In arenas, it's mostly up to your partner(s) to peel off of you. Pally stuns, DK death grips, druid cyclones, etc. Defensive gear obviously makes a big difference, but many rogues in arena run with mostly PvE gear and can put out tremendous pressure, even through 900+ resil, so you will need peels.
In battlegrounds or general world PvP, you're in a lot of trouble when they get a clean opener on you and no one is around to help. PvP is balanced for arena play, not for battlegrounds or general 1v1 combat, which is why rogues sometimes seem overpowered outside of arena.
