GC on Hunters and their DPS
It took a few tries, but Ghostcrawler has finally agreed to post a "state of the Hunters" on the forums, and there's both good and bad news. First of all, GC flatly lays out that Hunter DPS was too high in Naxx -- Blizzard wants Hunters to be fighting with Locks, Rogues, and Mages for top DPS, not head and shoulders above them. And Survival is still the top DPS build in PvE; while GC says it's probably not a huge increase from the other specs, they are seeing it do better consistently. That said, Hunter DPS may be a little low now, but Blizzard isn't quite sure, for two reasons. First, people are still learning the Ulduar fights, and they don't completely trust the data they've gotten so far. And second, the main goal for fights in there was supposed to be variety, so there are very few places where DPS can just go all out and test how powerful they really are. GC says you should be asking "what's my DPS in this fight," rather than just "what's my DPS?"As for PvP, he says that the T.N.T. stuns and the big mana drains that Hunters could pull off in the past were just plain overpowered, and they won't be coming back. But as for where Hunters are going next, he says it's more of a function of nerfing other classes rather than buffing Hunters -- it's not that Hunters aren't going into Arena because they suck, it's because other classes are taking their place because they're better. He does say that Hunters are better in 5v5 (which makes sense -- Hunters have always been better from the back rather than forced into the middle of things like they might be in 3v3, and 2v2), and Blizzard is fairly OK with that, as not all classes are going to rock at all Arena levels.
Players, for the most part, are grudgingly agreeing -- T.N.T. stuns were pretty off the hook, and no one argues that Hunters weren't a little too powerful in Naxx. And keep in mind that there are still melee changes in the plans for Hunters: most of the complaints in the thread say that Hunters need more mobility and CC options, and certainly buffing their melee choices a bit would help with that. But we'll have to see what happens here -- I think GC is most insightful when he says that the problem with Hunters isn't necessarily Hunters, it's what other classes have been given lately. He does mention one change they might make (Marksman is mostly having an issue with mana management, so they could definitely buff the mana there a little bit), but it seems like there needs to be a little more smoothing in terms of where other classes are before we can clearly see where the issues lie with Hunters.

Hunters seem to be not the best at anything anymore
ibuprophen May 12th 2009 12:14PM
i disagree, hunters are the best of the best qqers out there. this is a know fact.
Rugus May 11th 2009 6:42PM
Readyng class forums, everyone will say the same exact thing for his class. No one is happy, ever.
comradesean May 11th 2009 6:45PM
Uhh, welcome to Wrath? They shouldn't expect to be the "best" at anything at all.
Kassu May 12th 2009 12:10PM
Nerf Volley, then we'll talk.
Hunter with 14k dps in Naxx10 gear on AOE heavy fights - WTF.

as a marksman hunter i have never really had a problem with mana, so i dont get that. i finally got deul spec and went BM and THATS where i had mana problems. i dont understand why anyone would say that bm is better than mm except that my pets can hold more aggro w/out using MD on them all the time, but by the time i pull the aggro in mm i have either Chimera shot ready to pound them or kill shot and thats the end of that. i also have a better dps vs bosses as a mm then i do as bm and i wish people saw that as an advantage against raid bosses. Amen for readiness

It really seems that ammo changes announced in 3.1 have been left out of the game.
artemis May 11th 2009 6:52PM
LOL...THAT would shut up hunters for a while, its like give a candy to a child and then taking it back...what the child will do? OFC /CRY QQ
im very dissapointed with Blizz for that one

We don't need ammo changes. We could use some new ammo past Ulduar, but stacking to 1000 works just fine IMO.
Rugus May 12th 2009 10:17AM
Yes, there're other much more important updates that need to be added before this one. Stackable Clam Meat for example was indeed much wanted, needed and of course pvp-pve-raid-solo-balance wise.

Mages and Hunters continue to be top DPS, but Rogues and Warlocks? I rarely see them up top, especially Rogues. I think Blizzard might be misjudging their DPS classes. I see Death Knights, Paladins and Druids above Rogues and Warlocks most of the time in DPS.
theremover May 11th 2009 6:56PM
Then you play with bad rogues. A proper rogue should be on top or close to it unless it's a very unfavorable fight.
OceanSpray May 11th 2009 8:17PM
I never see our guild rogues on the top three anymore and they are great players at what they do. It's usually mages or hunters>locks>warriors/DK's etc... and so on after that.
obarthelemy May 11th 2009 8:44PM
In my guild, its Rogues first almost always, then warlocks, then hunters, then mages.
We even laughed a few times, because we got EXACTLY that: 3 rogues, then 3 warlocks, then 3 hunters...
It's sad when the class you're playing has more impact on our DPS than individual skill, or even gear.
My complaint about my Hunter is not so much about DPS, but that they turned it into a BC-style shadow priest: always waiting on cooldowns. Especially Surv, which is the "rox" spec these days. To me, watching timers, especially CD timers (even more than DOTs), is no fun at all, and distracts from enjoying the fight.
I also don't like the total obscurity of various gears and bonuses. Even reading elitistjerks.com, I don't know if I need more crit, haste, arpen... On top of that, they change those mechanics way too frequently and violently. My Disc priest is in the process of changing all his gear from Crit to anything else, since Blibli out of the blue made crit almost worthless for Disc priests in 3.1... whereas it was THE key stat before. Months of farming Naxx in the trash can, and I'm not even a (dis-)enchanter.

In almost all the Naxx raids I've pugged, warlocks and rogues were at the top. My DPS as a beastmaster hunter is always competitive though, even though I've only got average gear.
flawless May 12th 2009 8:33AM
I've been ahead of my guild for some time as far as gear goes, and as a Survival Hunter have been top of the charts. As rogues, mages, warlocks caught up to my gear level, things started to level off a bit.
Rogues followed by warlocks are the ones chasing me, with mages a distant fourth. Never been challenged by a hybrid class, except Priests on encounters that include multiple mobs.
Over the last few Ulduar encounters, I've been pulling ahead by anything up to 1k DPS. Beyond the fact that I've spent a lot more time learning my class, the only thing I can put this down to is ArP increase.

if GC admited that hunters got overnerfed would be the chaos in the forums, but the right thing to do is fix them, and yes...they really got overnerfed! in 100 players in pvp u see 1 hunter! something is wrong here, and saying that a class is made for 5v5 and not for 2v2 or 3v3 is like admiting they love rogues and want them to be the best in everywhere, same with locks and DKs!
hunters are the easiest class to kill!
PeeWee May 11th 2009 8:43PM
"if GC admited that hunters got overnerfed..."
You say it as if there was an option. This is Blizzard, remember? There is no such thing as "nudging a class in the right direction". ^^
tgcam May 12th 2009 6:36AM
I see lot's of hunters in pvp. and FYI shamans are easier to murder, at least for me. not even the restos give me that much trouble.
Fataljustice May 20th 2009 9:02AM
wow. you must be playin against some pretty trashy hunters. a hunter that is easy to kill is a hunter that needs to reroll a melee class.
