One option that has worked well for me is to create a new chat window that has everything the normal window has except the general, trade, and defense channels. Then, when I want some peace and quiet I just lick on that special tab and it is like automatically turning off the channels I don't want.
Right click on the General tab in the chat window, create a new channel, and set it's options as to what kind of text will appear. For me it is everything except the public channels. Then at the click of one button you can now go back and forth with ease.

Err, typo in second paragraph... should say "create new window" or something to that effect. The term channel may confuse someone. Sorry! =)
