WoW reference found in Wolverine game
X-Men Origins: Wolverine came out in theaters yesterday, to fairly dismal reviews, and like any good summer movie, it has a tie-in video game. Why are we talking about it here? Because the game contains a hidden nod to our own favorite digital pastime, WoW. I'll put specifics (and a screenshot) behind the cut, in case you don't want to be spoiled for the Wolverine game.
Apparently, in a hidden area of the game, there's not only Frostmourne encased in ice, but also a skeleton with a big gold "!" floating above him. Discovering this cave, at least on the Xbox 360 version of the game, unlocks an achievement called "WoW!", which reads "You feel cold as you examine the skeleton and read the name 'Arthas' etched into the nearby sword." Kotaku has some nice pictures of the cave. A cute reference, for sure.
And now I'm imagining a Wolverine Lich King. That's pretty terrifying. Thanks, guys.

im actually looking forward to this game, the movie was good, if you overlook a few points of inaccuracy...

"the movie was good"
Incorrect.
Ferarro May 2nd 2009 7:15PM
The movie was really good. Everyone who swears it's horrible is likely doing so just for the sake of doing so. You want bad movies this year? Hotel for Dogs. Push. He's Just Not That Into You. Fired Up. Dragonball Evolution. Hanna Montana: The Movie. And last year's "hit", Twilight? God-awful. Same with The Spirit. THOSE are dismal movies.
Origins: Wolverine was a solid B+ film, a notch below Dark Knight and Ironman, and far, far better than X3 and Spiderman 3.

X3 set the bar at... well, somewhere below sea-level. I personally prefer to pretend X3 never happened. That movie was never made. Ugh.
Origins in my opinion was below Iron Man, equal to Hulk (the new one) though.
Really good, with a few issues- in the old folk's bathroom when he's checking out his claws... bad work on the CG. Also, when it comes to the bullets shooting away his memory, that's some damn good shooting, considering Adamantium can't pierce Adamantium & he only shot out the memories of past experiences without knocking out his memory of how to speak/walk, or any other areas of his brain & by the time Scott (Cyclops) meets Professor Xavier, X is already in a wheelchair.

I think that about covers it- good, but you'd think they could find someone who can write a good script that also loves Marvel /shrug

The movie was good. Base your opinion upon seeing the movie, not what all the critics are telling you to think. Be original people, sheesh.

Haven't watched it yet, but movie 1 was good, 2 was okay, 3 sucked so bad that I hope they'll remake it.
I'm hoping they actually did a good job and redeemed 4th (even though it's a prequel.)

I'd like to say that's cool, but it's so-unsubtle it's kind of lame, at least to me.
I mean, an achievement for it? Really? What's the point in making it hidden then? Why not just put it in the middle of a level, and you have to see it to continue the game?

well, the game is published by activision, so using WoW assets isn't surprising. They just got themselves some free press, which they were no doubt counting on. If even a tiny percentage of wow players see this and say, hey thats cool, i'll check that game out, then its a massive win on activisions part.

"hey thats cool"
Anyways, it's enough to make me buy the game lol. I already love Wolverine, but I was worried that, like most movie games, it would suck... but meh, now I really want it, just 'cause it's that cool of them to actually place a 3D model of Frostmourne in there. (Plus, as I was watching the movie today, I was thinking to myself, "Wow, the order of events and the constant combat confrontations in this movie could really make for a great game." So maybe it isn't so bad.)
What's wrong with making it an achievement? Even if a player looked up the achievements before playing through (or finding the hidden area), I bet even some WoW players would miss the reference just from the text alone. And especially people who know about the game but don't play; most of them will dismiss the fact that the second "W" is in caps.
Just my thoughts... I liked the movie a lot, and I like WoW a lot, what can I say?

Wouldn't making it hidden warrant the achievement? Because it's a bigger achievement to explore and find this cave than it is to have it out in the open? Makes perfect sense to me. Now I'm just trying to figure out if you're just hating just to be a hater.

So, any thoughts that Wolverine's claws will be a Fist Weapon drop from Lich King when we get to kill/maim him?
SaintStryfe May 2nd 2009 4:43PM
and despite everything it'll still be a 1.5 speed with stats for a rogue.
Goddamn it blizz there's like two weapons total in Ulduar for ENH Shaman! They said there's equal loot in this one to all the raids in TBC. Well our choices sucked there too!
Cathaoir May 2nd 2009 5:03PM
No kidding. There are no weapons as of yet that are ideal for ele shaman in 10 man Ulduar. There is one caster mace, and it's better suited for healers, by far.

Meh, it's a nice touch for WoW fans who stumble across it. (assuming they aint read this ofc)
Film is crushingly average though.

Alright! A fellow Castle Crashers fan!

It's only appropriate considering WoW has a nod to Wolverine in WOTLK. There's a quest in Dragonblight where you have to kill a wolvar by the name of Loghun. He has 3 clawed weapons and is a flat-out nod to Ol' Man Logan--Wolverine. I smirked when I saw that. Good times. ^_^
FifthDream May 2nd 2009 6:17PM
Yeah, i was amused when i found him.

Subtle, isn't it?
