DreamHack to feature its own WoW realm
DreamHack, the world's biggest LAN party (according to Guinness), takes place in Sweden twice a year. They've just made an announcement of interest to us WoW players: at this year's summer event (June 13-16, assuming "Juni" means what I think it means), they'll have their own WoW realm. This is something that not many events have been able to do in the past. They'll be hosting an Arena tournament at the event, with prizes to be announced in the future.
We can expect the realm to feature premades and gear and enchant vendors, like previous tournament realms. They also mention "live showing of raids;" I'm not sure we've seen realms with premade PvE play before, so that should be interesting. More information on registration is going to be released "within the next few days;" we'll keep you posted. Is anyone thinking of competing at DreamHack? Has anyone gone before?
[thanks, Raful]

ok you need to be clear, for some of us dunces, this is on a private server right?
Christian May 16th 2009 5:08PM
It's probably more of a real server that Blizzard is allowing them to use exclusively.
Ohnoto May 17th 2009 9:32AM
This is more probably right.
Blizzard does have people go around and set up private servers for events where a blizzard rep is on location and when the event is over they take the equipment with them.
That is probably what will be happening here.

Sweden here, you stand corrected. Juni = June.
Over and out.
kozom May 16th 2009 5:20PM
Canada here, you stand corrected. He said June.
Over and out.
tuff_ghost May 16th 2009 6:58PM
He meant "you are correct", don't be a dick. Let's see you say it perfectly in Swedish.
kozom May 16th 2009 10:17PM
Sorry if it seems as though I was a dick, but the difference between "you stand corrected" and "you are correct" made it appear (to me) as though they were correcting them on something that needed no correction. It never really occured to me that their english might not be amazing, so sorry if I appeared as a prick.

You didn't appear to be a small protruding object of any kind to me. There is indeed a huge difference between those phrases and one shouldn't turn down advices in English from someone who seems to know the difference between 'there' and 'they're'. ;)

I was just being funny about "(June 13-16, assuming "Juni" means what I think it means)"
Jeez guys, lighten up. ._.

blizzard allowing dreamhack to do this is good marketing. there will be avid wow players there, and seeing the game in action at its endgame pvp and raiding mite sway the other gamers who haven't given it a try or convince older players to return.

we still don't have any official confirmation that this is not on a private server.
I'm waiting for something from blizzard confirming this or something else conclusive.
durrdurr May 16th 2009 6:16PM
Private server on major gaming party? That's very unlikely nobody is that stupid. MAJOR legal shitstorm.
AishaLove May 16th 2009 7:59PM
Private servers are legal if you own a payed account
Riley May 17th 2009 1:32AM
No, they're not legal at all, blizzard has said so
but this is in sweden, so there's no way they're going to be able to shut them down
MCRaider May 16th 2009 6:16PM
I doubt Blizzard really cares, in the bussniess world hacing your game in an event like Dreamhack is good advertising and so they will give the green light if its offical.
Even if it is a private server no one is going to care much. It is not hard to get the files and start up a stable server to play on.
Patrick B May 16th 2009 7:34PM
What? If they will not give the green light to a single person setting up a private server for personal use then why would they let this slip? They wouldn't.
MCRaider May 16th 2009 8:22PM
Because this event is the biggest LAN party in the world and it gives them free advertising if they want it to say "sure you can go ahead and do this".
The word is out though, so will Blizz fire up the legal department and have the military go over to Sweden and shut the servers down? No.
So either they do not care or have talked to people that run the even and said can be done since they are not using real characters just pre-mades.
The difference between this event and private servers in general is that the even is only 3-4 days long and servers can be up for months and months.
So having a dedicated server set up for people to play on for contests for 3 days is nothing for Blizz to get all up tight about.
Now if the servers where up for longer then yes it would be a problem but since its a special event with a ton of people I am sure Blizz will not mind.

The travelling RL Darkmoon Faire for the CCG had a server as well, they were doing PVP tourneys and they also did speed runs on the realm, I remember the lag that my team had, trying to run through the Mech.

What I'd love to see...Ghostcrawler and four of his cronies in the arena against the players.
You could sell seats.

Representatives from Blizzard has been attending Dreamhack the last 2 years (can be 3 years even) and its safe to assume they will this year aswell :) So this server is most likely legit and the PvE showcase is likely Ensidia (some of them are Swedes afaik)
