BlizzCon badges are back
Danielle "Shyka" Brown is back again, and making custom art badges of your character to put in your BlizzCon lanyard. We covered her last year before the convention, and so if you're headed to BlizzCon and want to put a little custom memento of what your character looks like, now's the time to order them. She's starting a little earlier, so they're a bit cheaper, only $30 per badge, but any orders after June 16th will go up to $40 because presumably she'll be in crunch time. The good news is that since the last set of BlizzCon ticket sales are on May 30th, you should know for sure by then whether you're going or not.And as you can see from the pictures at left, the quality of her work is pretty darn good -- there's a whole collection of her work from last year over on the blog, and it would be neat to have any of those hanging from your neck at BlizzCon.
If past years are any indication, Blizzard will definitely put your character's name somewhere on your ID badge for the convention (and they've also asked for your faction affiliation and/or class in the past, so those may make an appearance as well). But this is something a little extra, especially if you're planning to meet up with in-game friends or guildies (or attend the sure-to-be-awesome WoW Insider bash, which we'll be having on Thursday night yet again), to identify yourself on the convention floor.

$30 will get you two months of WoW (among other things) vs. one moment of nerd glory

All that does for me is to underscore just how cheap WoW is in the larger scheme of things.
Custom artwork is about as cool a personal treasure as you can hope to own. $30 is peanuts.

In the words of Chuck Palahniuk's nameless narrator...
"One minute was enough, Tyler said, a person had to work hard for it, but a minute of perfection was worth the effort. A moment was the most you could ever expect from perfection."

$30 commission? Are you kidding me, that's fucking excellent. Artists change hundreds of dollars for commissions so $30 is bloody brilliant.
Also note that if you're paying to go to BlizzCon you would probably also have money for extra crap like this. Why bother going otherwise? You could just stay home and read the updates whilst using the money on WoW time.
Personally, I don't like her artwork. I think it's brilliant, don't get me wrong. Just not my cup of tea. I'd also rather pay the extra $20 US on artwork I like more than hers (just personal preference).
I have no problem with paying $50-100 on artwork. No problem at all. That's a good deal to what I've seen and what people charge in my chosen career (I do web design, avg price for that is anywhere from $100 to $500 for a layout).

If you're paying hundreds of dollars on an artist to do work for you, it usually comes out TOP of the line otherwise why would you pay them that much money in the first place?
That being said, different artists will charge different prices as they progress from unknown to f***ing brilliant (amateur to professional). The pictures above, I don’t mean to sound disrespectful, just seem rushed. And before someone slaps me with “You get what you pay for” they just seem like they could have been more refined, a tad more developed. (The eyes bother me in both pictures - there’s just something wrong in their design.)

I would like to see some of your fantastic art that you commission seeing how you possess a great appraisal ability. I'm sure Antique Road Show could use someone with your keen eyes. It's $30 dollars, honestly do you expect a Caravaggio?

It's interesting to contrast this high value item with the cheap TCG IPhone app http://www.wowinsider.com/2009/05/12/wow-lifecounter-tracks-tcg-life-on-the-iphone/. I would spend $30 on a custom handmade piece of art that took some skill to create. I wouldn't spend 1$ on an IPhone app that a novice developer spent a few hours on and can be replaced with a pencil.
Time and skill equals value.

Awww, stupid job. I want to go to BlizzCon & get my main as a custom graphic. /cry

@self
Dammit Self. Read the lady's website next time & you'll see you don't have to go to Blizzcon to be able to order the badge. You can order it from her for $30 & she'll e-mail you a high res image. An additional $5 will get you a hard copy mailed to you. Also, add $5 for each mini-pet, hunter/lock pet, or even mount! Very cool.

I'm glad she's back at it :) The Alhazad (me) and Mishotah (my GF) pics on her blog were commissioned for last year and were worth every penny.

I think everyone playing the game can recognize that shield.
