I think Family Guy illustrated it best when they returned from cancelation and listed every show that had premiered and got canceled in the 2-3 years since FG was canceled. They ended up listing some 20-30 shows in just that 2-3 year period. That is very extreme.

And for the record, Firefly was still very damn good, love it.
