkward times.
If you're interested in something that gives you easy access to some of your more rarely-used skills, but you don't want to invest the screen real estate in something like AutoBar or Necrosis, give DagAssist a try. It's already found a place in my UI.

Interesting.
Really rely on autobar a lot but will give this a lookie lookie as well.
Thanks for the heads up.

Looks interesting, although I use Opie to similarly save hotkey space. Does DagAssist have Broker support?

I am a big OPIE fun as well, I think it is the most beautiful / creative / helpful addon to WOW. This one seems simple, however as a warlock, I use Necrosis instead (yeah, I love circular designed addons :).
It might be great for someone that all your spells are in one list (I personally never liked long lists), however Necrosis helps me what NOT to forget (spellstone, healthstone, soulstone are separate buttons, demons, spells, and mount separate also). This way I see what I forgot (soulstone is grey if not used, edged with purple when used and on cd, and purple when you can put it on).
I use OPIE for summon, separate ring for teleporting (put teleport: SHITF+X and up, teleport - down), and to have never-used spells still in available distance (like enslave demon, etc.)

Downloading OPie literally changed the way I play the game and also became the cornerstone of a total UI revamp.
One of the best addons ever.

I was also recently introduced to Opie and love it! Though looking at this little mod, if i seen that first i would def of jumped on it

How's the memory usage? It seems like half my extra action bars are taken up with the spells in your screenshot, so I'd be interested in trying this but my PC is prone to slowdown.

The AddOn is only 50kb and that includes a button graphic. Based on a quick look at the code, it seems to be well-coded and to use minimal resources.

What I need is an addon to manage all the buttons that every addon puts on my map as it is I don't have enough space around that tiny circle

Try ButtonHole:

I prefer Minimap Button Bag. It's ace coded

Eliah and Ichigo: thanks! I've been using minimap button frame, but I prefer something that's being actively updated. :)
Zerounit Apr 30th 2009 12:10AM
Actually I'm pretty sure Minimap Button Frame was updated not too long ago. Can't be sure but I think my Curse downloader picked up a new version.

Great, I've been using autobar, but not overly impressed with it, and also wanted a mini-map button add-on. The only one I could find was a Fubar plug-in, which I don't use. So this article has killed 2 birds with one stone for me.
Koskun Apr 29th 2009 6:57PM
BTW, this hasn't been updated in 4 months. Not saying it doesn't work still, but any future updates may not ever come.
Koskun Apr 29th 2009 7:10PM
Well, had a chance to run this on a couple of toons, and not really that impressed with it at all.
I picked up the aura's on the paladin, and Pick Lock on the rogue, but no poisons at all. Hunter it picked up the tracking, which Blizzard consolidated into the in-game tracking a while ago.
Also, no customization (no / command for it at all), and no auto-close that I saw, which could be annoying if you accidentally click it during a fight for instance. It gives you what it wants, not what you might want.
What with the customization that is possible with the bar mods out there (I currently use Macaroon, but remember that Domino's allows some), having clean and neat looking action bars is not that hard of an accomplishment.

It's not the same thing, but for this kind of stuff I use Geist.
MikeT Apr 29th 2009 7:24PM
This one of the first addons that I found indispensable as a Mage. I can open portals with ease. It has been updated as needed. For example, when the portal to Theramore was opened. Also when Shatt and Dalaran portals came online.
Ben Striegel Apr 29th 2009 7:33PM
Oh hey, yeah, I had totally forgotten that my warlock knew Sense Demons. Maybe one day that will actually be useful.
Dave Apr 29th 2009 7:33PM
Too bad this doesn't work as an LDB instead of a minimap module.
Anyone know of a similar thing for LDB instead?
Crööl Apr 29th 2009 7:53PM
I discovered this tiny addon a little over a month ago and love it. Really frees up a ton of space and screen real estate.
