Oh my god, who gives a shit? It's only a game. Some GM made a mistake sending him something and he did what anybody would do with it. It's stupid they banned him. He didn't use it to make money or crash the game. He has some achievements, whoopty-fucking-do. They should take it away, reset his achievements and have a little laugh. It isn't a big deal.

There's no way to know if one-shotting bosses contributes to server instability, because you're not supposed to be able to do it. There could be events in the boss encounters that are coded with the assumption that they will be allowed to trigger before the boss is downed, or after a certain minimum amount of time between events.
And that's assuming things are coded correctly to begin with -- there's design errors and there's bugs. This is the game company that brought us Corrupted Blood, after all...
Whether some GM accidentally (or intentionally) sent him the item or a glitch in the mail system gave him the wrong item, he was under an obligation to not use it. The Terms of Use state that you're not allowed to exploit bugs or defects in game mechanics. In fact:
"Those acts include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following: [...] (iii) Anything that Blizzard considers contrary to the 'essence' of the Game."
