There's something to be said for class familiarity, as well. Paladins, in particular, benefit from the cachet of being, well, knights in shining armour and all those classic fantasy associations.
When paladins were generally considered the weakest class, for ages, in WoW they were still popular. Hell, back in the olden days of MORGS like Dark Ages of Camelot paladins were popular even though pretty much everyone agreed that they kinda sucked.
