Secrets of the Tuskarr: The Cheena Vala
I have to say, I still have a pretty soft spot for the Tuskarr. They're sort of minor players in Northrend, overall. You help them kidnap some kids and fight off some vikings, grab a penguin pet and a fishing pole, and you're done, and on to bigger and better things in other zones. They don't even merit art for their females. Still, they're always pretty jovial, they look like big fat and happy dudes, and they got turtle boats. It's difficult not to like them.
One of the things they did is spur me to finally get a character maxed out fishing. I was always sort of planning to, one of these days, seriously, but it took the Tuskarr to push me over the edge, just because they made it so chill and awesome. Ok, so the epic fishing pole probably had something to do with it too, but still.
The fishing pole isn't the only thing they use to fish though. You've probably noticed those suspended fishing nets dotted around the coastline near their villages. They're a nice little touch of ambiance and setting. Here's the cool thing though: They're taken directly from real life. Tipster Jason pointed this out to us a while ago. Apparently, you can find these exact same nets at Fort Kochi, in India.
They're called the Cheena Vala, or Chinese fishing nets. You can see pictures and video of them in action at this link. Wikipedia also has some nice information and history on them, including some interesting theories as to the origins of the nets, which, according to local lore, were installed somewhere between 1350 and 1450.
It's not anything that has a massive impact on how we play the game, but with all the pop culture references Blizzard sticks in for us, it's sort of cool to see a few random history lessons too. As a Tuskarr fan and a History buff, I approve.

Neat, I love it when Blizzard does these kinds of things, which they seem to have done quite a bit in Northrend with all the different types of architecture of many of the buildings.

Tuskarr would be an extremely neato race to play...lots of interesting architecture and quest zones could be implemented.
Anywho, I dig the race too...I hope they go further.

I agree with this. I would totally roll a huge walrus with tattooed tusks. Seriously, I would. Are you listening Blizzard?
Charlie May 11th 2009 5:35AM
Agreed, but tuskarr are pacificsts by nature. The only reason they are getting involved in the whole arthas thing is because they have no other choice. (There's a quest where a giant lurker tells them too, or else they'll be wiped out).
So yeah, while it would be awsome, it won't happen. Same thing w/ Pandaren.
Though It would be a sweet way to balance it out. Tuskarr on Ally and Pandaren on Horde. heh.

I'd like to play a Tuskarr.
But If Blizz ever made the Vrykul playable... man. I'd be rerolling with my eyes closed. Those dudes look way too awesome to be forgotten after this expansion is over.
AND they have female models.

I hate the tuskarr. I steal a million wolvar puppies for them and they won't even let me keep just one as my own pet.

I love the Tuskarr, apart from the kidnapping. Fishing has been one of my favourite activities in this game. But I still can't get a pet fish!
Thrax May 11th 2009 1:19AM
A goldfish bowl on wheels would be sweet, and fun to play fetch with too !!

"I love the Tuskarr, apart from the kidnapping"
I wouldn't really call it kidnapping, but more preserving a race, and children, so that they aren't killing whilst they're having fights between each other. If the Tuskaar were any less of a race, they'd just leave the pups and care whether or not they lived.
All I can say is read the quest text, "The Snowfall Glade wolvar have as much right to exist as do we. You and I will see to it that they get that chance". Does that sound like the ruthless kidnappers you sort of had in your mind?
Locked May 11th 2009 4:38AM
Mmm, might want to check out the history of the Stolen Generation in Australia.
Had the same mindset at heart, and look how that turned out.
In case it isn't clear, I too, am not a fan of the kidnapping quests...
AishaLove May 10th 2009 8:50PM
for me the tuskar were a big let down, I like many others were under the impression we could play them.
Prudelas May 10th 2009 10:29PM
I never heard anything about that
Gnosh May 10th 2009 10:38PM
L2spot an unfounded random-ass rumor
Before BC came out, basically *every* known race was "announced" playable by rumor mills, before blizz actually announced the Draenei (and what a ret-conning cop-out THAT was).

"Who is this that speaks?"
The kidnap daily NPC is my favourite piece of voice acting in the whole game, I think.
mac May 11th 2009 9:43AM
That line is said by other Tuskarr dudes as well, not only the save the puppies guy, but ye the Tuskarr voices are awesome.
Amaxe May 11th 2009 1:12PM
Personally, I think the Tuskarr are just in need of some more bait for their fishing...
Raze May 11th 2009 2:10AM
I don't much care for pedophiles that hand out demonic penguins.
That being said, it'd take a lot of work in the animation department to get them up to snuff with the PC races. They've only got a handful of animations available to them from what I've gleaned from being transformed into one.
Alia May 11th 2009 2:49AM
No no no - Pengu is not demonic. He is the cutest pet in the game, always satisfied and happy. The red eyes are probably from staring to long at the sunlight reflecting in the water - he does a lost of staring and feather fluffing while I fish :-)
BTW I don't think tha Kaluak are pedophiles - I think they eat the wolvar babies. You don't get that fat from eating only fish!
Maire May 11th 2009 2:45AM
I wish the tuskars had their own tabard :) And that they would inlcude them in more parts of them game. They are so cosy and totally rocks.
Kittens May 11th 2009 5:15AM
Me too. A tabard would be awesome! And maybe some more fishing related rewards, like a net instead of a pole to catch fish, or an piece of gear that lets you walk on water.
And I would like to see some Tuskarr girls!
