I think the most interesting thing about the whole scandal, is that Blizzard is doing everything they can to cover up what they have done here. They have pressured Wowhead to delete the item from thier database, along with the comments about it there, and I'm surprised they haven't "cleaned up" Wowinsider. I fully expect that within a week all articles regarding Martin Fury will be purged from this site at Blizzards request.
While Karate and some others certainly share some blame for what happened, clearly the BIGGEST blame should fall on Blizzard.
People have been using "Creative use of game mechanics" ever since WoW was introduced. People bug out the drakes on Malygos in order to have them through the whole fight for a 6 minute achievement. People used to BoP Razergore to bug out the razer fight. (I know, that was a while ago). People used Voidwalkers to tank Sarth 3D even though Blizzard said that was not the way the fight was intended to be done. These are all examples of completing things in the game, that you would not otherwise be able to complete.
It's easy to be very holier-than-thou and say YOU wouldn't have used it, but I think past history shows that a vast majority of players would have not only used it, but used it to a much greater degree.
Blizzard screwed up.
Blizzard got embarrassed by their screwup
Blizzard overreacted by blanket-banning an entire guild, most of which had nothing to do with the screwup
Blizzard tried to cover up their over-reaction by purging all references to it from every site that they have sway over.
