Disappointment with the patch 3.1 game world

The Argent Tournament feels lifeless. Completely and utterly lifeless. I say it all of the time, but patch 2.4 was my favorite patch of World of Warcraft thus far, no contest. Patch 2.4 brought me more joy than even the Wrath launch. Not only did it have content for absolutely every aspect of the game, but it also actually changed the world. Storylines progressed in an in-your-face way. Sure, patch 3.1 moved the Ulduar and Yogg-Saron story forward, but would you know it if you didn't read fansites or watch the patch 3.1 cinematic? What's different? What indicator is there that something new is happening in the Storm Peaks?
When the Sunwell Plateau war effort began, Shattrath very significantly changed. You arrived in the city and you knew something was going on. There was a crisis, and some of the prime forces of the world (at the time) had to come together to stop it. Sure, patch 2.4 and patch 3.1 came at different points in their respective expansions' development cycles, and that allows patch 2.4 to do more with the world than patch 3.1 would, but that doesn't excuse the lack of life in 3.1 at all.
The Horde and the Alliance have decided against joining the Ulduar war effort in any official capacity, but that certainly doesn't mean that nobody at all knows what's happening in Ulduar. The Kirin Tor is definitely interested in what's happening, yet Dalaran remains stagnant. Jaina Proudmoore has apparently taken a personal interest in the crisis, but you don't see her in Northrend. Once you enter Ulduar it's made very obvious that there are parties that care and they're pooling their resources to pull off the impossible, but there aren't even hints that anything is happening out in the world.
The Argent Tournament is a little better, but not much. You get a letter in the mail letting you know the event has started, but there's still very little happening outside of the daily quests. There are no event promoters, no recruiters, nobody really talking about what's going on. When you go to the Tournament, you get a distinct impression that there's some sort of festival going on, some celebration. There are banners and flags and all of the races are flying their colors in elaborate tents. It's exhilarating!

So this is a whole lot of complaining about brand new content without a lot of constructive suggestions, isn't it. Good news! I have some suggestions, too!
Ulduar
Like I said, the Ulduar war effort would be a pretty big deal, even if the Horde and the Alliance haven't officially thrown their lot in with Dalaran here. At the end of the day, just about every adventurer in Northrend retreats to Dalaran for some rest and would hear about something happening. The Horde and Alliance may not be interested in Ulduar, but the Kirin Tor definitely is. Problem is, Dalaran doesn't display that. You wouldn't know something is going on in Ulduar. So what would I do?
- The most obvious thing to do is use the Dalaran Magi that act as city guards to fill the role of the Commoners that crop up in capital cities such as Stormwind and Orgrimmar during world events. The Mages must talk about something, they're all standing in pairs! What are they talking about? Did someone's family member go into Ulduar? Are they getting ready to go to Ulduar?
- When you enter Ulduar itself, you see that they've pulled in a number of mercenary groups to bulk up their forces. Bring some of those mercenaries into Dalaran. Are they working out their contract with Kirin Tor officials? Are they being noisy, disruptive jerks in the various inns and bars?
- Put more activity directly outside of Ulduar. The righteous (and not so righteous) forces of Azeroth are mobilizing to stop Yogg-Saron. Set up some of the activity going on inside of the raid zone... outside. Battle-Mages rushing about, engineers repairing vehicles. Nothing of supreme importance, but Ulduar should not look pristine when there's a war going on. Anything to indicate that all Hell is about to break loose inside of that building would be good.
- Put Jaina in the Violet Citadel temporarily with relevant flavor text. Technically she's a part of the Alliance, but when has that stopped Jaina from doing what she thinks is right?
Lowering the number of generic Mage NPCs and replacing them with mercenaries waiting to have their contracts finalized would make a fair amount of sense, actually. Those missing Mages are off to war, and those mercs are waiting for Rhonin's pen to hit paper.

The Argent Tournament
Again, as mentioned earlier, the Argent Tournament may not be in full swing yet since the coliseum is still under construction, but that doesn't mean nothing should be happening there. That's just silly. So what would I do?
- Recruiters! The Argent Crusade wants to bring capable warriors from far and wide to compete at the Tournament and help them against the Scourge. They really oughta send out some feelers. A mass-mailing is such a copout! I'd love to see some Argent Tourney promoters out in the non-Dalaran capital cities. Obviously Dalaran knows it's happening, those guys are already in Northrend. Send a few guys to Stormwind, or Undercity, or Orgrimmar. For extra drama, send some Human Crusaders to Orgrimmar and some Forsaken or Orc Crusaders to Stormwind. Sweet, sweet animosity.
- This is the quietest construction site I've ever seen. Where are the explosions? The angry foreman? The random stone blocks falling off of scaffolding followed by a comedic 'oops'? So much wasted potential.
- The event needs star power. Are there any big names planning to take part in the tournament? There's a ton of opportunity here to pit some lore figures up against each other in a friendly (yet competitive) way. Tirion Fordring vs. Darion Mograine on horseback, anyone? Make these star power duels only happen every few hours, and you can even make a big show of it. NPCs would run to watch, and guess what? Players would, too. If this only happens a few times a day, people would go out of their way to watch, and they wouldn't mind their dailies being interrupted for a few minutes for it.
Conclusion
Patch 3.1 has lots of cool content, but it is utterly lifeless. In my opinion, Blizzard has set the bar for the story progressing within the game itself so high starting with patch 2.4 and through Wrath of the Lich King's initial release that they can't really afford to slip back into the days where the world was utterly stagnant. The game world needs to continue reflecting current events, and those current events need character. Without character, what is the Argent Tournament? Just another generic quest hub with yet more daily quests. Oh boy.
It's certainly a possibility that Blizzard had these ideas in mind and simply didn't have the time to implement them given the fact that patch 3.1 had already taken so long to produce, but it's still sad to see something with such potential fall so short (in my mind, at least.) I also understand that the teams working on this event were probably the same people working on updating things like Noblegarden, and there's only so much a team can do in a day (or even many days) so there's that to consider. Still, I can't help but feel a little love and care would have made this patch's new content incredibly immersing instead of just ho-hum.

I think dual spec has really helped me enjoy the game.
The AT is actually quite popular on my realm, and there are always 10+ duels in progress. Chillmaw groups form every 5 minutes. I'm just 4 days away from the Crusader title, and love the mounted combat.
Takes about 30 minutes to do all the AT dailies (minus the goblins), including the weapon dailies that send you far away. That's about 150g+ in 30 minutes. Can't beat that.
Erogroth May 7th 2009 1:30PM
I like your ideas. Its not that the content is bad, it just needs some atmosphere. I want to be more immersed in the world. It is the attention to detail that can make a huge difference in a game. For example when you go to Org after wrathgate the streets are filled with forsaken refugees and the shop owners are outside complaining about the marshal law. That is not necessary for the content but it gives a real feel of what is going on in the world around you.
Borderguard May 7th 2009 1:32PM
The lifeless thing is for sure true. Another reason i dislike the argent tournament is the dailies..... seriously who wants to do the same quests over and over and over. I dont understand why people like dalies....
Gryph667 May 7th 2009 1:59PM
Because some people don't like farming.
Before the introduction of dailies, you had a choice between farming and playing the ah game, or leveling an alt to quest for gold.
You don't like dailies, others do. Amazing, different people have different tastes. Someone call the NY Times.
Borderguard May 7th 2009 7:05PM
Whoa, i understand how it was before and how it is now... its just that neither is particularly fun.
Think about it:
farming sucks, you kill the same stuff over and over and over, its boring, repetitive etc.
dailies are slightly less boring, you kill the same stuff/do the same stuff over and over and over except this time there is a quest (the same on every day) attached to it.
please..... give me something FUN to do rather than a boring one, and a not quite as boring one. Thats what i should have said in my first post. I know that certain people like dailies, but i dont... and that my personal opinion. No one has to agree with me
Eskarel May 9th 2009 5:43AM
Basically, the benefit of Dailies is really rather simple. WoW players need gold, they need it for repairs, they need it to buy stuff on the AH, they don't need quite so much of it now in some ways(you don't really need a mammoth), they always have and they always will because Blizzard needs to pull gold out of the economy or else the whole thing will go pear shaped.
They also need faction reputations at least to some extent.
Dailies are fairly tedious a lot of the time, but when it comes to getting reputation and gold, they are, while not necessarily much more interesting than farming, a heck of a lot more efficient. You do a few dailies you get a few hundred gold, you get a few thousand rep, you're done in a couple of hours.
Compared to the old days of people trying to farm grey drops off the crusaders in EPL it's actually quite an improvement.
Yes it's still boring, but it's boring for a lot less time for a lot more reward(though personally I'd like to see more of a combination of reputations, dailies, instance runs, and the old grind so that players with different kind of schedules can all get rep).
Ozmodius May 7th 2009 1:32PM
I hear you 110% Alex. The only thing that keeps me coming to the Argent Tournament is the mounts, pets, and gold from dailies.
Once you do all of the story chain its a snooze.

You admit that it might not be fair to compare 2.4 to 3.1 so I looked up what was in patch 2.1 (I was still in Azeroth at the time, so it wasn't on my radar)
Skettis
Orgrila
Black Temple
Netherwing
Druid epic flight
A new raid, 3 more rep grinds and a great quest line for one class.
I think one difference might be raid attunement for BT. Any level 80 can go into Ulduar, so maybe it seems less special.
Looking at 2.x:
2.2 was nothing special (in-game voice chat)
2.3 was ZA and some leveling improvements
2.4 was all good
3.2 should bring a new dungeon and updates to the tournament. I don't know if 3.3 or 3.4 is Lich King.
I think the big difference between 2 and 3 is how fast we're burning through content.
Noraa May 7th 2009 1:49PM
Everything is an utter cakewalk except for Ulduar, and there are no world bosses.
Jon Do May 7th 2009 2:19PM
Wow.
I was there for 2.1. Now you've made 3.1 look even worse, IMO.
I *still* use my Skettis mount as my main mount - my favorite in the game. I ran two toons to exalted with the Skyguard.
My main became Queen of the Ogres. I liked the 'attunement' chain of 5-man bosses, and the quests were pretty fun.
I finally went back an completed Netherwing recently, after Wrath but before 3.1 (they have my wife's favorite mount). Nothing compares to the Booterang!
The 'gimmicks' of 2.1 were the flying bombing and additional use of an early form of phasing (changing form in the Netherwing area, Ogres changing to neutral and changing their 'death text') - which I personally prefer to the Wrath 'gimmick' of vehicles. And another nice 'gimmick' with the 2.1 quests your toon started getting compliments from factions as they moved up the honor ranks.
And I never even made it into BT, since I wasn't in a raiding guild at the time.
Myria May 7th 2009 1:33PM
The Tournament is, like most of Wrath, a pale shadow of what's come before.
Quel'danas it most certainly isn't.
Dreadheart May 7th 2009 7:06PM
Nicely put Myria, and I totally agree with you.
Pheraia May 7th 2009 1:37PM
Naxx is boring in WOTLK, it was fun back in the day and I kinda wish that blizz put Naxx in WOTLK only as a bonus and not as one of the main raids. I feel kinda cheated in general with the expansion so far. IMO WoW has kinda gone down hill and has diverged from lore a lot since the original developers left back before bc. And yes, this is QQ. But I'm an addict so I'll go and down the same bosses I did back in 1.9 over and over again and I'll continue to do the same in Ulduar.

Northrend has always seemed more dead to me than Outland, at least after the first week. In Outland, you entered the portal and immediately had a massively battle going on on the other side. You were flown all around the first zone in the first handful of quests, and got to see lots of lore tie-ins and meets lots of new factions.
Further, the Alliance and Horde were coming together to fight a common foe, and the demons really were everywhere throughout the game. The other neutral factions (like the wind traders) had a lot more character than the neutral factions in Wrath do (Hodir? cool, but I don't come away with a big lasting impression).
Essentially, Outland somehow gave the impression that everyone there had just arrived and was exploring, and that the success of the entire war against the demons was hanging on a thread. Shatt was *great,* whereas Dalaran is a little too peaceful and perfect - no sense of urgency at all.
The Northrend factions all give the impression of having been there forever, of fighting static, never ending wars. There are some exceptions, but the lich king also fails to be a unifying force. He shows up in all the dungeons you'll hit early on, which is pretty cool, but there is a mess of totally unrelated stuff (the blue dragon flight, the titans and the old god). It's cool, but seems random and disconnected. How is any of this related to Arthas? Burning Crusade held together as a unified story line to a much greater extent.
The big exception, for me, is Zul'Drak, which I feel does a good job of showing how a number of factions are dealing with the lich king and the undead plague (I'm thinking the Ebon Blade, the Argent Crusade, and the trolls themselves).
Hopefully 3.2 will bring more focus and greater urgency. Right now, from a story perspective, there's no real reason why my character wouldn't choose to just live it up in Dalaran until some real threat appears.
sephirah May 7th 2009 1:37PM
For me the boring part of the AT is the chivalry theme.
I play a warlock, I don't want to go around hitting enemies with a lance!
I think the Ebon Blade should organize something more evil themed...
nieboh May 7th 2009 1:49PM
With a mage for a main, it always feels a little odd agreeing with a warlock, but there it is. I agree. I started doing the AT dailies with my mage but after a while, I just couldn't go on with it. Why would my mage get on a horse and try to poke people with a long stick? Out of character much?
I'll probably start up again with my pally, at least that makes sense and feels right. With my mage it's a farce.
I wish there were more class specific events/activities in the game. This homogenization theme they've been running lately is making everything flat and boring. SSDD is blah.
Jay in Oregon May 7th 2009 2:05PM
"I think the Ebon Blade should organize something more evil themed..."
I was hoping that since the Ebon Blade and Argent Crusade have pavilions very similar to the racial factions that we might get the chance to Champion them after we get through our home factions.
We could have had "Argent Champion of the Horde/Alliance" or "Ebon Champion of the Horde/Alliance".
Fain-Thunderhorn May 7th 2009 1:50PM
Some of the fights in Ulduar are absolutely a blast. Some are not so fun. I hate Flame Leviathan for one, I'm just not a big fan of vehicles and don't like being forced to use them (I hate Malygos too).
Mimiron however is an amazing fight and one of my favourite in WoW yet. Freya is a blast, as is Hodir. I also enjoy Razorscale but it's not on the level of those other fights. Deconstructor is fun too even though it's easy I just love seeing the massive dps on the chart thanks to the heart.
I'm not too much a fan of Thorim, Ignis, or Kologarn. I haven't seen Yogg yet but have seen some of General and it seems like an average fight.
I do agree though that it feels like the Argent Tournament is not even happening. I had no idea it was until I saw some guildies talking about it a week after it began. I've been busy and didn't have time to read full patch notes etc.
Same goes for Ulduar, there should be much more in game excitement about this stuff outside of the Raid. There should be NPCs everywhere going crazy over it.
Just my two cents.
discokill May 7th 2009 1:45PM
I must admit I have to agree. I was so excited at first reading about 3.1 (I can have a tank off-spec! new raid!) but somewhere along the line it just stopped being fun for me.
Maybe it's just because its getting warmer and so my desire to play has just gone away. Uldar was fun at first but it was too insanely hard for my mid-level guild at start and after a couple of days of endless wipes I realized I just wasnt having fun. I spent a few hours camping a spot for Eggs, trying to figure out why I was doing it. School of Hard Knocks could be doable but just looking at it I decided it just wasnt worth the frustration. And for some reason I'm finding the Argent dailies so much more repetitive than I did the 2.4 ones. Plus it seems like everything is so much more buggy than it used to be.
Maybe this is a qq post. I'm not cancelling my account and sure I'll be back some daybut the other day I cleaned out my bank and just put all my extras on the AH. After several years on playing wow, I'm just finding it repetitive.
Tyrsenus May 7th 2009 1:45PM
I whole-heartedly agree that the momentum in WoW has come to a stand-still.
Yogg-Saron is hardly a menacing foe. There's a few Northrend quests that mention him, and before 3.1 is only mentioned twice in name by Loken and Ursoc. He wasn't put in the forefront of players' minds throughout Northrend; an afterthought. What would happen if he escaped from his prison? Is he really interested in coming after the Horde and Alliance, or does he have bigger fish to fry?
One alliance quest in particular hints at hostility between the Lich King and Yogg-Saron, which would have been a powerful conflict to introduce and added a lot of depth to the story. Unfortunately, all we got was a vague dialogue in Yogg's vision.
Additionally, I was hoping that the "Black Knight" at the tournament would be a character of significance... but was instead a simple, nameless pawn of the Lich King. And what about Mal'Ganis? Is the Burning Crusade still seeking retribution for the Lich King's betrayal?
The overarching problem here is that story lines are isolated, and when the end of one is reached, players have to "switch tracks" to another, making it seem like there's no true direction or flow to the game. Ulduar seems like just an obstacle on the way to Icecrown. Simply content to we have "get out of the way," the Zul'Aman of Wrath of the Lich King.
