Encrypted Text: Tips for Rogues in 2v2
Every Wednesday, Chase Christian of Encrypted Text invites you to enter the world of shadows, as we explore the secrets and mechanics of the Rogue class. This week, we discuss some of the tricks and strategies behind Rogues in 2v2.An old friend approached me last week with the prospect of playing some 2v2 arena with his mage, who had recently hit level 80. Luckily his rolls are amazingly gifted, and he already had a pretty nice set of gear to play with. I equipped my Sinister Revenge and switched one of my dual specs to Mutilate, and that night we entered the arena to play as one of my favorite comps (behind Rogue+Rogue of course!).
Because of my high ratings in Season 5, we were instantly matched against 2000+ players in our very first games. While 2000 isn't quite 'Gladiator' status yet, we were definitely playing teams with some experience under their belts. I had a great time playing, as it was my first set of arena games since the end of Season 5. Mage & Rogue is a comp with some very potent synergy, and a fast-paced playstyle that brings out the best in our class.
When I first started Season 5, I was playing with a Holy Paladin partner. Our goal was to run the opposing team out of mana while using our defensive cooldowns to prolong a match. What a switch when playing Mage & Rogue! Most of our fights are over in 60 seconds or less, unless something has gone terribly wrong. This bursty style of play seems to favor quick damage over all else, but in reality it's not about the damage.
Crowd Control:
Rogues in 2v2 are defined completely by their ability to effectively crowd control one target for long periods of time. Between Sap, Gouge, Kidney Shot, and Blind, our CC capabilities are the best amongst any of the classes. The key to playing any successful Rogue combo is to coordinate CC with your partner, and to execute on those CC opportunities.
Against a traditional DPS and healer combo, there are two approaches to CC. One method is to CC the DPS class, which will allow you easy access to the healer without being "peeled" by the DPS. The alternative is to CC the healer, which gives you the ability to kill the DPS class before they are able to be healed. Which you choose to use depends greatly on the partner you are playing with, along with the enemy composition.
Trying to CC a Death Knight's healer and kill the DK is a mistake in most cases, as the DK will be able to use defensive cooldowns to survive your enslaught. However, if you are able to crowd control a Rogue's healer, they are typically able to be killed in just a few seconds of focus fire. Similarly, it may not be the best approach to try CC'ing a Druid if you have a Mage partner, as the Druid is immune to most of the Mage's CC and will be able to easily trinket out of your Blind (as they are also immune to our Sap in tree form). Knowing who is vulnerable to which of your CCs is a key ingredient in using your cooldowns wisely.
Tunnel Vision:
One symptom of a novice Rogue in the arena is the tendency to "tunnel vision" a particular target. This refers to the idea of focusing solely on the target you're DPS'ing, while ignoring your partner as well as your opponent's partner. This will cause you to lose opportunities to CC the enemy or assist your partner, as well as possibly forgetting to watch your own health meter. I suggest playing a few skirmish games for fun, and practicing simply watching the health, mana, and cast bars of both teams. Don't worry too much about your particular target, simply do your best to "watch the field" and see how you do.
Focus Macros:
A great way to get away from the idea of tunnel vision is to start making use of a few Focus macros. These take advantage of a new "target frame" of sorts. Basically, you choose your Focus target by selecting any NPC/player and typing /focus. This will bring up a new unit frame window for that NPC, which is similar to your target window. You can then write macros that will automatically cast spells on your Focus target, without ever needing to switch from your current target. Here's a sample formula:
/cast [target=focus] Blind
This will automatically Blind whoever is in your Focus target window. I find that Focusing the healer/caster of any given team is the most efficient, as they are typically the class you will find yourself Blinding or Kicking or anything else you choose to bind to a macro. By using these macros, you'll get yourself used to watching two targets at once, and observing the situation with a bird's eye view.
Clutch Plays:
The defining trait of any great Rogue is the ability to make a quick call and a great move with miraculous reaction times. Seeing a healer casting a spell, knowing that the healer's PvP trinket is on cooldown, and knowing that your partner is in a position to assist with a kill of the DPS, and using your Focus macro to Blind the target mid-cast: key plays like these are what set us apart. In order to truly excel in the arena, quick reaction times to CC and interrupt your opponents are vital. There was a time where the mark of Rogue excellence was "kicking a Fel Dom", which was simply a spell with a 0.5s cast time.
Watching your own abilities and actions are not enough in a PvP environment. If you're spending time looking for a button to click (which you shouldn't be) or worrying about which of your abilities are on cooldown, you're wasting time that could be used to monitor your opponents actions. This sort of "full court" observation is the most crucial skill to develop and exploit. Playing a lot of skirmishes and simply observing is a great way to learn these talents.

Rogues need help with 2's????
For real????

Just because you may be good at Arena, doesn't mean the rest of us are.
Some of us Rogues are terrible players in Arena (like me) and wouldn't mind a few tips every now and then.

Rogue mage should never lose to priest/rogue atm the amount of cc these 2 classes have together is very OP if they have half a brain to (sap if possible)poly>poly>poly>blind on the priest.
Teams in the 1500 brackets do this and faceroll their way across the ratings. If the priest trinkers any poly its instant blind -> game over for the rogue.
What classes can survive this comp pallies and dk's?

I disagree, I play Priest Rogue, I usually eat the sap, my rogue saps their rogue, and gets on their mage.
When both saps wear off, my rogue pops evasion, and I get sheeped. I trinket out, and PoM Shield, usually getting counterspelled after that, and resheeped, rogue vanishes to reset the fight. But with 2 DR of sheep on me.
If you use defensive cool downs well enough, you can easiliy take down Mage/Rogue.
And to your second question, Rogue/Priest and Druid/War do good against Pally/Dk. I'll probably get a lot of people to disagree with me.

The real question is what can a rogue do against a
Survival hunter with half a brain...
Disc priest/rogue vs resto Druid hunter.
Killing pet requires you to featblindsap so much and the hunter gets Insta revive... Gg

Hehehehe.....Trees are immune to Sap....sorry, that just made me laugh.

Playing rogue/mage takes very little skill on the part of the rogue. Getting a sap and blinding the right target is about it.
The mage getting a counterspell on the target he isnt focusing while dpsing is harder to do.
Playing this comp last season we targeted the DK first when he was paired with a holy pally. Getting sheeps and a counterspell usually meant the end. If the pally bubbles, both the rogue and mage just vanish. The rogue can keep the DK stunlocked/disarmed for much of what is a very short match (which makes his CDs irrelevant).
DK/Holy is definately the rogue/mage's match to lose. If unholy/holy survives past the first onslaught then they should easily win the match.

This was a great set of tips. Please write more articles like this!! Also, I'd have to agree with jL above. Being a rogue doesn't mean having a "WIN" button, especially when playing with varying classes (healer, caster/melee dps) is totally different for the rogue on all counts. I'm down for any and all rogue specific arena advice you want to give.
Thanks Chase!

Good set of tips, thanks Chase.
Ok here is my question, what poison do you use for your mut spec? Also if you did switch to combat what poison would you go with, I've seen a few people say wound on main, deadly on off hand?
Kryxx May 6th 2009 4:26PM
If you're combat, you should be using crippling poison.
Yup, I need Help May 6th 2009 4:33PM
So wound/cripple then, ok I can see that.
Lemons May 7th 2009 1:06AM
For mut PvP you pretty much just go dual WP.
The great thing about it is that even if a paladin spams cleanse there's no way he's ever going to get that wound poison off him as long as you're there stabbing him, plus WP does a tidy amount of armor-ignoring damage to the target as well, I think it's the main reason a rogue can even take down a plate-wearer.

I just quit my previous arena team (warlock/rogue) due to the shared DR for Fear and Blind, and started running the not-so-amazing setup of rogue/healadin.
Good gods. It's like playing two different classes. In double DPS you usually trinket the first dangerous CC thrown your way (e.g. 1-2 seconds in the enemy rogue's Cheap Shot) and immediately vanish CS him yourself while coordonating fast CC setups with your partner and calling out everything that happens on the playfield (a must, as I see it).
Rogue/Healadin is as boring a game as leveling through mob killing. Nothing really exciting happens. Oh, you think you're gonna burst that warrior? Whoops, Shield Wall. Burst next kidney? Whoops, Blessing of Sacrifice. Burst next one? Pally is bubble bombing Holy Lights. It's whoever gets the first untrinketable CC on the enemy healer (or DPS, depending on the situation) that decides the fight. Snore.
Give me a mage or give me death!

played rogue/mage season 5 and did terrible.
playing rogue/priest season 6 and doing much better.
Between the pally bubble + DK anti-magic they are VERY difficult to beat with rogue/mage. I think we beat one pair all season. And I explain that as either
a) they were noobs
b) lag
c) they were wearing greens
d) all of the above
But with rogue/priest its just fear/blind the DK and burn down the pally (mass dispell the bubble).
For poisons I run with WP/WP (with Deadly Brew to also apply cripple). WP does tons of damage, and has mortal strike effect. The lack of a DOT means I can blind/gouge w/o breaking my own CC. My PVP spec eschews Improved Poisons.
The other advantage of pairing with a priest over mage or 2nd rogue is the heal/shields. Since the battles last more than a few seconds you have time to recover from a mistake.
I was never good enough or fast enough to truly exploit the lightning play necessary to succeed with 2xDPS.
And finally IMO fear is better than poly.
You can apply damage to feared targets.
There are AoE fears.
Fear causes melee to run away giving my priest positional control.
And now for the note to rogues that made me post this in the first place:
Get good daggers!
You need two slow iLvl 200+ daggers for PVP mutilate spec to really work.
Here's a couple of easy places even non-raiders like me can get them:
1. Blacksmiths made Titansteel Shanker (or buy from the AH)
2. Argent Tourney (it's time to grind some badges)
Alliance - Dagger of the Rising Moon
Horde - Spinal Destoyer
What's the big deal about weapons?
Mutilate DPS is a function of how hard your daggers hit.
If you're all about maximizing your DP and energy regen with your librarian's paper cutters then that's fine for PVE but it doesn't cut it (ha ha) for PVP.
Get some hard hitting daggers and revel in your new found power.

"Trying to CC a Death Knight's healer and kill the DK is a mistake in most cases, as the DK will be able to use defensive cooldowns to survive your enslaught."
First off..."enslaught"? Secondly, I don't really know of another way of doing it. It really helps that most DKs are smacktards that rush to the other side of the arena leaving their healer in the dust, a quick sprint > sap puts the healer out of commission for a bit and me and my mage partner can usually blow up the DK. I try keep him tightly stunlocked to prevent any defensive CDs from being used making it a pretty easy kill.
I don't know if that would work at higher ratings, but it seems to works fine so far. Trying to kill a pillar humping healer with a DK constantly death gripping you and spamming chains of ice is just something I don't like dealing with.

Hey Chase, Can you recommend a good leveling guide for rogues 70 to 80?
