The end of vanilla WoW
We've heard about suggestions of vanilla servers before (and Blizzard has flatly stated that they have no plans for them), but here's a new twist: Nomnom on Korgath says that Blizzard should finally, once and for all, abandon the old world. He says that leveling from 1-60 is a pain, even with the changes and recruit-a-friend (and on that, I agree -- my Paladin is level 50 and staying there, because leveling is boring), and that Blizzard should just start all new characters at level 55, especially if you've already got a 70+ character. They already did it with Death Knights, and those have worked their way into the endgame just fine. That idea's definitely been batted around before, and anyone leveling an alt can definitely see the benefits. But think of what you're giving up with a new rule like that: Deadmines, Wailing Caverns, Scarlet Monastery. All of the epic quests and reputations, all of the great old-world vistas and settings. Plus, new players to the game will find the old world even emptier than it already is -- everyone who has a high level character will already be leveling through Outland or Northrend.
Do we really want to abandon the old world for good? Blizzard doesn't think so -- Palehoof unofficially suggests that Blizzard is happy with the subscription fees for the two weeks it takes you to level your character, and Bornakk officially says that Blizzard is happy with the way things work now, and if they see a problem, they'll fix it. You have to think that they'll eventually allow this kind of "powerleveling" in some way -- as we move closer to level 100, it'll just be silly bothering with the lower levels considering how far ahead the new content is. But for now, you'll have to stick to leveling the old-fashioned way, because vanilla WoW isn't going anywhere.

Leveling does kind of suck now. I've started a few alts here and there, but I usually only get to around level 7 or so when I realize I already have days invested in my main, and I don't want to start over. My alts usually don't go anywhere.

This.
I healed a heroic instance this week with a lvl 80mage who had attack power and mp5 gear. Tell me that's not a result of Blizz applying too many shortcuts for new players.
RAF should be limited to people who already have a lvl 60 characters too. Otherwise it's a factory of newbies.

Healed... 80 mage... wtf?
Remen May 5th 2009 10:29AM
@SJ
Jane was the healer and in her group was a mage with AP and MP5 Gear. She was not a healing mage :P

Exactly. Couldn't have said it better myself.
In addition to that, I see WoW in three parts: Leveling PvE, Endgame PvE, and PvP. When I get tired of one, I move to another, and cycle between them based on what I feel like doing a particular day. Removing the leveling PvE would remove a large chunk of the game for me. Leveling can be a boring grind at times, but you can always try things a new way. Rather than going from Elwynn to Redridge to Duskwood like every single other time, try a different order.
Blizz's addition of Heirloom gear reinforces the fact that leveling isn't going anywhere. It also takes some of the edge off of the grind.

What a horrible idea.
Half the people can't play their classes now, so you want to give them insta 80's?
If people are too lazy to level Alts they don't deserve them.

The same argument was made when Dk's were being offered at level 55.
In short, no matter how long they play a character, stupid will always find a way....

"The same argument was made when Dk's were being offered at level 55."
Yeah, and you know what? The vast majority of pugs I've lead since Wrath the DK ended up being the most utterly moronic waste of pixels in the group.
It has gotten to the point where I will actively avoid inviting a DK to a pug, and the times when I make an exception, the whole thing is proven again.
At least if somebody is forced to level from L1 they treat their game and their reputation with a bit of respect. When they can roll a L55 on a whim with an epic mount and full blue items, none of it means anything to them.

You guys do realize that in order to make a death knight, you had already needed a level 55? That mean to make one, it was required that you had already invested a lot of your life into the game. Honestly though, I wonder exactly how long people have to play in order to not be noobs in your eyes? A week played time? A month? 20 hours everyday? Nonstop? Some of you need lives.
Urza May 4th 2009 10:37PM
offday, you're missing an important part of the DK. The original idea for DK was to kill one of your characters and convert it to a DK.
Blizzard changed their mind during development and instead gave you a new toon that was killed and made into a DK. The level requirement/boost is there to reflect your DK's old life (guess you haven't made a DK or read any of the quest lines.)
jbodar May 4th 2009 11:30PM
Blizzard won't do this because that is the whole point of the Hero Class.
Let's not forget though, DKs were a new class with a new resource mechanic. Most people have played alongside the other classes for quite some time and have an idea of how they work, either through adventuring with them or fighting them in PVP. They are "familiar" with the mechanics of Rage, Mana, and Energy, if not intimately so.
Balius May 5th 2009 4:12AM
Far as I know, it was never the plan to "kill" a character to make a DK. That was just something people assumed was the case, and then spread as if it were the truth.
Nick May 4th 2009 8:10PM
as nice as it would be to start at level 55 with my recently created mage and planned warrior, I feel that letting DKs start at 55 is enough. I'd hate to miss out on doing some of my favourite instances ever (including raids) at the correct level. Stratholme at level 58-60 is a joy, and beats rampaging through it in 20 mins on my paladin. SFK around level 20 is always fun, especially as alliance, just because so few people do it. Scarlet Monestary is always a pleasure too.
I guess my ideal would be, start at level 20, do SFK, jump to level 35 (ish) do SM, jump to 58 and play from there. Unlikely, but I'd rather not miss out on my favourite instances.
Urza May 4th 2009 10:40PM
Could be an option though, level 1 or 55. The gear could be subquality to what you'd have if you actually leveled but good enough to get through the plaguelands into outlands.
profglitch May 4th 2009 8:12PM
yes, i would be JUST happy with that.
give the extra incentive to players to roll alts; it may solve class shortages at endgame, which is what really matters.
jed May 4th 2009 8:15PM
Endgame content isnt the only thing that matters... it is always about the journey.. and if you start players that high from the beginning they're not gonna know shit about how to play their class. And yes that goes for veterans of the game!
kugieB May 4th 2009 10:00PM
I think he was being sarcastic. =)

Any man who would trade the Scarlet Monastery for quicker leveling deserves neither.
