Ask a Lore Nerd: Holy Warriors

Welcome to Ask a Lore Nerd, where each week blogger and columnist Alex Ziebart answers your questions about the lore and history of the World of Warcraft. Ask your questions in the comments section below, and we'll try to answer it in a future edition.

Like the Orcs, they've made Azeroth their home. Their original homeworld is prime Legion territory right now, and they can't go back there. Outland is in shambles for the moment. We purged the darkness of Outland (mostly) but it's still a mess. Azeroth is home to the foretold Army of the Light. The Draenei want to stick around. They like the place, and it's probably their best chance at a new beginning... and defeating the Legion. They want to stay close to other Light-following people. When your biggest enemy is the Burning Legion, why wouldn't you?
outlier asked...
"I read the WoW book "Tides of Darkness" where the Horde first began to invade the eastern kingdoms and the book went into the Alliance's creation of Paladins. Basically, they were originally Priests who learned to fight more like a Warrior while retaining their faith. This to me seemed like a logical conclusion since in times of battle, it helps to be able to physically defend yourself. My question is, why have night elves, trolls and undead not come to this same logical conclusion? I mean, each of these 3 races already are aligned with a race who knows how to transition from Priest to Paladin (blood elves for the horde and various races for the alliance), why hasn't someone told them how to do it?"
On a large scale, taking an overhead look of the entire race, Trolls, Night Elves, and to a much lesser extent the Forsaken, may not have the capacity to become Paladins, or even the interest in it. Remember, Night Elves and Trolls have Priests, but they do not follow the same faith that the current living Paladins do. Night Elves draw their power from Elune, not the Light. Can Elune have Paladins? Would a Paladin of Elune have the same capabilities, or would they be different? The same goes for Trolls. They're more like friendly Witch Doctors. The abilities all have the same names for ease of use in-game, but Blizzard has made it clear that they do not all share the same faith.
In the case of Night Elves, their Paladin equivalent would probably be the Priestess of the Moon, which is the class role Tyrande filled in Warcraft III, and their capabilities are elaborated upon in the War of the Ancients trilogy. They wear plate over their cloth, much like Paladins. However, there are some huge differences. They draw their power from the Moon, not the Light. They, like most warriors in Night Elf culture, prefer to attack from range, using bows and arrows. The class 'progression' exists in other cultures, it just doesn't necessarily sync up with Priest to Paladin.
Taking a closer look at the races, taking individual cases into account, sure, there could definitely be Paladins of those races. One point Blizzard has made about the Light is that it doesn't discriminate based on race. Even the little bit about the Forsaken being burnt to a crisp by the Light due to their undead nature has been lifted over the last few years. The Light does not at all discriminate. Night Elves and Trolls can worship the Light rather than their native gods and goddesses if they want, but will that happen? Not very often. The Forsaken can continue to worship the Light as they did in life, but most of them have turned primarily to the Shadow aspects of the Light. Paladins absolutely can exist in this races, but they are going to be incredibly rare.
If you want to see Paladins of unusual races, just hang out with the Argent Crusade. Most of the Argent Crusade is Humans, but there are Trolls and Night Elves scattered about that are wearing plate armor and have mana bars. They're not specifically stated as being Paladins, but it's a safe assumption. Paladinhood aside, there are still examples of some of these races following the Light, so it's possible. Zabra Hexx, who was a character in the Ashbringer comic, is a Darkspear Troll that found the Light. Chancellor Velora is the subject of a TCG card and as an Undead Priestess, her flavor text says: "The Light rewards faith, not form."
It's absolutely possible that these races can have Paladins. However, you wouldn't see one every day, and that's why they aren't playable. The playable classes are the aspects of the races that you would encounter every single day walking through town.
Supernaut asked...
"Why can't Forsaken be of any race (and therefore of any class)?"
This is a one part lore, one part game mechanics answer. As far as lore goes, most of the Undead are humans, citizens of Lordaeron. There are other races that've been risen, but they're few and far between compared to the Humans since it was Lordaeron that was struck by the Scourge, not Orgrimmar or Ironforge or whatever. Classes are always based on what you're most likely to see in a specific race. It's the same for the Forsaken models.
Now, game mechanics. It would be really cool to have a Tauren Forsaken, but is it a Tauren of a Forsaken? What racials does it have? Could you, at a glance, tell whether that character off in the distance is a Forsaken or a Tauren? Even worse, what if it's a Dwarf? Could an Alliance player tell that that's a Forsaken Dwarf off in the distance and not a Dwarf Dwarf? Would they be able to easily tell the difference if one ran up behind them in PvP? Those are all problems in a game like this, the races need a distinct look. The Forsaken have one consistent appearance all of their own, and mixing that up any further makes them more difficult to recognize, which isn't a good thing at all in a game like WoW.
Torumin asked...
"The future expansions will involve the Emerald Dream and/or the Maelstrom, but what races/classes are likely going to be implemented. Goblins for Horde? Furbolgs for Alliance? Demon Hunters? I'd just like to hear your thoughts on this."
If you want my personal, honest thoughts on the matter, I don't think we'll see any new races or classes in the next expansion. Even if it turns out to not be the Maelstrom, my answer is the same. I'll be very pleased if Blizzard proves me wrong, but I don't think we're going to see any at all.

"Why can't Forsaken be of any race (and therefore of any class)?"
I wondered that as well from time to time. Good question, and Good answer too, Alex.

I've kinda thought that the other races do have forsaken. Isnt a Tauren DK kind of a Forsaken? Perhaps not in ethos, but in the freed former minion of the scourge sense.
I always figured that Forsaken was a state of mind, man. :-P so you could have forsaken Tauren DK, if your Tauren DK happened to particularly hate the living.
Suzaku May 11th 2009 10:22PM
Like he answered, the Forsaken is almost entirely comprised of the human citizens of Lordaeron that were killed by the plague and broke free of the Scourge when Illidan attacked the Frozen Throne. With the exception of high elves, none of the other races really had any notable presence in the region, so Forsaken Tauren, Gnomes, etc., are few and far between.
It's only more recently that the Scourge have begun to turn other races undead (in the plaguelands and Northrend), and apart from some Death Knights, there haven't been any new break-away undead factions since Arthas merged with Ner'zhul. In other words, the Forsaken are mostly made up of the same members it always has been, humans from Lordaeron and a few elvish banshees.

If we're assuming that few other races were transformed into undead, even though they pretty much always just stomped over and would raise whatever was in their path, then I guess that would make the Death Knights any adventurers who either came to fight them or were stopping in town at the time.
But as far as I know, just because the Scourge was primarily attacking human lands, they probably steamrollered through a couple other places too. Not to mention Quel'Thelas. Where's all the High Elven Forsaken like Sylvanas? Granted, she's got that whole banshee thing going on...
kabshiel May 12th 2009 11:59AM
I think this answer is spot on. Most of the Forsaken would be human or high elves lore-wise, and Blizzard decided that they only wanted to create human models for time reasons.
If you look at the NPC Death Knights, you'll find that the vast majority are humans (with human models, since the Lich King doesn't like his elite servants rotting too much) and high/blood elves.
cactusham May 13th 2009 7:24PM
I suppose if most of the forsaken are supposed to be humans from lordaeron it makes more sense... but I've always wondered why you can't have a forsaken Hunter -- after all, their leader is one (I think Dark Ranger would most accurately translate to Hunter). But then, she's a blood elf and not a human, so maybe that's why for some reason (other than some nubs needing to make Legolases) blood elves can be hunters.

Not sure if this where I ask a question, but here it goes..
What is the story behind the frozen battle at thunder fall in storm peaks? ... It is very interesting to look at and I've been wondering what could have happened to make em all frozen in place like that?
Thanx.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on the no new classes in the next expansion.
Im willing to be a VERY large sum of money we will see a healer hero class come the next expansion.
I think the devs see a clear need for it.
Alex Ziebart May 11th 2009 7:41PM
I wouldn't complain one bit if we saw a new Healing class in the next expansion. I would actually be pretty excited! I just get a feeling we won't be seeing a new class. I hope you're right and I'm wrong, to be honest. : )
kia May 11th 2009 7:44PM
Agreed. I think there will be a healer/caster hybrid hero class to counter the tank/melee hero DK. Healers are still sorely needed on most servers. I know Blizzard have lately said they don't intend on having a hero class every expansion, but I definitely see a place for one in the next one.
Dedseksie May 11th 2009 8:47PM
If I remember correctly, one of the devs said on the forums that we should not expect a new race or hero class every expack. That kinda sealed it for me...
fobok May 12th 2009 6:02AM
I think signs are good we'll get a new race too. I believe after TBC they mentioned they wanted to add races a lot faster than classes, since they didn't mess up balance like adding new classes does. I believe they specifically mentioned every other expansion pack. Since we didn't get a new race in Wrath, I can see them adding a new one in the next expansion.
Mr42 May 12th 2009 12:05PM
remember, that healer shortage can be fixed by modyfying existing classes, making them more attractive to play.
it would be nice if we got a monk-like leather-or-mail-wearing rune-caster, but imagine the hell to balance eleventh class...
mazokuranma May 12th 2009 2:11PM
The dev that mentioned that we shouldn't expect a new hero class every x-pac was Ghostcrawler. They had a link to the interview where he said it on this site. I believe he's the lead developer too, so that seals it completely for me.

Pexxle -=SilverHand (RP)=- May 12th 2009 4:51PM
Agreed its not like the next expansion is being release in 2 weeks, we are talking years here.
Not adding new playable races would be FAIL, IMHO. Theres only so much Loot and Ginormous bosses one can grind to see and recieve before finding things repetitive after 4 years...
Furlbogs
Goblins
Walrus People
Wolvar
Oracles
Dryads
Take your pick(s) Blizzard, just don't be cocky and headstrong thinking you can't lose subscriptions.
Lukeyo May 11th 2009 7:44PM
Some kind of healer or support hero class would be nice. As a tank I don't think finding a group would ever be a task again, seeng as to what Death Knights have done for Wrath.
Mattimus May 11th 2009 8:09PM
I dunno. We have Four classes that heal (Priest, Druid, Shaman, Paladin) and Four classes that can tank (Warrior, Paladin, Druid, Death Knight). That seems about even.
If there IS a new Hero class, it will very likely be a Healer/caster DPS hybrid. But from a pure numbers standpoint, things are very balanced right now.
I'd really like for there NOT to be a new class... think about how much development time went into Death Knights, both before and after WotLK was released. A lot of that dev time could have gone into other content instead, and many people would be the happier for it. Not I, of course... though I don't play a Death Knight, I certainly don't begrudge someone else who wants to. But new classes and races certainly do take up a lot of development time and resources, and if we don't NEED a new Hero class, then "just because" is not really gonna cut it as a reason to make one.
Dulock May 11th 2009 9:20PM
@Mattimus
I think your comparison is unfair. Sure their are equal amounts of classes for tanks and healers but generally you need 2 to 3 times as many healers in a raid. So balancing the classes in favor of healers would mot likely have a positive effect not an unbalancing negative one.
Lorsty May 11th 2009 7:46PM
I'm dissapointed.
I thought the first question would go something like:
Q: "I have a question about the Draenei. Mainly, why have they stayed in Azeroth? I mean, I know for the sake of gameplay this is how things are, but is there any justification for it? Shouldn't Velen be in Shattrath?"
A: "The Draenei want to stick around. They love this planet! They came here; they saw cow and chicken and rode little horsies. THIS PLANET HAS EVERYTHING!"
=/
