Blizzard cinematic team appears at Chapman University

Nick Markham is a student at Chapman University , and he recently dropped us a tip about something special that happened there. Chapman University is fairly close to Blizzard's Irvine headquarters, which could be why they were able to take the time to drop by. One of their film classes had a treat when six members of the Blizzard cinematic team came by to give a three hour presentation about what they do, how they do it, and other miscellaneous film-related issues. So what's the news?
The most crushing news is another confirmation that we shouldn't expect to ever see a gnome in an official World of Warcraft cinematic. The quote from Jeff Chamberlain, the director of the cinematic team, is "Not if I can help it!" Apparently, while gnomes are arguably one of the coolest races in WoW, the director doesn't feel that they're "epic" enough. I can see that viewpoint, I guess, but that just means we'll have to rely on Baron Soosdon to brings us the gnome love.
The Wrathgate animation, of course, was a significant topic. According to Nick's report, the cinematic team and Blizzard both consider Wrathgate to be a complete success. We should expect to see a new, similar animated event with each significant content patch, though it's going to take a little bit to get that going. As for machinima, the presenters said they are continually impressed by the work fan machinimators produce. There was even a time when they wanted to publish a tool to help machinima creators, but that was unfortunately unable to come to fruition. The idea had been to build something like a Map Editor, or even an official WoW Model Viewer, but since the project never completed, we may never know.
There were a few hints about the World of Warcraft movie, though not a lot of details since the cinematic team isn't directly involved with it. Metzen's writing it, and the movie will not be about Arthas. However, the panel confirmed that Legendary Pictures will do the CGI and special effects. That's not outside speculation we've seen already, but it's pretty nice to have confirmation.
Finally, apparently there are going to be openings on the cinematic team. What's more, the team will be showing off some kind of new animation at the upcoming BlizzCon. They'll also be there, and might be looking to meet members of the machinima community. Machinima creators might want to shine up their pixels, as it were, if they're looking for an audition with the team.
All in all, it sounds like the presentation was pretty neat. It was definitely worth the time, and it whets my appetite for what we might start hearing about upcoming BlizzCon news.
Edit: Changed "Anaheim" to "Irvine." I guess I'm too excited about BlizzCon!

I'm one of those gnome fans that's always been bewildered by the gnome hate. I don't play male-draenei because I don't like their animations and stuff, but I don't HATE them. Male trolls also irk me, but no "kill on sight" anymore than any other hordie would be.
(I do think that female trolls make the best vikining-esque battle women though!)
I mean, look at the Van Troier (spelling...) gnome commercial, it was fun. Sure they're not as dour as some, even though they've faced their fair share of adversity. (Dwarfs have had major issues, elves have had major issues, humans got kicked in the nuts a few times... So why is it the HORDE races that are so emo? :-p
I do like that for once in a fantasy setting, gnomes are their own history, rather than being descended from dwarves though. Was a fun questline and Fizzcranks really brought the titan-plots home for me. Otherwise it's a solid dwarfie thing.
Deadly. Off. Topic. May 8th 2009 10:45AM
Yeah, good old Jeff must have forgot about all the dragons that run around as gnomes... coughs Cromie coughs.

Haha, the less gnomes I see the better.
Glad to know Blizzard thinks likewise. ;)

They can't think of -any- possible way a gnome could be presented as "epic"? What a staggering lack of creativity on their part. *shakes head*

I think the fact the the art director decides to make a blanket statement about one of the 5 races that the Alliance plays has in WoW shocking. It is his responsibility to ensure that all races/classes/archetypes are properly given the nod and his blatant disregard by making a statement that is in no way fact appalling. "Not Epic enough?" Really.... Wow I guess you can tell that to my Gnome rogue who is topping the DPS charts and has something like 50k PVP kills. I don't understand the "Gnome Hate" however I suppose real people play this game and the idiots must remain idiots even in a fantasy world. The fact that a employee of Blizzard with some clout would have the audacity to shun Gnomes from all future cinematics on the basis of his lack of creativity is baffling. Learn to properly use your imagination or look at some people's Armory you lazy excuse making anti-art director. Its blind hatred and lack of understanding that makes this game, trade channel, and some forums a mockery. Way to lead by example Blizzard. I'll be sure to send you some money so you can not represent 80% of my character base.

Zach.... Please check out comment #35 before you start insulting people. I'd also like to point out that the author of the article wasn't even at the presentation he's writing about.

Then Melissa if you would be so kind to indulge me as to why Gnomes have been omitted from every cinematic that is produced by Blizzard.... Please I am looking for a good rationale of which there are none.
