The Queue: Of vampires and lances
Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Alex Ziebart will be your host today. We're going to jump right in today, because we have plenty to talk about this time around!
NarwhalFrenzy asked...
"Referring to the quest Out of Body Experience, we already know what happened to Prince Keleseth and Prince Valanar, but will we ever figure out what happened to the other darkfallen there, like Prince Theraldis or Prince Atherann?"
I have no doubt we'll be seeing them in Patch 3.3, in and around Icecrown. Prince Theraldis (the one on a horse (with an equine-themed pashmina afghan)) seems to have been the overseer of that whole project going on during Out of Body Experience, so I wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to be a raid boss and Prince Atherann is in a 5-man or a group quest elsewhere. Though it would be interesting if they were a side-by-side raid boss, like the Twin Emperors. Hm!
Erik asked...
"I am currently leveling my first Horde character through Outland (Hellfire Peninsula right now). What quest hubs should I be on the lookout for lore-wise? I've heard Nagrand was good (being the home of the Orcs or something I believe), what else should I not miss?"
I haven't taken a Horde character through Outland yet, I've only read the quests and all of that on places like Wowwiki and Wowhead. I'm going to take a stab at this question anyway in the hope that our readers will have some thoughts on it as well for the comments.
My stab at this: Nagrand is very, very good, but you need to make sure you do pretty much every quest chain there. It opens up the truly epic questline after you've done almost everything else. Blade's Edge Mountains has a great quest chain involving Rexxar, and Shadowmoon Valley has amazing quests for both factions. I personally love Zangarmarsh because of its overall ambiance, but that's just me.
Zerounit asked...
"Is there a website that approaches PvP like Elitist Jerks approaches PvE?"
Arena Junkies.
sadloser asked...
"I'll admit I'm not the best PvPer, but I gotta say that rogue stunlocks seem ridiculous. I know it depends on which class you're playing but is there any good way to beat them? Are they considered OP? Even with my trinket it seems unfair that I go from full health to dead without a chance to fight back. Not looking for advice so much as what the overall opinion on this is. I'm guessing nothing but rogues laughing at me."
If you don't have good PvP gear (and I mean really good gear, I'm talking epics. Those blues don't cut it), Rogues will be one of the classes that destroy you, along with people like Death Knights and Mages and Ret Paladins. When you're in actually good gear, the playing field levels out quite a bit. Rogues can't pull off the super-gibs nearly as well anymore.
I've found that the key to breaking a Rogue's stun chain is to trinket the Kidney Shot. Just wait out the Cheap Shot, let it happen and run out. When the Kidney Shot lands, that's when you trinket. If you could tell us your class in the comments below, I bet people would have other tips for you as well.
Amberlee asked...
"Argent Tournament Dailies - Why do I have both an Argent Lance and an Alliance Lance in my bag? Is it safe to get rid of one or both? I know there are lance racks around but are they for the alliance or argent lances?"
There are two different types of lances for flavor, but as far as I can tell they don't serve any different functions. You can do all of the quests with just one type of lance. You can throw one away. You can throw both away if you want, and just grab one off of any rack if you suddenly need one. It doesn't matter if it's an Alliance(or Horde) or an Argent lance. They both work.

zangarmarsh kicked ass. end of story.
Nagrand is pretty damn good though.
Sumanai May 12th 2009 10:12PM
for Erik that asked the lore question:
you have to do some quests in Hellfire so you can become Neutral with the Mag'har before you can head out to Nagrand and experience the big chain that leads some great lore around Thrall and his people.
check http://www.wowhead.com/?faction=941
so you can know where to start.

It is actually pretty annoying when you get two lances. I always used to throw one out. Good thing I got my Crusader title and don't need to do them anymore. They're horrible (despite offering a nice amount of money).
As for the Horde Outland question, I'd also recommend Nagrand (with the long Thrall chain), but don't forget to do the Hellfire ones first. Well, the Peninsula itself is also pretty epic. I don't know what Alliance lovers think, but I found the Thrallmar quests better than the Honor Hold ones.
But if you want really great lore behind the quest lines, wait until you hit Northrend. That's a nice bite of history and epicness. And Lich King-ness.
skreeran May 12th 2009 4:44PM
And go to Borean Tundra. Saurfang breaks the scale on epic.

So what's up with the Tournament mount spells? Whenever I cast one, or should I say spam casting one until it actually casts, the cooldown starts, hiccups then starts over. No other vehicle spell does this. It is impossible to complete any of the harder jousting quests because of it.
vexis58 May 12th 2009 8:35PM
The argent lances are annoying, because they keep trying to give you new ones, and never take away the old ones. Every time I pick up a daily, it says "you already have one of those!" and I end up having to delete them when I'm done to make room.
And they can't make an excuse that "it's so you can have mounted fights without having the quest" because that's what the racks are supposed to be for.
They really could have designed that better.
placebo May 13th 2009 1:27PM
@vinniedcleaner : Stop Spam casting.
vinniedcleaner May 14th 2009 8:05PM
What I mean about spam casting is this, I try to cast a spell (when it's off it's cooldown), doesn't work, so I try again, and again, and again, etc until it actually casts. The other thing I notice is that the mob I am targeting starts attacking me even before the spell casts. There is definately something wrong with the AT mount spells, I don't have any problems with any other vehicle types.

i never quested through swamp of sorrows but i'd like to know what the dealio is with the dragons there lorewise.
VSUReaper May 12th 2009 4:48PM
The Green Dragonflight tried to sink the temple where Hakkar was being resurrected and decided to stick around and guard it. As they guarded it, the evil seeped out and started to screw with them (hence the reason you have to kill so many of them inside the instance)
The ones outside are just there to keep nosy kids out so that they dont unwittingly summon the troll god and destroy the world.
Daranador May 12th 2009 10:10PM
Which we do anyway. Green dragons have it bad.
paul.marsico May 12th 2009 4:43PM
905 resilience and being crit out of stealth for 6K says differently.
And what are you saying about mages? All melee destroys low resi clothies. That's it.
They close the distance quickly, too. It's a major issue, and it shouldn't be brushed off.
You have to jump through hoops to kill melee with clothies. You have to have a pulse to kill clothies with melee.
Real fair......
Angus May 12th 2009 5:35PM
Try being an enhance shaman. Only way to get to a clothie is a 3 minute CD for wolves...
Otherwise any mage has their way with you.
It is also the only melee class that has to kite other melee to survive, cause you know, that makes sense...
Most clothies have ways of keeping melee away, if as a mage you can't manage that, you need to either l2specfrost or reroll a dk, cause you aren't going to ever do well. Mages are guys that give my paladin the worst time, and as that I have a ton of ways to get out of snares. I can usually get to a lock or priest. But mages even get to blink out of my stun.

think thats bad
3v3 arena today
I'm on my hunter; 29.8k hp 10.2k armor with fort and mark of the wild (comp D priest, Feral druid, SV hunte)
I have right over 1k resil
mage polies our priestshe trinkets and gets sheeped again; druid opens on thier priest as do I; rogue opens on my mnage targets me and before he gets a cast is cycloned. I got burt from my almosst 30k hp to 0 in under 6 seconds blowing my trinket, and disengage (he dismantled me so i couldn't deterance)
I will finally admit it... resil does NOT work against rogues
note i armoried the bastard, 4 pieces T8.5 and I232 weapons
and for huntes thinkign i am bad i RoS'd myself and my pet interviened, he resisted my trap, and dodged my crabs pin ... just cards stacked against me... but i think getting crit for 6-7k with 1k resil is a LITTLE excessive
LEGofreak May 13th 2009 9:26AM
I don't know what your talking about my Lock just burns through Melee Classes sure we get soul link and all those other goodies but when i don't have my PvP gear i still go mow them down. Rogues is just a matter of CC them stunning them slowing them just do whatever you need to to keep them away from you.
paul.marsico May 13th 2009 9:56AM
That hunter's story is crazy.
But I mean, ranged can cry about this forever. This game is made for melee. The rogue class has no use for resilience, and, therefore, murders ranged........
And Mr. Enhance shammy, I feel your pain. Are you a caster? Are you melee? WTF did they do to you?
Horris May 13th 2009 11:39AM
How do you beat a rogue? Be a prot warrior with Damage Shield.
VSUReaper May 12th 2009 4:44PM
@ the question about rogues
Yeah, its pretty lame to have that happen, just like its really lame to have to kill a paladin 3 times (initial health, bubble+heal, LOH) before he actually stays dead.
For me (I used to play a priest in S2-3) I would just wait for the kidney shot and trinket out of that and then fear and pray to god that I bought enough time for my partner to save me. If it was 1v1, then I would start dotting and tossing some quick shadow spells on him and then try to snipe a heal in there to heal myself. The trick was to not get caught doing a big holy spell b/c they would do something that would lock you out of that school of magic for like 10 sec.
Now that I tool around on my warrior (prot) mostly, I just let them do their worst and then turn around and shield block and let them kill themselves on the damage shield. Save your fear/shockwave for when he dismantles you (which needs a firm nerf imo - no other class has to deal with ALL their damage abilities and all but 1 defensive abilities getting turned off by a single ability - dismantle takes away both the sword and the shield, and if there is no chain or titanium plating, your screwed). Once they blow dismantle, I know I can usually win unless they are really good at running away.
As Alex said though, if you are in the best gear you can get, rogues turn into a minor annoyance at best b/c they cant burst anymore.
Eli May 14th 2009 3:38PM
ROFL AT WARRIOR QQ.
Wait a minute. Warriors the only one having to deal with all of their abilities being taken away? Take a minute to think about all the defensie abilities you have in the first place. Now think about how few the other classes have, such as the hunter. We've got two. Deterrence, and Disengage. Maybe Scattered Shots if you're pure PvP Survival. Deterrence has has a 20 second CD that we can only use when unstunned. Rogue stuns, I trinket, disengage, rogue re-stealths, disarms me, I can't cast scattered shots or deterrence, rogue restuns me and kills me. This fight repeats with every rogue i fight. Unless it's an usually shitty rogue.
You were saying?

Is there any way to make a macro that will not use a glyph that you have? That seems a bit of an awkward question, but let me explain: I have a macro set up to do a random polymorph whenever I cast it, and have the glyph that makes my polymorph into a penguin. I think it would be pretty nifty to be able to have both the penguin and the sheep in the rotation. Any known way to do this, or will I have to chose between the classic and the cute?
