read the book/books for stories.
the sooner you stop watching movies (especially 2001!) for story the more joy will you get from the visual experience.

Ha, I bet you would have hated the car scene in the Russian film, Solyaris, arguably a better film than 2001 A Space Odyssey (though HAL does hold a place in history as far as movie "characters" go).
