MMO Champion reveals shiny Algalon dagger
"Oh my god, it's full of stars!"
No, it's not 2001: A Space Odyssey (one of the best books and movies of, like, all time), it was our very own Elizabeth Harper when she saw this shiny new dagger, revealed thanks to MMO Champion. Now Algalon still hasn't been defeated, but doesn't this awesome, star-filled blade make you want to pwn his arse? Go on, admit it, even if it's purely on an RP-level.
Personally, as a boomer, I use staves exclusively but I want this weapon so badly. It has to be one of the nicest looking drops I've seen in a while - and the stats aren't too bad either. It manages to encapsulate everything about the Algalon encounter and the shiny graphics in one neat package.
In my experience, most loot has an awesome name or looks snazzy, but seldom lives up to its reputation. However, given the nice load of gear which has been tumbling out of Ulduar's 10 and 25 man encounters, it's nice to see some pieces which aren't just nice on a purely shiny level. These are drops like Voldrethar, Dark Blade of Oblivion, Wisdom's Hold, Shoulderpads of Dormant Energies and the Dark Edge of Depravity.

NOICE! But as a Rogue I feel that an awesome dagger like this should be available to us as well (being the #1 class to use daggers). Don't get me wrong lots 'o
The Artist formally known as Jesus May 3rd 2009 6:23PM
Well it is available for you to use, just not as effectively as a caster.

Too bad all the Hardcores that are quitting the game because Hard Modes are just a cheap mechanic, won't be able to strut with this.
wordsofivory May 3rd 2009 6:21PM
How is getting better gear from doing more challenging fights a "cheap mechanic"?
Getting a flying mount by making the fight more challenging is a cheap mechanic. Getting better *gear*by making the fights more challenging is not.
Now you just sound like another whiny casual complaining because he'll never get the gear. I can see Algalon practically feasting on your tears as we speak.
And this is coming from one of those dreaded "casuals"... one who actually believes that these sort of prizes in the game should be earned, not handed out, mind you.

If you read the posts over and over again hardcores had stated that Hard Modes were not real progression, but only a cheap mechanic.

"If you read the posts over and over again hardcores had stated that Hard Modes were not real progression, but only a cheap mechanic."
What is your point, exactly? Simply saying something doesn't make it a fact.
You do the more challenging fight, you get better gear. You don't do the more challenging fight, you don't get the better gear. There's nothing "cheap" about that mechanic at all.
It makes the content accessible for everyone whilst still letting the hardcore players get access to the best gear.

@jfofla
Actually as a member of a hardcore guild with black protodrakes, on the best PvE server in the world and also a member of the Ensidia and Inner Sanctum forums, the hardcore guilds actually don't mind 'Hard Mode' encounters as long as they are actually hard. Kungen (arguably one of the best tanks) even thinks that the 1 hour a week idea on Algalon is a good one (and most clever people agree).
The guilds complaining are the ones that think they are hardcore but simply, to themselves, are hardcore judged simply by how much time they raid.
Anyway rant off.
Gief Dagger to Me!
Awesome for a TtW/Fb Mage or any caster in need of Hit and a bucket load of Spell power.

I guess I have to make it simple so you can understand.
Blizzard's new policy is to make the normal mode of instances hard enough to challege casuals, but not shut them out. Blizzard has in turn provided Hardcore players with an alternative Hard Mode, that will allow Elite players to still be challenged, and provide an elite level of loot that only the Hardcores could access, like this dagger.
I have read many posts from Hardcore players rejecting this compromise. The opinion seems to be that they would rather quit the game than be placated by Hard Modes, which they see as a cheap mechanic, and not a measure of progression.
Since they are leaving the game instead of giving Hard Modes a chance, they will not be able to get weapons like this.
There, I said the same thing in my first post, but hopefully you could follow this one.

I think Hard Modes are one of the best ideas Blizzard's had since, well, ever. I won't deny that I'm a casual raider (Nor do I think "casual" is an insult), and hard modes solve the problem that vanilla WoW and BC had, which is that only the top tier guilds would ever be able to see the endgame content.
Hard modes allow the less hardcore of us to still see that fantastic content, while still providing a hefty challenge for those so inclined, and improved loot for them.
The hardcore players (Or, should I say, the elitists) can get their pants in a bunch all they want over how they aren't in a super secret club anymore, but at the end of the day we all pay the same amount of money every month, and I think it's reasonable to expect to be able to experience the best the game has to offer.

Thank you, you understand my point.
I in turn respect what you have to say.

I will crush and destroy everyt-.... Ooh! Shiny!
Palatel May 3rd 2009 6:16PM
As a Boom you use staves exclusively? I believe you are wrong. Any other doomkin use mh/oh?
Lesley Smith May 4th 2009 6:09AM
If you read that again you'll see I said I - as in me, as in me personally. I talking about my own play-style, not those of boomers in general.
Palatel May 4th 2009 10:33AM
I see. What do you see as the benefit to using a staff? I do not see how 'playstyle' is taken into account. Surely, you follow Damage->Haste->Crit, yes? Or is a deviation from the hierarchy of stats what you mean by 'play style'.
And by saying 'as a boomer', it kind of infers, to me at least, that you mean "Because I am a moonkin" not "Me personally as moonkin".

You could have cut out 90 minutes of 2001: ASO and still told the story without a loss of anything.

"You could have cut out 90 minutes of 2001: ASO and still told the story without a loss of anything."
"...and still told the story without a loss of anything."
"...the story..."
read the book/books for stories.
the sooner you stop watching movies (especially 2001!) for story the more joy will you get from the visual experience.
Kakistocracy May 3rd 2009 8:18PM
Ha, I bet you would have hated the car scene in the Russian film, Solyaris, arguably a better film than 2001 A Space Odyssey (though HAL does hold a place in history as far as movie "characters" go).

Sure, make the coolest design a dagger >.<
