If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
I personally think he should have only received a 72 hour ban or something, just as a warning for him and everyone else who might use items that don't belong to them. I think its just both parties making innocent (I assume) mistakes which ended up being blown out of proportion.
Also for all we know the GM who gave him the item might have gotten into some trouble too.
