I would say the rise in popularity in Druids is primarily due to the rise in popularity of the hybrid classes. For example, I had a holy priest at level 60 many moons ago that was extremely popular and in high demand. However, this all changed with BC and WotLK. Other classes, like druid, became outstanding healers and the allure of holy priests greatly dimished. So what did I do, but level a paladin and druid, both being great if not better healers than my priest. The same fate happened to my warrior.
A class like the druid is great at healing, great at tanking and great at DPS. No wonder their popularity has risen. With the recent release of dual specs, the days of a specialist class has practically disappeared. I kind of miss those days.
