WoW Rookie: Filter out the #$%!

Hey, isn't that the same screenshot we used for WoW Rookie just two weeks ago? Indeed it is, faithful readers – because frankly, "Who wants my man meat?" is the perfect illustration for today's topic.
The World of Warcraft is your refuge at the end of a long, hard day – and the last thing you want to see rolling across your screen is the kind of lowbrow posturing that's given Barrens chat its notorious reputation. Or perhaps you'd like to let the kids try their hands at WoW, but you don't want them soaking up the rough language that seems to turn up more and more frequently in busy city Trade and General channels.
It's time to take charge of your game chat.
Turn on the profanity filter. WoW's profanity filter is on by default, but many players disable it as soon as they realize it's bowdlerizing their chat text. If your kids are beginning to eye their own characters, you may want to revisit the profanity filter. Hit your Escape key to go the Main Menu, and go to Interface Options, then Advanced Options. Look for the Mature Language Filter in the Chat section.
Be forewarned that the existence of a profanity filter does not give players an excuse to use inappropriate language in game. "The Mature Language Filter is only an extra means of protection from obscenities in chat channels, not an excuse to use them," says Blizzard. "All players need to adhere to the World of Warcraft Harassment Policy at all times."
Leave the public chat channels. Whether you're trying to dodge Barrens chatter for a more peaceful, immersive play session or trying to protect young ears from the kind of ear-blistering talk that's likely to erupt in zones frequented by immature players (Barrens and Elwynn Forest, we're looking at you), sometimes it's easier to simply leave the General and Trade channels. To leave General chat, type /leave general; to rejoin, type /join general. Note that you may not be able to rejoin Trade or city-specific channels unless you are in that city.
Ignore problem players. You can keep from seeing chat messages (both public and private) from players who annoy you by adding them to your ignore list. To ignore a player, type /ignore playername. You can view your Ignore list by clicking your Social button (the same place you'd look for your Friends list).
WoW offers a relatively small ignore list. If you run out of room on your list, you may find you need to remove some players from your list or install an add-on that allows you to ignore more players.

This!
I got into a lengthy debate a few weeks ago as to whether or not it was worth the effort to take on the miscreants in the Trade Channel. This article has clear examples of what works, what doesn't work, and why we should care about our servers.
Thanks for the link.

Not this.
The problem that I have with that approach is that I pay my $15 to play the game. If I want to play virtual cop I can play that somewhere else. In fact, I often play police man in RL, I don't want to do it in the game.
If someone wants to do Blizzards job for them, fine. But as for me they are going on ignore and I'm moving on.

I agree with Daniel.
I report people but I'm not wasting my WoW time trying to be a citizen on patrol.
If someone gets off getting people banned/suspended while paying a subscription to do so, that's their decision. Just don't expect me too.
I skimmed the posted website. That is a lot of time invested.

An easy way to eliminate the garbage of the trade channel without having to /leave trade and /join trade is to use Fane addon.
Create a channel with trade (plus whispers). On your main channel, leave trade.
Trade is there when you need it, but out of sight when you don't. It's made my life a lot easier

Amaxe,
Thank you for the suggestion! I have a separate chat tab for whispers, but never thought about one for just trade. Will have to give that a try!
Thank you again.

I love reporting people.

Does anyone actually use ingame voice? I played for six months after it came out and never saw or heard of anyone using it.
Opatha May 13th 2009 11:43PM
I used in-game voice chat once, it wasn't very clear and it was very very quite. I would not suggest anyone use it if you can avoid it.
Urza May 14th 2009 4:10AM
A lot of people gone on Vent. WoW ingame voice chat slows down WoW.

Another good voice chat service is GSC. I have used it (and still use it for friends), and think the chat is really clear. Also, it's free for up to 200 people. It's hosted on remote servers, allows creation of numerous *chat rooms*, and allows up to 200 people...for free. It does use a bit more resources than ventrilo, but not too much. Oh, and did I mention that it's free for up to 200 people? :P
Note: The one thing that isn't ideal about GSC is that there isn't official support for 64-bit (although, it may work under 64-bit emulation). GSC is a good alternative to the guilds that may want to use a good, clean voice client that isn't reliant on a checkbook.
You can get it here: http://getgsc.com/

Last week I got some dude permanently banned for making a child abuse joke in trade, it was radd.
Carnosauria May 13th 2009 11:39PM
Cool story, brah.

Oh sure, leave us hanging. An actual journalist would have at least let us know who wanted said man meat.

I don’t swear much at all, I’m definitely against inflammatory language and racism in all its forms, and I think discrimination is one of the lowest things to joke about or do. That being said the best way to combat them is to use reason and discussion. Enforcing censorship based on a bunch of rules that nobody else gave a second thought to, which are terribly arbitrary, is a tad illogical.
How does Blizzard define, exactly, what constitutes “unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, hateful, sexually explicit, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable” language? An individual has no idea what they will or won’t be punished for. If they’re at least going to discipline individuals because of language, doing it by a catch-all method where it’s up to their “discretion” hardly seems fair.
Besides which, what makes something “vulgar” and something else “sanitary” is based upon convention and little else. Fuck means the same thing as sexual intercourse, but whence its vulgarity? Why will saying “fuck” in trade get you banned, but not “sexual intercourse”?
I guess the point I’m really trying to make is, who’s more immature: The teens who get off by spamming anal in trade, or the adults who can’t get over the spam?
Also, to all the people who feel big for reporting others, enjoy your life getting a high off giving out parking tickets.

Reported.
Jinx May 14th 2009 1:50AM
@Phil:
Agreed. I go out of my way to report gold selling bots most of the time but don't mind terribly players that swear or make abusive comments unless it gets far out of control (anything close to any form of discrimination warrants a report imo).

Trade chat is "public" property - I won't let them force me out because of a few "dirty" words. Lots of stuff goes on in trade chat (Skullcrusher EU), like LFG/LFM, asking/offering advice, announcing book spawns in Dalaran, etc.. Sure the occasional Dirge spam chugs along, but I'd rather laugh with them instead of report them. Spam doesn't "hurt", neither do upper case letters: sure they are annoying/unpleasant/hard-to-read but noone's going to lose on arm over it and it'll hardly last more than a minute.
verenov May 14th 2009 6:01PM
Actually, the word *fuck* isn't strictly referring to sexual intercourse. In common language it is actually used more often as something that *doesn't* refer to sexual intercourse at all.
Here is an educational video regarding the word *fuck*. It isn't very long, but *very* informative it most certainly is:

It's funny - I can handle the swearing, but not the illiteracy. It took me a long while to build up the mental fortitude to ignore "your" where it should be "you're", or "to" where it should be "too", etc.
Remen May 14th 2009 10:45AM
I am with you 100% on this one.
