Breakfast Topic: What if achievements had existed in classic WoW?
One of our readers, Eli, wrote in last night with a suggestion for a Breakfast Topic: if achievements had existed in classic WoW, what would they have been? It provoked some back-channel discussion here with staffers wondering how the game would have been different if beating the boss or dungeon wasn't the only thing on your plate:Me: What would a hard-mode Ragnaros have been like?
Adam Holisky: Kill Ragnaros using only one tank!
Eliah Hecht: Domo comes back from the dead and starts randomly sheeping raid members in revenge.
Other suggestions included killing Hakkar with all of his priests still up, hearthing with Hakkar's debuffs and infecting at least 500 players with Corrupted Blood (back when this was still possible, of course), killing at least 500 Dwarves without dropping combat in the Lyceum, the Stratholme timed run, and -- as Sacco suggested -- "getting through an UBRS run without (anyone) quitting." Having recently leveled a Shaman through this content, I can tell you that's one achievement I wouldn't have managed.
If you were back in classic WoW again with no chance of advancing beyond level 60 talents and gear, what would make for a worthwhile achievement?

Back in vanilla?
Win a Alterac Valley match under 25 minutes in length
Defeat a warlock in a duel ( grants title Wickedslayer)
Mind control an enemy on the bridge to Molten Core and let him jump in the lava(priest only)
Kill Ragnaros before trash mobs respawn.....

You realise most, if not all Alterac valleys back in the day went on for days?
And warlocks were considered one of the weakest and most broken classes in the game at release. Debuff cap anyone?
Auldrin May 13th 2009 9:21AM
@Hakker
The whole point of the alterac valley one was that winning in 6 minutes like now, would be near impossible. You have a point about warlocks though.

debuff cap really only applies in pve

I think the Naxxaramas achievements would have carried more weight than they do now.
Asteh May 13th 2009 8:24AM
Get 100 killing blows in Blackrock Mountain.
Survive 1 hour straight in Stranglethorn Vale outside the cities without dying.
Hit The Immovable Object with your The Unstoppable Force.
elstor May 13th 2009 5:09PM
Or hit the Immovable Object with a Stoppable Force and do at least ----- damage. Never played in vanilla, don't know what a good amount would be.
elstor May 13th 2009 5:10PM
Strike that, Stoppable Force was a BC item. But if achievments came out when BC was released... ; )

Well, the old world achievements (like we have them now) would be in there, and most feats of strength we (don't) have now, would be achievements to be gotten.
Getting that first mount (or plainsrunning) at 40 and the epic one at 60 would be a REAL achievement, warlocks and paladins would have an easier time getting a group for their epic mount quests.
Nowadays, finding a group to do the quest is an achievement on itself.
All old-world-bosses could have achievements tied to them in how you take them out (like Arugal with nobody over 20 in the group or something)
Rai May 13th 2009 2:20PM
If there was an achievement to kill him with no-one in the group over 20, and you dinged 20 and missed it, the achievement becomes impossible to ever accomplish on that character.
That's bad mojo.

I never understood why people quit halfway through UBRS, it wasn't that hard.
Omestes May 13th 2009 12:37PM
It was LONG and ANNOYING though.
Its like keeping the same five people on a full-clear BRD run without anyone getting lost or bored and logging. Well maybe not that bad, but still.
I do miss that type of instance though, the ones with interesting mechanics, fights, and huge intricate layouts. A test of endurance, skill, and patience. But then again BRD (and UBRS) are still my favorite instances in the game.
