The NBA playoffs, presented by World of Warcraft

This isn't exactly shocking news (this just in: Blizzard has an advertising budget!) but it is worth noting: Mark C. was watching the NBA playoffs the other day and lo and behold, guess which familiar logo appeared during a halftime sponsorship. Apparently the announcer even read off the name of the game during a tag. I don't think Mark is exactly right about it being one of the "first non-sports games being advertised in a sporting event" (I'm pretty sure I've seen one of those Killzone 2 or Call of Duty spots during my Cubs games lately), but it's the first time we've seen WoW promoted outside of the usual TV spots.
It's interesting to note, too, that it's being presented during the NBA playoffs as well -- I've seen more WoW twitterers tweet about the hockey playoffs lately than the basketball equivalent. Then again, Mark also says he saw it on the NBA TV subscription service, so maybe it was targeted at people who are willing to subscribe to a digital service. And just for the heck of it, we'll also point out that it was an LA (Blizzard is in Anaheim) vs. Houston (Blizzard also has an HQ in Austin) game, so maybe it was geographically targeted as well.
But this will probably not be the last time you see WoW in this context. Keep those eyes open.

I saw this on regular cable channel TNT during a VoA run. I got laughed at on Vent when I mentioned it randomly in the middle of the Emalon explanation...
Hooray A.D.D.!

"first non-sports games being advertised in a sporting event"
Not even remotely close. Both Nintendo and Sega in the 8 bit days advertised in major sports events. And it included non-sports games.

"...but it's the first time we've seen WoW promoted outside of the usual TV spots." Au contrare Dragon breath.
WoW was a sponsor of a NASCAR truck race a few weeks ago and not only that Ventrilo was the sponsor of one of the trucks.
We're everywhere!

I saw this weeks ago when the playoffs started on TNT. I mentioned it over vent during a guild raid and no one seemed to care. :P

I've seen WoW advertised like this plenty of times. Old news is old?
Iceveiled May 15th 2009 5:37PM
Is this really news worthy? I saw this last night during the lakers game and didn't think anything of it.
Newsflash! Products get advertised!

I know it's a stereotype, probably an incorrect one at that, but the thought of any 7ft budding basketball player squatting over a desk to slay some murlocs is probably two things I will never, ever see.
Vin Diesel on the hand...saw that coming! honest!

WoW advertises pretty heavily on the various WWE programs. I can't even begin to count the number of times I've heard Jim Ross say "Tonight's Friday Night Smackdown is brought to you by World of Warcraft" as of late.

As someone who has watched practically all of the NBA post season games (excluding the horrific Laker and Hawk games) I find it odd that Blizzard is advertising to sports fans. 9 times out of 10 if you post something about Basketball on WoW forums or in-game you'll get snide remarks on how sports suck. I yearn to meet other players who enjoy sports and sometimes I wish I was part of a guild that scheduled raids around them. Perhaps this will bring more sports fans into the game but I'm sure they'll still be hard to find. To me it just seems odd that Blizzard would target that demography to bring players in when there are so many players in WoW already that absolutely despise all non e-sport, sports.
