Two more WoW-related iPhone apps off the App Store
Blizzard has laid the legal smackdown on two more WoW-related iPhone apps. As Double Bubble reports, both Warcraft Chest and WoW Realm Status have bit the dust, most likely after Blizzard's legal department sent them a cease-and-desist (that's what recently happened to the popular Warcraft Characters app). We don't know for sure that Blizzard went after them, but considering that Warcraft Chest was completely free, there can't be that many other reasons why it's not on the App Store any more. It's still not clear yet either why Blizzard is doing this -- originally, since they started off going after only paid applications, it was plausible that they just didn't want other people profiting off of their game (similar to the new addon policy). But they've taken down both free and paid apps here so far, and Double Bubble also has a list of both free and paid addons still up. At this point, we have to wonder what Blizzard's real intentions are here -- they're squashing valuable resources that fans have made and are giving away for free. If they were planning an Armory or realm status app of their own, that's one thing, but the only reason we can see so far is that their legal department has decided to act against the company's own loyal fans for their own interests. Not a great strategy for encouraging customer loyalty.
And what about sites like Wowhead or the Firefox realm status addon? Why is Blizzard only targeting helpful applications on the iPhone? We can only guess that Blizzard will eventually go after the rest of the apps on the App Store, so if you're working on one or planning to release one soon, guess you might want to think again about how that time might be better spent.

Wow. Thankfully I've already got all those apps, AND disabled the iPhone killswitch so Apple can't kill those apps. Yay me!

Last I checked, WoWChest was no longer being offered for free. The updates are free if you aquired it back in the day but it was holding a $2.99 pricetag for new folks.

More apps are going down:
WoW Reputation Guide
World of Warcraft Gold Cheats
Both those has been reported to Apple and it's just a matter of days now.

Thanks Blizz, squashing fan-made projects which celebrate your creation is great PR!

I guess Android apps remain safe for now - not that they could be killed as easily because you can install from other places without rooting the phone.

Maybe some journalists somewhere should inquire of Blizzard what their reasons are.
Marc Sadowski May 6th 2009 4:48PM
Yeah, but where are we going to find one of those?
Candina@WH May 6th 2009 4:51PM
I think you'll find a few journalist in the unemployment line, at soup kitchens and in homeless shelters...

Linkstheshiz May 6th 2009 4:52PM
The kill switch is used for blacklisted apps only which there are none of yet so don't worry, I still have tris with no prob so far.

We all know Blizzard doesnt care about their customers, well only where the bottom dollar is concerned.

Just like coke or pepsi would "squash" an app using their branded products. It's allll about licensing.
steve May 6th 2009 5:00PM
The reason is because Blizzard realizes that they can make their own version of these apps and make the profit instead. They could hire a summer intern for 10.00/hr to make these apps, and they could charge a fee and make millions.

That's certainly how it looks.
I put my account on hold last month while I was finishing up school. Honestly, with this, the change in add-on policy last month, and the whole Karatechop thing, I'm not planning on reactivating any time soon. As a player and a developer, I don't agree with Blizz's recent actions at all.
Veras Gunn May 6th 2009 4:59PM
Actually Chest changed to a purchase application like right around when 3.1 came out, something like a 1.99, which the creator attributed to needing compensation for more frequent updates.

The more arsebiscuit Blizz are going to be, the more resentment they will generate. So be it.

Blizzard does no longer exist. They're Activision-Blizzard now, and Vivendi has made some very dubious decisions in regards to customer relations in the past.
They just want your money and are quite cocksure of their indestructible position at the top.
In case any of the old Blizzard staff care about any of this, I very much doubt they're even allowed to break the NDA's they surely had to sign to keep their jobs.

I bet that Blizz is going to come out with there own App. That is why the had the others removed.
