Noblegarden: Sexy or Sexist?

We are nearing the end of Noblegarden, but haven't discussed here at WoW Insider the most controversial part of the event: Shake your Bunny-Maker. For this achievement, you have to put bunny ears on one female of each race that is over Level 18.
Before we go any farther in this discussion, I would like to state that I am female. Not that I am speaking for all females (no one can), but I think that it is important that you know where I am coming from. I also have a young daughter and would like the world to be a better place for her, as all parents do. It is also worth noting that the title for this post was inspired by one of my favorite movies: This is Spinal Tap. The band wants to release an album called Smell the Glove with a cover of a naked woman who is leashed and is forced to smell a glove. The lead singer mistakes the word "sexist" for "sexy". Hilarity ensues.

The name and picture of that fictional album is undeniably sexist and degrading to women. But does that apply to the in-game actions of forcing bunny ears on appropriately "aged" females? Sutro at Feministing.com seems to think so (as do a few of our readers who wrote in about this topic). He calls this achievement "unconscionable", which is a pretty strong word.
Without a doubt, putting the ears only on female characters and having them be the equivalent of legal age to pose nude is a reference to Playboy. And Playboy, as most adults know, is a men's magazine with naked women inside AKA smut or porn. Many people believe that all porn objectifies and is otherwise demeaning to women, even if considered tasteful as many consider Playboy to be.
But while the female characters have no choice as to wearing the bunny ears, which Sutro says makes many female players feel uncomfortable in real life, they are not stripped down into a Playboy Bunny outfit or otherwise affected in any other way. So this really comes down to knowing what the reference is and being bothered by it.
On the one hand, anyone who doesn't know it's a Playboy reference, such as children, just think it's fun to put bunny ears on other players like they forced pumpkins on players' heads during Hallow's End. It is just bunny ears to them and is innocent fun. Other people enjoy the pop culture reference and also mean no harm when participating in the event.
Personally, I wish they had left the gender and level restrictions out of the achievement. Being "forced" to wear bunny ears doesn't bother me at all and I am having a good time in Noblegarden, but I don't think this was the smartest decision Blizzard has ever made. (Edited to add: I tried to present both sides of the topic here, but if you are interested in my full, unbridled opinion, I've expounded on my personal blog.)
| Yes, they should change the achievement to be any gender and level. | |
|---|---|
| Yes, the achievement should be removed. | |
| No, it's all in good fun. | |
| Not in this day and age. | |
| Bunnies are cute! |

Actually they do have a choice about the bunny ears.
It's called right clicking the buff icon.
SINisterWyvern May 1st 2009 1:09PM
Also, and I'm not sorry to say, there is absolutely nothing sexist about this.
Of course I imagine if it was male characters 18+ no one would care (despite the existence of the Playgirl magazine) and no one would get to cry Sexism! Yay for the double standard.
This is worse than the guy that called me racist for helping the customer that was there before him.
Aruhgulah May 1st 2009 1:29PM
^^ This -- right click the buff, and BOOM, no more bunny ears.
And I say this as a FEMALE DWARF, and a female player.
Eric May 1st 2009 1:22PM
Unless you are a female orc/dwarf.
Then your best bet is to log off :P
Yeng May 1st 2009 1:36PM
And best of all, when you click them off, you allow someone else to fulfill their achievement instead of having to wait 2 mins.
joerendous May 1st 2009 2:28PM
@Eric
haha funny you should mention that. around noon today there seemed to be only one female orc toon brave enough to go past the horde only section in dalaran. there were 4 alliance camping as she stood there presumably idle. i sat and watched as 3 of the allies tagged her with the ears and she sighed after each time. haha

I'm a female and I enjoy it (probably because I enjoy the female form and Playboy and get the joke)
Xerone May 1st 2009 1:09PM
I can see them changing it in the future, but I believe taking away both the level and gender requirements would make this achievement much easier than it is right now.
dan May 1st 2009 1:24PM
The level requirement was ADDED because they don't want people just rolling a new level 1 toon to get the achievement.
Xerone May 1st 2009 1:41PM
@dan
Yeah, I know. I don't think they should change it, but if they had to, at least change it to something that is similar in difficulty.
Nayeli May 1st 2009 1:48PM
Maybe you should suggest they choose another random level besides 18 then. Because if they added the level requirement JUST to make this achievement harder, 18 is clearly a really odd choice.
The pop culture reference is obvious but... to be honest, most of these bunny ears end up on male players anyway, since we all know that the people sitting behind the computer are 90% probably male. I am a girl and a female Belf, and throughout the week I haven't gotten 1 single bunny ear myself besides putting on that headpiece, while I've dealt out 20 sets of ears.
Yeng May 1st 2009 3:10PM
That's because the majority female horde population rolls Belfs or undead for whatever reason. Finding an female orc, tauren, or troll can be quite the exercise in futility. Same can be said for finding a female dwarf.
jfofla May 1st 2009 1:09PM
I love how "smut" was a link, but "porn" was not.
Arashikou May 1st 2009 2:24PM
Well, this is the internet, you know. They couldn't find anything relevant to link to.
Adaph May 1st 2009 3:07PM
^this. xD

JTD May 1st 2009 1:12PM
Really? This is what people worry about? Come on there is a swine flu epidemic in Borean Tundra...Orphan children running around in dangerous locales. Somebody please THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
Julie May 1st 2009 1:14PM
It's obviously a reference to playboy :) Which maybe makes you question the taste of people who work at Blizzard :p (*cough* horny males)
But as far as the event, so you're putting bunny ears on female characters? Would this really be a problem if the achievement instead was /kiss or /dance or /flirt with female character level 18+? Yeah, it's directed at women, maybe it should be "member of opposite gender". But I don't really see anything sexist, it's just light flirtation that happens all the time.
Nick May 1st 2009 1:09PM
isn't it sexist to refer to playboy as a "mens" magazine? Many female friends of mine, and I'm sure many woman the world round enjoy the female form.
Rhoe May 1st 2009 1:17PM
Trufax.
