Project 62*80: 62 level 80s by Christmas
I first heard about this from El Jeppy when I visited him and company on the Rawrcast Show a few weeks ago, but now he's posted a little more about goals and method on his site. He's just beginning something called "Project 62*80," which sounds pretty crazy on the front of it: he's planning to level 62 different characters (which is apparently one of each race and class combination for both Horde and Alliance) to level 80, and he's planning to do it by Christmas of this year. With 224 days until Christmas, that's 22 levels a day -- pretty easy when you're starting from level one, but not so much when you're trying to do 60-80.He's not just grinding away on it, though -- he's chosen to do some multiboxing, and plans to level three characters at a time up until 60, and then three to five characters per group up to level 80, so if he can move four characters up five levels each a day, he'll be pretty close to his goal rate. And he's using recruit-a-friend, so the triple XP will make things even easier on him. It definitely seems like he can do it if he stays committed, but man, it's not something that would ever appeal to me.
He started off with Paladins (for the free mounts and the survivabiilty), and from there it sounds like he's going with Death Knights next, to raise some quick gold for the rest of the enterprise. You can follow his progress over on the Ten Gnomes blog if you want to see where he's at. It's hard to wish him luck (does anyone really need 62 freakin' 80s?), but we'll do it anyway: good luck, Jeppy.

I've been working on one of every class to level 80. However, I've been doing it all on one account and was hoping to find some hidden account-based acheivement for it, but as of hitting one of every class at level 70, one account, one server, no RAF or multi-cheating there's nothing to show all the work I've done.
Oh well, guess after I hit my personal achievement I'll just take one toon and achievement whore like everyone else in the world.
Boydboyd May 14th 2009 4:13PM
Phang, "multi-cheating" you say?
How in the world is it cheating?
jay May 14th 2009 4:15PM
It's not cheating, it's just a big bloody waste of money, but each too his own I guess:)

Blizzards typical contradictory language...
Eula, Section 2:
You agree that you will not, under any circumstances:
B. use cheats, automation software (bots), hacks, mods or any other unauthorized third-party software designed to modify the World of Warcraft experience
Multiboxing is not possible without automation software. That's not including all the damaging social aspects, such as sales of accounts, gold-farming, power-leveling, etc. covered under section C.
cjshrader May 14th 2009 4:38PM
It doesn't require any automation. Every action done on each character is due directly to a key press by the player.

"Multiboxing is not possible without automation software."
*Honks the big horn*
Wrong answer. Yes it is, you still have to press the buttons.
Gör om, gör rätt. ("Redo, do it right.")

"Multiboxing is not possible without automation software."
Blizzard defines what "automation software" is.
The multiboxing software that is deemed legal by Blizzard is such that you hit one key, and it sends that key press to each instance of wow.
They've likened it to pulling levers. If pulling one lever sets a whole machine in motion--pulleys, chains, wheels--that's automation. If I press a key and it repeats that key every five seconds until I press another key, that's automation software, and it's against the terms of service.
As it is, it's like the lever you pull is tied by string to 1-4 other levers. You pull one, you pull them all, but nothing else happens. Blizzard has chosen not to deem this action "automation." Therefore, as much as you might not like multiboxing, it simply is not cheating.

Multiboxing is not automation. All the software does is carry the keypresses to the second (or third, or fourth) instance of WoW. You still have to press keys to make the toons do anything, as opposed to software that automatically makes the other toons attack, heal, follow, etc for you.

automation
Definition
The use of computers to control a particular process in order to increase reliability and efficiency, often through the replacement of employees.
One human input, one reaction = not automation.
One human input, 60 reactions = automation.
Don't know why the multicheaters get so uppity when they are called out, they are completely safe from Blizz who will claim they are legal as long as they get money from the extra accounts.

if blizzard deems it legit its legit, no one cares what webster's dictionary has to say on the matter
Token May 14th 2009 5:11PM
"Automation Software (bots)"
Using Blizzard approved software to push a button you're pushing doesn't make it illegal.
Roflpanda May 14th 2009 5:11PM
Uppty? You're the one on defensive.
Because you're wrong. Blizzard has defined what multi-boxing is, and that it does not fall under "automation".
End.
Of.
Story.
Your sweet, sweet (and salty), tears are not going to persuade this otherwise.
Bubsa May 14th 2009 5:11PM
Do you actually honestly believe that only one output can be achieved by one human input? That's ridiculous.
I mean, take your post(s), for example. Not only do you come across as pathetic, you also come across as an ignoramus!
Phang May 14th 2009 5:17PM
Panda, it's the exact same thing as corrupt cops and judges taking money to look the other way, only this way they've legalized it in order to rake in the cash. You're only "illegal" (breaking the EULA) if you do it on a single account. Pay more, and suddenly you're golden.
Bubsa, I just used a dictionary definition. There are more people who can read at your grade-school level to insult on the Blizzard General forums.
Avan May 14th 2009 5:31PM
Section 2, as quoted, also makes mention of third-party software. Software used to multi-box is third-party software, unless Blizz released something themselves.
To multibox, don't you need to use such third-party software?

"The use of computers to control a particular PROCESS in order to increase reliability and efficiency, often through the replacement of employees."
"One human input, one reaction = not automation.
One human input, 60 reactions = automation. "
well if were gonna keep giving definitions...
proc⋅ess
–noun
1. a systematic series of actions directed to some end
Broadcasting keystrokes is not a series of actions, it is the same as using a multiplex to have one keyboard interface with 2+ computers, but at a software level vs hardware level, or having one computer output the same image to multiple monitors. By your example it seems that if I have two drumsticks, one in each hand, each hitting a seperate drum its not automation, but if I then put both drumsticks in one hand and hit both drums at the same time I am automating the procedure.
If you'd like to delve even further in your argument against automation with WoW perhaps we are all cheating. Maybe we should all stop using our operating systems and simply convert machine level code to assembly language then to a higher level language and draw each frame of the game by hand, as our computers are automating that for us at the moment. 01100010011010010110111001100001011100100111100100100000011001100111010001110111. Maybe WoW should require us to access it from the command prompt instead of using a shortcut. Since automation is the use of computers to improve the efficiency of a process perhaps all those helpful addons should be banned as well, since they certainly help improve efficiency in one regard or another.
I guess the point of my rant is that botting is automation, whereas key broadcasting is not. Your argument is flawed.
Matt May 14th 2009 5:56PM
Automation isn't violation of TOS either. UNATTENDED automation is. Programming and using timed macros on a Logitech G10 isn't illegal (Trust me I've asked and its okay). Not playing the game and hitting buttons is grounds for a ban. Even if you're using /castsequence.
BTW, multiboxing is replicating inputs - not automation, its just like tying 5 levers together, it's still 1 step.
Phang May 14th 2009 6:08PM
Matt...you might want to check again.
From Blizzard Poster Vrakthris:
"The use of the automated game play features that the G15 keyboard is capable of would be considered a violation of our Terms of Use and as such should be avoided."
"Use of the keyboard as a keyboard is fine."
In other words, you can only use your G10 as a keyboard, plain and simple. You CANNOT program the macro keys.
And yes Avan, programs such as KeyClone are third-party software used to replicate key commands to unattended systems.
Vikenti May 14th 2009 6:16PM
I'd say it's more syncing than automation. It's not like he's hitting a key and leaving for a few hours while his toons level themselves. He still has to actively play them all simultaneously.
I understand that you don't like it, but it's clearly not against the rules. Why is it not against the rules? Because Blizzard makes all of the rules that pertain to this game. And guess what. They say it's not breaking the rules.
Wither May 14th 2009 7:38PM
To actually understand automation and what is possible with multi-boxing you really have to try it or equivalently try to program an addon.
It's very easy to try it for no cost at all - just use a trial account for your 2nd.
Experience will quickly tell you a few things.
1) Programming away any "decisions" in an addon or macro is impossible. They can't figure out when to cast that spell or who to cast it on. All the API will let you do is display information to you the user, so that you can make a judgement call on how to interpret it.
2) Controlling more than one character at once is hard. Controlling more than one when they are different classes is very hard.
I'm not trying to convince the OP troll who is probably beyond convincing, but to anyone else out there who fancies a difficult challenge and a new WoW experience - try programming an addon or multiboxing.
