It was right that he be punished for violating the game rules, BUT the penalty is way too heavy for the crime.
This is a game and I would assume that Blizzard would have the power to reverse the achievements/whatever other gains he and his guild members received while using the item.
There was a lot more room for him to exploit it for other gains, but he didn't do so. Blizzard has to take all of this into consideration before enacting such a harsh judgment.
