Breakfast Topic: How far into the content are you?

While I was questing away in Icecrown, I had some guildies running Ulduar 25, others running Outland 5-mans, a few in Battlegrounds and a low level alt or two stuck in the old world. And this got me thinking, just how far are you, gentle readers, into WoW? Are you slow and steady, experiencing all it has to offer? Or are you downing Freya on your 6th level 80? Cast your vote below.
| On my first character leveling in the old world. | |
|---|---|
| Leveling through Outland. | |
| Leveling through Northrend. | |
| Running Heroics in Northrend. | |
| Running in 10-man raids in Northrend. | |
| Running in 25-man raids in Northrend. | |
| Working on an alt. | |
| Left the game, but still read the site! |
Clearly I can't cover every option in this simple poll, so if one of these choices doesn't explain your situation adequately, cast your vote by leaving a comment below.

Ulduar 10 cleared but 25 man up to Freya (as the only keeper)

Figuring Blizzard meant what they said about 10 and 25 raids being on different progression tiers my guild has gone through 10-man Naxx and has raided a lot into 25 through PuGs...and even in 1/2 25-gear we are having IMMENSE trouble in Ulduar 10.
So yeah, we're stuck in ulduar 10 even though according to Blizz we SHOULD be able to get through okay in 10-man naxx gear.

@ James
I'm feeling that. My guild has pretty much cleaned out Naxx 10 and strangely we're having trouble in Ulduar as well, despite all being kitted out in the 10 man gear Blizz suggested would be adequate. FL went down easy, but Razor, Ignis and XT are seriously putting the hurts on us.
We've yet to head back inside since the recent nerfs, and have ended up teaming up with a friend's guild in order to run Naxx 25 for a couple of weeks. Hopefully the gear from there will help give us a bit more of an edge and the nerfs allow more of an error margin when we go back.

@ James. We're in exactly the same boat! I've got a talented but casual, and small guild that's been clearing Naxx 10 for a while now, and Uld 10 is just ROUGH. We're trying desperately to get more Naxx-25 going just to get ahead of the gear curve.

Right now I've got a rogue starting out in Ulduar 25's whom I mostly only play for raids.
Recently been spending more time on my paladin, who had his first 10 naxx run a couple nights ago as a dps for the first half and offtank for the last part. I'm working on Northrend rep with him, finishing out quest zones, and grinding Sha'tari Skyguard rep on occasion, because I am seriously tired of his windrider and like the smaller mounts more than the drake sized ones. Enjoying the versatility of being a hybrid, especially since I've played a rogue for 2 years now.
Also have a hunter questing through STV, and a death knight still hanging out in the Thrallmar inn. I play them every once in a while when they have rest xp.

@James - The reason your guild is having trouble is because instances are supposed to be hard until you get a more then a couple of pieces of gear from the instance itself. Ulduar 10 isn't balanced around a group in Naxx 10 gear.. it's balanced around a mix of Ulduar/Naxx gear. So just keep knocking out the first couple bosses for a few weeks and wait til your raid's a bit more geared.
To answer the question, my guild's still working through 25 Ulduar. We finally downed Hodir for the first time last night, and are going back and hoping to down Freya and Thorim tonight.. we're getting so close to ol' Yoggy!
I myself am mostly spending time on my main working towards my own personal achievement.. 100 vanity pets. I'm at 96 so far, so just need a few more.

To respond to this:

Welcome to the way Ulduar is tuned. You're probably having just as much trouble with Ulduar 10 in 10-man gear as people are with Ulduar-25 in 25-man gear. Razorscale and Ignis kicked my guild's ass the first week. Go back with the nerfs, you'll fare better, but if you give up that easily I question whether it's deserved....
In short: Yes. It's supposed to be that hard.

Uld-25 cleared to General Vezax, who we're working on tonight. Got him to 10% last night, so should have him down within an hour or so - which leaves us a couple of days to work on Yogg.

Feeling left out. Been a raid tank for a couple of years but keep getting edged out of guild raids on my tank by lower geared tanks who 'need experience' or 'need gear' more than I do. So while I'm left to sit on the bench, or worse, OT their failures I get no gear because I didn't wake up and suddenly decide I was going to be a tank today so have been defense capped and have dps and tank gearsets.
I tried rolling as ret for a while but the other 'guild' tanks can't be bothered to gear up tanking heroics and the guild begged me to come back to tanking within a few days then doesn't half use me for raids and has decided now that they want to drag undergeared DPS through it with the short bus members of another guild who brings in their own failtanks that need gear and experience and further expect me to step aside but pick up the pieces when they fail.
PUGs are too painful for words and I've changed guilds a couple of times only to have similar experiences elsewhere when somebody's friend wakes up and decides they think tanking would be totally cool.
I've just given up on raiding and am leveling alts since my priest is geared into Ulduar and I refuse to waste her on guild runs now since they're still stuck on repeating arachnid quarter endlessly dragging fresh guildies in greens through it and thinking a 4 hour clear of the quarter with only 2 wipes is a success. /cry

Currently doing 10 man raids - but I'm not sure if I agree that doing 25 mans makes you further into the content, in my opinion it's a different way of experiencing it. Either way, I'm perfectly happy sticking to 10 mans!

I've got to agree with you there. Just because there are more people shouldn't mean it's automatically better. I've found some fights are harder on 10 man, because if you lose one person, it's a much bigger deal than some expendable DPS on a heroic raid. I usually heal, so I find 10 mans a lot more challenging compared to 25, where I've got 4-5 other healers cushioning me if I slip up.
On another note, my guild has been failing miserably at 25 man Ulduar [normally we fly through stuff] but have been having a bitt more luck on 10 man. I think it might just be that we're pretty close to just having enough people to fill the spots, so we end up taking everyone and anyone who's online. 10 man means we can be selective and take only the cream of the crop. Healing's definately making me sweat, though, as I consistently seem to be doing twice the healing of the next closest healer. >.

Please explain why you prefer 10-mans to 25-mans? It has been said on this site and by GC that there is a mistake in tuning of 10-man Naxx and it is actually harder than 25-man Naxx. Why would you prefer a raid that has lower ilevel, is harder, and will not prepare you as well for Ulduar?
Ed May 7th 2009 10:13AM
@Gothia: Interesting question - I prefer 10 man raids because, in my experience, everyone's been a lot closer in terms of friendship, communication is a lot easier, and there's more of an opportunity to have fun in general. It's sort of difficult to explain, but I just get a better vibe from doing 10 mans. I'm sure there are 25 man groups that are just as good, but as of yet I've not come across one as fun as my regular 10 man team!
ziggler May 7th 2009 11:39AM
what the above said. joking around in vent in 10man, really nice, doing the same in 25, well its chaos. And, people seem to focus more (i know i do) in 10's, as any mistake will be easily discovered

I'm very new to the game, been playing since mid March. My first character is nearing level 67, been in the Outlands for about a week now. Looking forward to Northrend!
Aedilhild May 7th 2009 8:57AM
You'll love Northrend. Just be sure to make Howling Fjord your first destination.

^^ What he said.
Leveling through HF was probably one of the most fun experiences I've had playing WoW. Not sure why, I just really like the zone.
Make sure you have the music on! :)
Graham May 7th 2009 9:54AM
I actually loved Borean Tundra though. If you want a taste of the "cold-harsh-wasteland" part of Northrend, go to Borean. If you're Alliance, the Fizzcrank Airstrip quests are not to be missed. (They are a HUGE improvement over the Toshley's Station quest, as far as gnome questing goes). And the Winterfin Retreat quests are just hilarious.
So...the poll. I am mainly still running Heroics, but I have been in (fairly successful) PuGs of 10 and 25 man dungeons, and I am geared enough to start those.
Friday_Knight May 7th 2009 10:45AM
Whether you do Borean Tundra or Howling Fjords first is really up to your discretion. My advice: Do both. Especially if you play a hybrid class, and double especially if you're dual-specced so you can get 2 whole sets of shiney new Northrend gear to get you started.
That'll leave you somewhere around level 73 and quite ready to hit Dragonblight next, arguably one of the most badass zones in the game.
