The Queue: Left 4 Cheesehead
Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Alex Ziebart will be your host today.
I was horrified to find endless amounts of Wisconsin hate in the comments of yesterday's edition of The Queue. Come on, Wisconsin rules! Well, no, the few bubbles of real civilization in Wisconsin rule. Milwaukee, Madison, and maybe (maybe) the Green Bay area. Everything in between those points are like something out of a horror movie. In transit from Milwaukee to Madison, all of the passengers in the car keep their eyes squeezed shut while the driver breaks out in a cold sweat. Packers fans fling themselves at your vehicle like the undead, crying out for your blood and pounding their fists on your windows. The only thing that you can do, the only thing you want to do, is keep driving.
Milwaukee, though? Totally rules.
aw232 asked...
"I'm starting to think that there won't be a raid included in 3.2. I've heard about a new battleground, an expansion of the argent tournament but nothing about a new raid. Is there any confirmation or denial on if there will be a new raid before Icecrown?"
Well, they said that there will be one in patch 3.2 back in last year's BlizzCon. Does that still mean that there will be one? Not necessarily, but I think that there will be. When it was mentioned, it was stressed that what it is will be a bit of a mystery. I think we haven't heard much about it because they want to keep that air of mystery.
JLocke asked...
"Somebody called me?"
No. Begone!
Farstrider asked...
"Does anyone think it's feasible to apply the stat adjusting mechanic that the heirloom items have to legendary items? Maybe give them some more use since they are... well, legendary."
I don't think Blizzard would do this, even if I personally think it would be cool. They've made it pretty clear over the years that they want Legendaries to be replaced eventually. They're exceptionally good weapons for whatever stretch of the game you get them, but they shouldn't last you forever. It's largely because this is an MMO. You always need bigger and better goals to keep you moving forward in the game. If Legendaries scaled, you'd find yourself in a spot of "I can never upgrade my weapon ever again."
We, as players, might think that Legendaries should last forever. From a game design standpoint, it's just not a good move. So I don't think we'll see scaling oranges.

Three questions? Really? I think we could have waited a bit then posted some more.
Alex Ziebart May 8th 2009 4:08PM
As a daily column, no, not really. Cry less, ask more. ;)
wildwinds May 8th 2009 4:08PM
Not even three. The second one doesnt count. So two questions.
Robert M May 8th 2009 4:19PM
How about you submit some questions worth answering then?
I have one, more for discussion, but a question none the less. There was a recent post about the lackluster feel of the current patch. I do agree, but only because it seems to contradict the design philosophy.
When we first step foot in Northrend, it feels like there is a battle going on. I remember seeing on here that Blizzard wanted the game to feel epic when you stepped foot in Northrend.
Why in the world, with some shoddy tents set up and a cathedral of light being built in Icecrown, does Arthas at least not attack the damn place? It seems relatively safe for being is such in important area.

Yes, Robert, but that might actually require...you know...thinking. Heaven forbid that such a rabid (and vapid) WoW player as schmunkel98 actually uses that thing between the ears for more than calculating DPS and aggro!

I guess that's why he talked about Wisconsin for like 3 paragraphs?
Umrtvovacz May 8th 2009 4:38PM
Robert, I am sure Arthas does not attack the place because he is cooking something bigger... Okey I do not think it :-D It just feels stupid... I have no explanation on why he doesnt attack all those recruits of light when they are still weak and slow and so. And when you see how much Scourge just uselessly wanders around, one would say he should make soma small army and ruin the place... No, he doesn't.

@Robert M: Well, I can think of two reasons:
1) The mages of Dalaran brought a whole city just close to this base. It probably worked as a diversion, much like the Aragorn and Gondor and Horan attack the front door of Mordor to get Sauron's attention.
2) The Lich King can raise the death to bolster his ranks. If he took a whole group at once, the attackers would probably bring stronger and stronger armies, to the point he would be overwhelmed. By taking them by the small numbers, he could built a vast army that not even the (impossible) alliance between the alliance and the horde would be able to contain.

is it likely that now since they have put level restrictions of enchants(yet those enchants remain on the gear) that they might lift the i level requirements for enchants and change it to just player level? it would seem a natural progression and my 63 arms warrior would love to have mongoose on his arcanite reaper heirloom.

If legendary weapons scaled, everyone would be pillaging MC and BWL for Thunderfuries and Sulfurases.
Farstrider May 8th 2009 8:33PM
I do think it would cause people to revisit those dungeons but I don't think that you would actually see that many people running around with them.
Please keep in mind, I don't think the legendary items should be the absolute best-in-slot item but I think it should last you into the first raids. So for instance, I think Thunderfury should last into 25-man Naxx. After that you should start to see items that are better.
I don't think however that there should be an expiration date on them. I feel that the items are in fact legendary so make them *actually* legendary.
I would love Blizzard to release some numbers on actual legendary items that are in game. I don't think there are nearly as many players running around with Thunderfury for instance once you compare them to the overall population of the game.

Alex Ziebart May 8th 2009 4:11PM
Yep!
elstor May 8th 2009 4:27PM
No. Never. In fact, you just got banned from WoW for asking that question in the comments. How do you like dem apples?
Agony May 8th 2009 4:35PM
Elstor, you get to join Matazuma...you ended your statement with a question.
In the comments section.
Bad. Very bad.

i think scaled legendary items would be cool. just make them only scale only one expansion forward... so the BC legendary swords would still be good in wrath, and the wrath hammer would be good through emerald dream (or whatever it's called).
legendary with an expiry date.
CursedSeishi May 8th 2009 4:28PM
Or the scale itself tapers off.
Through one expansion? Sure the legendary will be good for the first few raids, might even last up to the very last thrust. Next expansion? Eh... its starting to show its age, and next thing ya know, its replaced with a mid-level dungeon blue.
So lets take Sulfuron's hammer, it last to about Black Temple, and partway into sunwell. Now its not the best, but it makes the weapons there, on the lower end at least, side-grades and not real upgrades.
You hit Northrend though, and that axe from the anguish tournament in Zul'drak is a clear upgrade. And if you hit 80 still using it, well, its about a high-powered green to low heroic blue.
